Man this sucks. I heard Ross Dellinger talk about what Mike went through this season. Seems he battled pneumonia throughout most of the season and seemed to be coming out of it when this health disaster struck him.

ML was so fun to listen to on his interviews and that was what will last a very long time in the memories of football fans, but his contributions to making the spread offense in college football what it is today shouldn't be overlooked.

Coach Leach's cameo on Friday Night Lights is an all timer.

Leach: Hey, do you know how to get to Lubbock?
Coach Taylor: You gotta take 61 up to 23.
Leach: Hey, Dillon East, right? You're the coach at Dillon East. You've lost your inner pirate. Uh, have you ever heard swing your sword? You're supposed to swing your sword like this, but you're swinging yours like this. You've got to find your inner pirate. A lot of times things just happen for a reason. We don't know why God wants it that way, but you can't make the best out of it until you get back your inner pirate. You might be the luckiest man alive and not even know it.

My favorite aspect of Mike Leach is that regardless of where he was stationed, he did things his way on his terms. He abhorred “coach speak” and he was authentic. There’s not enough of that in major college or professional athletics. Guys like Mike Leach or Gregg Popovich are few and far between…and now there’s one less in those ranks.

RIP to one of the last pirates out there sailing the seas. Jolly Roger is at half mast today. 🏴‍☠️

During his hiatus he would co-host a show w/ former PxP announcer Jack Arute on SiriusXM College Sports. He would broadcast from his place down in the Keys and take a dip in the ocean on commercial breaks. So great to listen to & where I really got to know more about the person. RIP

I can't recall the last time a sitting HC passed away like this. It has a really sad Randy Walker Northwestern vibe to it and Leach is far more visible nationally than Walker was. That was 2006. You have Leach's family in addition to the school, program and community at large mourning this. It's just really crappy and sad.

Mike Leach's coaching tree: Lincoln Riley, Dave Aranda, Sonny Cumbie, Dana Holgorsen, Seth Littrell, Art Briles, Ken Wilson, Neal Brown, Josh Heupel, Eric Morris, Sonny Dykes, Kliff Kingsbury, Ruffin McNeill and assistants Wes Welker, Bill Bedenbaugh, Robert Anae, Alex Grinch, Brandon Jones.

Great story is that he told Lincoln Riley at Texas Tech he wasn't much of a player but he would make a great coach.

His contribution the game has been as big as his personality. Maybe bigger. He didn't play college football and didn't start coaching at the Power Five level or even Division I at all. Hal Mumme and Mike Leach changed football and didn't use a playbook while doing so.

I read his book Swing Your Sword back in January of this year and followed that up with Perfect Pass by S.C. Gwynne. Two very good football reads if you have the time and don't want to dig into anything too heavy.

Very good hire. CU alum who probably could have been considered by them as well.

Walters is what the national media makes Doug Belk at UH out to be.

Copied ND hiring Freeman

Feel like Purdue put out a ton of smokescreen because didn’t see his name at all, thought it was gonna be the WKU HC. Purdue going defense is new too.

Feldman had him mentioned in a 12/7/22 article, FWIW. Which is nothing really.

Walters can coordinate a defense. Very key piece to Bielema getting Illinois turned around. Good recruiter too. Being at Mizzou and Illinois, he obviously had less of a platform than Freeman did at UC and ND. He definitely has that similar vibe to him and I think he's going to need a veteran DC so he can be a true HC CEO in that sense of the job. Tough loss for Bielema's staff.

I have to admit I'm surprised Jason Candle is staying at Toledo. There must be something up there. He should have moved on by now.

Rumor is that they're hiring JaMarcus Shephard (Washington Co-OC, former Purdue WR coach) as OC too.

My suspicion is we could have had Shephard last year as WR Coach but he probably wouldn’t commit to staying for multiple years. Stuckey was the better option in that he probably is on staff for 2 years minimum, probably even more.

Very true in all likelihood.

Shephard is much further along in his coaching career than Stuckey is. Would have been a great hire, but he turns 40 in 6 months and has been on the cusp of an OC hire for a few years now. This turned out to be the best move for everyone.

Was that something we asked of our new hires last year?
If so - while I’m sure MF wouldn’t block someone from like a major promotion - that would bode well for staff stability this year.

IIRC, this was also a factor in MF hiring Al Golden for the DC position…….wanted someone that would stay around for more than a year rental.

Walter's hire should take Purdue up another notch as long as he gets an experienced OC.

Most of Toledo's coaches have climbed the ladder to P5 jobs, at least in my lifetime - Saban, Pinkel, Campbell, someone else I'm missing.

Maybe he's done something worse than soliciting hooks during office hours.

He's a dick so that may be it. I know a couple guys that have coached there with him and the opinion is consistent.

I always assume there is something in the background that is the reason.

You were forgetting Tim Beckman, who went to Illinois and was a total imbecile.

Makes sense. He's a dick who keeps winning that nobody else wants and Toledo can't fire him without cause until he loses. Totally plausible.
