What’s up with Tommy Rees. Took the Browns TE Coach job but is being considered for the UCLA job? I haven’t seen much else on this.
Nothing left to see. UCLA hired Deshaun Foster.

Rees was reportedly being considered as a candidate due to the ties his dad and brother have to UCLA.

Tommy Rees, 31: An L.A. native, his deep ties to UCLA include father Bill working for 15 years under Terry Donahue and brother Danny playing for the Bruins. After serving as offensive coordinator for three seasons at Notre Dame and one at Alabama, Rees recently took a job as the Cleveland Browns’ tight ends coach and pass game specialist.

I think future carousels are going to cause us to have to forget everything we thought we once knew.

In this instance, he was a G5 HC making $800K a year or thereabouts, and now he's going to coach tight ends at an SEC school. Elliott was an assistant at SCAR from 2012-16. He coached over 80 games at GSU as head coach. Again, maybe he doesn't want the headaches of being a head coach right now?

It feels like this is a win for SCAR. They hired a guy with over 20 years of coaching experience, 7 of which were as a G5 head coach, to coach tight ends. He's overqualified.

This is a demotion for sure, but if he's making anywhere near the same salary for less responsibility, I'm sure the work/life balance is worth the pivot depending on the individual. Recruiting and NIL has to be insane right now. Even if a GA ST doesn't have the NIL dollars to bid for players, I'm sure his recruiting pool is being shrunk drastically as he competes with UGA, GT, and others in the deep south.

Sean Lewis a year ago. Then Kane Wommack. Now Elliott. G5 head coaches going for P4 assistant jobs.

It could be going to the NFL or being an assistant at a P4 program that is the way now. I would conceive that SCAR can afford to pay him around what he made at GSU, if not more, if they really wanted to.

I am not surprised. My daughter was super close to his niece in HS and our families spent some time together while he was at USC

Shawn loved coaching at USC his first go around.

His hometown is about 20 minutes from Columbia and his extended family is very important to him, they are still there.

He has been average as a head coach and isn't going to move up in the coaching ranks staying at GSU.

Take a step back - go home - restart your career. Seems about right.

I see folks in my industry jump ship for the greener grass and it’s rarely as sweet as it sounds. Regardless of your profession, culture & work/life balance can be immeasurable.

Being a G5 HC makes no sense at this point. Your two options are to stay irrelevant, or work your ass off to build winning program just so everyone else can cherry pick your best players with NIL. Smart move by him.

G5 HC jobs are still going to be a path to becoming a P4 HC and or coordinator/millionaire for those who want to get to that point.

I guess I see your point, though. You're still going to have certain guys that just want to run their own program and be a head coach. Others are going to bail on G5 HC jobs the first chance they get. The Elliott scenario seems to have circumstances that would suggest this is an unique exception. It ends up being a smart move for him. He's been at GSU for 7 years but his family was still back in South Carolina?

I am willing to guess that a lot of guys will think twice about leaving P4 assistant jobs to become G5 head coaches. In some cases, the pool is going to shrink which will open it up for guys that otherwise would not get the opportunity.

There is no telling what the overall mentality is going to be going forward, but we're certainly seeing things that we haven't seen before when it comes to the carousel. It's mid February and we're still turning out movement.

For a young up-and-comer, or someone who really wants to try his hand as a head coach, yes, G5 makes sense. I wouldn't be shocked if, say, DMC or Mickens went that route at some point, for instance.

But for someone who's coached at a higher level and is on the back half of their career, being a head coach - with all the extraneous hassle that involves - but going nowhere professionally sure might be less appealing than making almost as much money for considerably less bullshit as a P4 assistant. (Like, why is someone like Jim McElwain the head coach at Central Michigan, for instance.)

Who knows. On the flipside, with things as they are, McCullough and Mickens may not want to go G5 whatsoever.

I think the blue blooded programs are going to do whatever they can to retain elite talent. Money will not be an issue. The desire of said coach may ultimately determine how, when and where they move. Hafley decided NFL DC was for him. Elliott had domestic circumstances that prompted his move from GSU to SCAR. Chip Kelly went from P4 HC to P4 OC because....well, fuck if anyone knows. It's Chip Kelly.

It's going to be interesting and we're just getting started.

The Los Angeles Rams are hiring Iowa State offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, a source tells 247Sports' Matt Zenitz. The former Illinois star QB has worked at Iowa State since 2018.

Wow.

I guess we'll see how big of a draw a G5 head coaching job is, seems like a great fit

nce back in Tuscaloosa, as Saban began meeting with players, it became even more apparent to him that his message wasn't resonating like it once did.

"I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80 percent of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?" Saban recounted. "Our program here was always built on how much value can we create for your future and your personal development, academic success in graduating and developing an NFL career on the field.

"So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years."

Lol this fucking quote. He's basically saying that as soon as he wasn't able to hold power over his players futures he was fucked and he quit.

Precisely. He's no different from all the fans talking about how their precious little worlds are crumbling because college football is over with now that players can get money and move around whenever and wherever they want to like coaches do.

The schools and coaches getting all kinds of crazy money wasn't an issue for them, but now that players can cash in, everything is over and college football is done for.

Saban is the definition of the status quo demographic. Checks every damn box.

Yea I didnt take it that way at all. Players getting paid isnt the issue either. The transfer portal is the underlying issue and I think he is saying it without saying it. If players arent getting paid, theyre gone. If players arent playing, theyre gone. Saban, like many coaches isn't one to pander to his players and these changing priorities. He wants to coach ball, and win and not have to deal with all of the prima donna bull shit. Who wants to have to re-recruit their team endlessly every fucking season instead of coaching it. Anybody that thinks this is good for the sports overall, well my momma taught me if you dont have anything nice to say...

I think it can be the case that the portal system is out of control while also being true that the salesman Saban used it to his advantage without a second thought before NIL caused lesser programs to have some power to take players as well.

It really is a shame that GT failed to re-recruit Jahmyr Gibbs and UGA couldn’t hold onto Jermaine Burton, isn’t it Mr. Saban?

If everything is status quo, he's still going and trying to get back over Kirby at UGA. Full stop. He's 72 years old and has nothing left to prove. I don't blame him for getting out now, but don't start making this about morals and values of "molding young men." Bullshit. Every time Texas fired a coach, Nick Saban made damn sure he got another raise with more bonuses and incentives. Fair play to him. Fair play to his players too for getting what they can, too.
