Very good fit. His stock won't be any higher considering he was there four years and just went 10-5.

Baylor and Hawaii still open.

Overlooked move recently: Dino Babers hired McNeese St. HC Sterlin Gilbert as his OC at Syracuse. Gilbert was OC for Babers at Eastern Illinois (Jimmy G. at QB) and Bowling Green. Babers is looking to get things back on track.

I'd take Gilbert at ND to be OC no questions asked.

Huh. That wouldn't even be a lateral move.

IDK. Doesn’t Baylor pay extremely well? Texas recruiting. He’s inheriting a better team that just played for the conference title and went to an NY6 bowl.
Va Tech may be more prestigious but I’m not really sure it’s a better job right now.

Chipper has to land somewhere

Fuente has not been able to escape the Ghost of Christmas Beamer who lives in Blacksburg and still goes to work in the athletics ddepartment. I'm sure he's looking for a fresh start that isn't quite so suffocating. It's only getting worse with Bud Foster retiring but staying in the athletic department as an ambassador as well. His tenure has gone downhill fast and he's lost support of many fans despite the near constant deference to Frank Beamer.

Given his personality, Chip Long would not do well there as a my way or the highway type, but it's a HC job so who knows.

I think Chip is more likely to be an Offensive Analyst vs a Head Coach in 2020.

Who the heck would want a guy with an attitude like that as their HC??? Talk about a PR nightmare

Chip’s talented but I think it’d be hard to get a head coaching job when you just got fired for apparently no other reason than being a dick.

That might work both ways, though. Could ND not get traction with outside hires because they fired Chip Long?

Lea wouldn't be tempted to run off to VT would he?

When is the last time we were bummed that our QB or OC were leaving? I’d say Clausen for QB, not really sure about OC.

I was devastated when Charley Molnar left. Sat in darkness for 3 weeks straight. I mean, there is no replacing that perma tan and caterpillar brow.

Yeah. Was a pretty big blow to the offense. Always reminded me of an extra in Goodfellas.

Tom Loy reporting that John Lilly is a name to keep an eye on. His summary is as follows

John Lilly
Hometown: Beckley, West Virginia
Age: 51

1987-1991 Guilford College (QB/WR)
1991-94 Northwest Guilford High School (N.C.), assistant coach
1996-97 Florida State University, graduate assistant
1998-2007 Florida State University, recruiting coordinator/tight ends coach
2008-13 University of Georgia, tight ends coach
2014-15 University of Georgia, offensive special teams coordinator/tight ends coach
2016 Los Angeles Rams, tight ends coach
2018 University of Tennessee, assistant to the head coach
2019 Cleveland Browns, tight ends coach

As an FYI, In the 2013, 2014, and 2015 cycles John Lilly ranked as the #1, #3, and #1 Tight End coach recruiter in the 247 Recruiter rankings. Point is, he’s a phenomenal recruiter and would bring some big time recruiting talent to south bend.

In the more recent Recruiter rankings of Tight End coaches. Here are a couple of guys that maybe could be plucked from their positions...

Vince Marrow - I believe Kentucky made him the highest paid TE coach in the country so NO
Jeff Faris - Duke recruiting coordinator. Really good up and coming coach at 31yrs old
Cory Patterson - Illinois TE coach with Lovie Smith. Accountant turned football coach

I have a tough time seeing anyone other than John Lilly as the best recruiter and attainable. Curious to see where it goes but John Lilly is an exciting name to be floating around at ND for TE coach cause in my opinion that would be a grand slam hire and hopefully done before Cane Berrong gets to campus on February 1st to keep him in the class.

There are plenty of dicks in FB. Some school may feel they need a dick to get their program back on track.

Except ND doesn't have a history of doing this. A candidate may want to know some details of the firing, but I don't think it would factor into guys deciding not to interview.
