Also - knowing you need to buy is good! They want to sell today and not waste time on looky-loos. "We say X and Y on your website and we want to look at them before we decide on another car we saw at you-hated-rival-dealer across the street."

Run out of there and work them on the phone with a few other dealers. Don't fall for the two hour BS waiting game or "someone else wants it so we have to act now!" Plenty of cars out there and if you aren't too picky you can take your time to find one a dealer has a lot of room to work on.

Don't completely discount Craigslist either. With lots of factory warranty left it takes a lot of risk out of buying used, IMO. Saving a couple thousand bucks buying private would pay for a lot of repairs if you choose poorly.

Also, try to find out who the previous owner was and give them a call. Find out why they traded it in. If they just like to upgrade every 2-3 years cool. If they traded in because of repairs stay away.

My wife and are expecting our third kid early Fall. Anybody have any suggestions for a van or SUV that will fit 3 car seats?

I am gleefully past my minivan days, but drove a Honda Odyssey for years and it was an excellent vehicle. My wife now drives a Buick Encore and she absolutely loves it.

The Chevy Traverese has 2 different models, one with captain chairs, the other with a bench seat, both with a third row bench seat. We have two car seats in the captain chairs. The inside of the traverse is laid out like a minivan and you can get it in all wheel drive.

Car Buying Questions

Looking around today, I saw a certified pre-owned 2012 Toyota Rav4 for $18,000. 4WD LE. It has 30k miles. May have to check it out.

*I was under the impression only Toyota dealerships could sell certified pre-owned Toyotas, and likewise for other manufacturers. This must be dealer certified right, seeing it is at a Kia dealer?

We traded in a GMC Acadia, basically the GMC version of the Traverse, recently and loved it. It was AWD tho and the gas mileage wasn't the best. If you don't need the AWD I'd look into the Traverse, Acadia, or Enclave.

Many dealerships own multiple locations and sell several manufacturers. Possibly they own a Toyota dealership at different location.

.

This is very true the traverse does not have the best gas mileage at all.

This seems too good to be true. What gives here? KBB has it valued at $23 k. Take a look and see what I'm missing, the Carfax is clean BTW:

Indianapolis, IN 2012 Toyota RAV4 4DR 4WD LE Certified SUV Carmel, IN Westfield, IN Butler Toyota-Scion | 29621A | 2T3BF4DV0CW191908

Here's the KBB:

Kelley Blue Book

*They also have a handful of other same year Rav4's with comparable mileage for $18-20 k

Seems like you are missing a great deal. :) Do they have pictures of the interior and at all angles? Maybe flood damage? I don't know. I see why you think something is up, but it is probably worth looking at.

Pictures looked good IMO, in and out. Carfax says no flood damage. The only thing "missing" is pics under the hood. I'm assuming it's legit though because it is certifed by Toyota.

That Rav4 looks like a very good deal. My brother owns one and loves it. I bought my wife a 2012 Honda CR-V and she said she is driving it until the wheels fall off. My CR-V is nicer than the Rav4 and slightly bigger. Rav4's interior looks a little plasticy (I know it's not a word) but can't go wrong with either. If you were buying new, I could give you great advice as I bought my last three cars new over the phone. It was awesome/hilarious Good Luck

Also someone mentioned it, but buying used from an individual is a much better option than used from a dealer. Get your own financing and hit auto trader.

Bah. I read the fine print. The Rav4 is priced at $17k just on Saturday, and goes back to $20k after. Typical power play move to sell it this weekend (which I'm sure they will). I'm not ready to commit just yet, seeing as we haven't even went to a dealer, and there's no way I'm buying the first one we like, even if it is a good deal.

Car Buying Questions

Haven't driven anything yet (obviously), but I'm narrowing it down to the Rogue or Rav4. Those two seem to be the best for the price range, from my extensive day of researching all possible prices and reading reviews. I was really pulling for the Escape because I love Ford, but it just doesn't seem to stack up to those other two.

have heard good things about the ford, bad about the jeep. I have 2 wranglers 97 and 12, and have been blessed with good luck, but specifically the models you mentioned, as well as the Cherokee, have got some bad press from friends and employees of mine.

Honest question, is it better to buy a car made by an American company but built overseas or a foreign car built in America? I prefer a foreign car built in America.

Good question. Sounds like Toyota to me. Isn't the Tacoma and/ or Tundra made in Texas?

In the market to buy a new auto, and looking at SUVS. I haven't bought one since 2001, so clearly have no idea what the market looks like now. After doing some price comparing/reading reviews, the ones in our price range ($12-20k, wifey wants to spend 20, I want to spend much less) are:

*This would be for a 30k or less miles 2012-2014 model. I'm a "drive it until you kill it" person, so resale values aren't important, but obviously maintenance prices and durability are.

Ford Escape
Kia Sportage
Toyota Rav4
Chevy Captiva
Nissan Rogue
Jeep Patriot or Liberty

Some questions:
Anyone have experience with one of these models?

Any motor heads have a preference on the good/bad in that list?

Is the Kia warranty (10 yr 100k power and drive train for certified used) the worthless scam it sounds like?

Is a 2.4 4 cyl enough for an SUV? (Seems small to me. I'm used to trucks, and these "crossovers" base models all seem to be 4 bangers)

At a dealership, what are some important Do's and Dont's? (car salesmen terrify me, and I'm scared to take a woman with a large baby bump with me, because they will see that and know we need to buy)

Any help would be appreciated. Looking to buy soon, and wanted a battle plan before stepping foot on a lot. I understand all of this information is a few clicks away, but would appreciate the unbiased commentary here. I feel like most car related sites are filled with dealers/others with an agenda.

Ford Escape: newer models are solid, and MPG is very good. awesome in the snow. I have a 2012 and it's a beast.
Kia Sportage: Junk. Stay away.
Toyota Rav4: Pricy, but may be worth it.
Chevy Captiva: Meh...check out reviews on Edmunds
Nissan Rogue: Small but reliable and gets good reviews. Like the Rav, more of a chick car if you ask me.
Jeep Patriot or Liberty
: you'd have to pay me to drive one

If I had a lot more money and didn't care about MPG, the new Ford Explorers are sexy, as are the new Chevy Colorados.

Tell you what I did last fall.

I had a 2004 Subaru Forrester and a Honda Odyssey.

The Honda was the vacation vehicle. The Subaru was for serious.

I wanted to simplify and modernize.

I listed what I wanted in order of importance; 7 seats; AWD; and, a beefy engine. Then I wanted the lowest price in that I could find.

I could have purchased anything on the market I wanted. A cash purchase was my goal. I looked new, used, gently used, rebuilt, etc.

As I was just about to pick up the keys of an Acadia, I happened to see a Dodge Journey. A model year back. 20-something k mileage. I researched Journeys. I looked at this one. It was one of the least fancy models, but it had the 3.6 liter 6, and all wheel drive. Didn't have all the fancy hoo-ha's. Got it for exactly half the price of the Acadia!

Saw everything negative they said about the Journey. With the 6 cylinder, five speed automatic, acceleration wasn't an issue, at all. Found it to be one of the most comfortable and practical vehicles I have ever owned. So far.

I got a Mazda CX-5 exactly one year ago and absolutely love it. The CX-5 has only been out for 3 or 4 years so may be hard to find a used one. I would def look into the Mazda, it's awesome car.

The last Jeep I had, the Patriot, was a piece of crap. I currently have a 2014 Subaru Forester and love it.

My 2012 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited rides very well. 2012 was the first with new engine, and redesign. So far it's been rock solid. A lot more power than it's predecessors, and better gas mileage. I traded in my X5 and have no regrets thus far. Has all the same features as the X5 almost. Certainly the drive is different, but overall good power, comfortable, corners better than any other wrangler or truck I've owned. The Rubicon models ride much rougher with the heavy duty suspension and larger front axle. The Liberty model, and really other smaller models have a bad rep thought. The Wrangler's resale remains one of the best.

Sorry I didn't see this yesterday my fellow Region Rat.

I've been in the used car industry my entire working career. Since you are a drive it till it dies guy, here it goes:

Ford Escape: Solid choice for what you are looking for. The last redesign is heads and shoulders above past models but who knows how the new platform will age. At least repairs will be cheap. I'd pass

Kia Sportage: This and the Hyundai Tucson are ok but there is no data to how they will perform long term as the Koreans have been getting better at a rapid pace. I wouldn't buy it in your position.

Toyota Rav4: The king of the drive it till it dies crowd. This would be my #1 choice.

Chevy Captiva: Forget you typed this. The Captiva is a rental only model. Regardless of how well it is made, there have been countless people driving each model who didn't care about the vehicle.

Nissan Rogue: Unless Nissan has replaced their CRAP CVT tranny, stay away from it or any Nissan product that has a CVT. They ALL go out and then you will send the guy at Aamco's kid to ND for a semester.

Jeep Patriot or Liberty: The supplier who makes the Nissan CVT apparently makes the entire Jeep Liberty. Everything breaks and it gets horrible fuel economy.

Additional vehicles...

Honda CRV: Finishes second to the RAV4 in the Drive it till it dies category.

Subaru Forrester: #3 on the drive it till it dies list. If you can find one used, always good to look at them. Low volume sales make it much more dificult to find vs the Rav and CRV.

Chevy Equinox: Surprisingly a good buy as long as you know the history. There are a lot of rental and fleet cars out there. Rates about the same as an Escape.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport: Mitsu 4 cyl engines are very good. Edmunds and the ratings services hate them, Buy Here, Pay Here dealers love them. They run forever even if the interiors aren't up to the others in terms of refinement.

Mazda CX-5: The last model is the best looking model in this segment IMO. Mazda is an enigma in the used car industry. Everybody loves them, nobody buys them, some say they last forever, I've experienced the opposite. If I were leasing one for 2-3 years I'd do it. drive it till it's dead? No.

Of the group, for your intended purpose I'd recommend the Rav4 first, the Subaru second and the CRV third and skip the rest.

I've read some interesting studies for the Buy Here Pay Here industry (Drive Time and JD Byrider type dealers) That will carry over for your situation. Rav4's are well engineered and have owners that follow the rules of service so you get a quality used car. Subaru's are well engineered, not on the same level as Toyota but their owners are generally more involved with their vehicle, an emotional tie that lends them to treat the vehicle better, not like an appliance. Honda owners buy Hondas because they feel they are over engineered and therefore do not have to keep up with standard maintenance like they would other makes. You still get a quality used car.

It's no mistake that these are the 3 most expensive cars in this segment.

Oh... one last thing. Don't get too excited thinking you will find a 1-3 year old car on CL. People who are trying to sell cars that age on CL are doing so because they are upside down and didn't like the sound of the trade in estimate they received from the used car mgr at a dealership. CL or Autotrader are the ONLY place to buy vehicles that are 5 years + and older from private parties.

Lastly, depending on what value you place on the peace of mind buying from a certified program delivers, the extra $ you will lay for a certified vehicle may be worth it. Toyota and Honda have excellent programs.

It's a toss up between Ford and GM. I personally trust GM small block V8's long term. I'd bu the last gen GMC Sierra but F-150's can't be argued with. the 3.5 Eco Boost turbo V6's are awesome engines BUT they haven't been on the street long enough to have built up any long term rep like the small block V8's from GM.

I like the Ram products too. They win a lot of awards but long term they don't have the same rep as GM or Ford. The Diesel 1500 Ram is by FAR the most economical truck on the market but you'll pay a premium up front for the honor of saving money with each fill up.

Tundra's are good trucks, over priced and don't perform as well as the domestics dollar for dollar. Still, it's a Toyota and has good heritage. I'd pass though.

Nissan is coming out with a new Titan. Stay away from the old one's.

Thanks NDC. I've been a Ford guy most of life, but have been entertaining a change to GM. Trying to figure out next steps for late this year or early next. Toss up right now between leasing an Jag F-Type or buying a new or newer truck. I know, huge difference.. lol. I don't really need anything right now but after I get done on a restoral this year, I know I'll likely pull the trigger on something.

I really like what I'm hearing about the 2017 Raptor, so may wait till fall next year. Mean looking truck, just think I'll want a quad cab. Any words of advise on the Raptor series? Rumor has it that the 2017 will have an Eco Boost and get mid 20s gas mileage.

Word. I'm leasing as 2014 Mazda CX-5 for 3 years and so far absolutely love the car. So I guess I really don't know how long it will last. But if others were to lease I would highly recommend the CX-5
