yeah, I don't get the denbrock hate. this remains an offense that has produced at levels we could never have dreamed of during basically the entire 2010s and early 2020s, and while it didn't look great on Saturday things look a lot different if we simply execute to the level we've been executing at all year. They were playing a lot of man, we threw up a lot of balls to bigger players in single coverage, and those players didn't catch those balls at the rate you would expect.
I am less upset with the boundary fades and more upset with the playcalls coming out of half and following the Sanders INT—especially the latter. That series was a disasterclass.

That's an NFL stat though. In college, in theory, your hit rate should be higher if you can get favorable mismatches, which, in theory, we should be able to do against BYU.
My Grok AI says College football is 35/65. I’m curious what are actual rate was for BYU.

Those tight end fades were open. Carr missed the throws. The calls were right as far as I'm concerned.

Denbrock can be frustrating and he's certainly open to improvement and be criticized, but it's kind of a thankless job in sports. Everyone hated Parker. Tommy Rees....I'm not relitigating that. Chip Long, Mike Sanford, Chuck Martin, we could go as far back as you want depending on our age. There are some people who are just always going to have beef with play calling. Some of that is warranted. At the end of the day, however, you have a lot of talent out on the field that needs to execute the plays that are called.

CJ Carr is supposed to be a Heisman contender and NFL first round draft pick. He did not look like either of those Saturday night, yet he still managed to make some plays and ND had a shot to win the game at the end. At some point, however, he's going to have to make some of these throws and execute the plays that are called.

This is true of defense and special teams as well. Scheme and coaching are part of it yes. Players making plays is also part of it.

Did anything come out about Walton? Did he tweak something? He looked like a freaking bull on his limited carries, and BYU wanted absolutely none of that smoke. Neither did Denbrock, apparently.

I get Denbrock’s concern, though. A mere 300 yards in 2 games? Averaging 13.9 and 5.2 yards a carry? Fucking alarming. Keep handing him the ball and you risk first downs, sustained drives, touchdowns...all sorts of shit that could interfere with whatever offensive masterpiece we’re apparently saving.

Credit to Denbrock for recognizing the real problem and shutting it down. Why make BYU figure out how to stop a fresh Walton in the 4th quarter when you can simply stop giving him the ball?

This is kind of where I'm at. I'd need to watch a lot of film and know a lot more about what was actually called vs what was checked into to have a meaningful opinion on Denbrock's performance. But I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that (a) this offense has been putting up tons of points with him (yes, frequently against inferior competition, but I've been a fan long enough to remember when we weren't doing that) and (b) this offense had plenty of opportunities to put up more points last night.

Is Brooks having all 22 access just a matter of paying for it or how does that work?

No deep shots basically all game. But with refs letting their cb’s hold like they are reffing a narduzzi game I knew it’d be hard for a guy to get free over the top.

TBH, I’m not even sure we have a burner at wr that could make a deep, deep shot happen against a top 10 team
Burress and Graham are faster and better athletes than our 3 starting WRs. Obviously frazier as well but I'll give that a pass as he's a true frosh (not a good excuse). That's not me saying Burress and Graham are better, I don't think that. But man, it would really open up the offense if you rotated more and had more players running deep downfield taking a corner/safety with them. They don't run many deep routes at all because they don't want to pull their WRs off the field and running them on a lot of deep passes would gas them faster.

The biggest issue i have with denbrock is he's not doing things to make it easy on the offense, it has to be complete 1-1 wins to make plays. I'd have graham, frazier, burress rotating in running a lot of deeper routes to open more things up mid level for faison, greathouse, and gilbert. Also, frichan use PA. No play action when everyone knows we want to run. Denbrock makes life so easy for opposing LBs, and makes the reads harder on carr. It's so much harder on lbs if they are moving towards LOS then have to fire back into the passing lanes, vs firing back right away when it's obvious it's a passing play. Did we even do an RPO once to key off their aggressive lBs?

Is that a Denbrock issue or a Seider issue? Isn't he in charge of the RB rotation?

Regardless, I agree. Walton should have seen way more carries. I am done with Williams running the ball. He doesn't seem to make anyone miss and goes down on first contact. Save him for the wheel routes if you want to get him the ball.

So much to lint to that has been mentioned. If three small WRs are gassed what do you think 5 325 pound corn feds will be?! We rotate the DTs but what about the OLine? Yeah yeah chemistry and all that but being gassed throws chemistry out the window. Offensively this was a game of Dumb & Dumber. Carr was outsmarting himself all game and was greedy not taking short pass gains. We bitch about a Denbrock not having his duel threat QB but Carr is quick albeit not thick but how often does the RB get stuffed in the read option where have Carr tuck it and run would be huge yards?! Would also give the D something to think about. Why run him up the middle instead of this?! Carr needs to quit thinking he’s Peyton and get up there and snap as is. He’s being given too much credit for getting us in the right play when up till now we have just had bigger faster superior talent. Reel him back in and get some tempo/momentum going. I think we will be shaking our heads in the next two years when we find out how much better Burress and Fitzgerald are and should have been using them a lot more sooner. Deference to Greathouse has been overdone. Unless something was wrong with Walton he should have played more snaps than James. James had one really good run and a few other 5-7 yarders but the couple of short runs by Walton were more powerful and he always falls forward. Guys don’t want to tackle him head on. Not rotating other WRs at elevation just shows the stupidity of the coaching staff. So many questions should be asked of the staff that’s re tough questions but I think the only honest answer will be that they had collective brain farts in the money and F’d up. Own it and admit you got outcoached while holding vastly superior talent. How many guys on BYU are getting drafter the next two years?

Btw I have now read this entire thread!

After listening to power hour...neither of our coordinators seem to be grasping things that are obvious to everyone else. I just don't get it, but either way it's not good enough.

Some things that the Irish need to be concerned about and most have already been mentioned. But don’t forget, the season and the goal hasn’t disappeared never to be seen again. Spend the off week reflecting on what didn’t happen and plan to correct those issues moving forward. It’s not the time to be negative or throwing in the towel. Learn and keep moving forward Irish. I think you’re going to be just fine.

Not all were open, but let's say they were. Why keep calling the same play when the QB is struggling to make the connection?

haven’t watch yet:

Bottom line. You can't play shuler right now, this isn't injury related, this is mental. If it was just missed tackles that would be one thing. He has no clue what he's doing in coverage.

LBs are terrible in zone coverage

The majority of plays we gave up in the passing game were either due to shuler, lbs, no pass rush or just the team not knowing what call they were in, who they had, and what their responsibility was. There were some absolute great throws by Bear as well, he does need to get some credit.

Coaching first and foremost, but then some players you just can't play right now. Shuler and Ausberry need their roles significantly reduced by Miami. I'd rather see O'brien in over Shuler, and if we get Tae back, IMO, shuler should be 4th safety.

On passing downs we need to have only 1 LB in, and play 3 safeties if they are in 12 personnel, 11 or 10 personnel we need 3 safeties and 3 dbs.

Thats how I felt about this whole game...frustrating. I wanted to punch the coaches...

I rewatched the game, and it was frustrating how we performed. there were 2 positives: RBs and Special Teams.

I do want to place more blame on the OL. They had a hard time dominating the OL and to me they were getting pushed back quite often and collapsing the pocket, putting pressure on Carr. There were often times where they let DL/LB through which was terrible...i didnt think OL player well at all...and the low snaps were awful all game.

Carr was off all game...worst game I have seen from him.

They spent WAYYY too much time game planning for Bear...it was ridiculous as his runs were nothing earth-shattering...we effectively stopped their running game, but we saw the effects as they did whatever they wanted on our LB/DB.

I dont understand the need for a TE to be in on every play...so predictable passing offense and then the running tell...

Where the hell is the Playaction? Especially with decent RBs...criminal.

Denbrock...F-....horrendous playcalling and everyone making excuses about him saving plays for big games...truth be told, very vanilla plays...

No WR rotation...ridiculous!

No pressure on the QB...it was ridiculous looking at that, and then seeing Carr under pressure most of the game.

Talich played outstanding and the defense improved once they went to man...hearing Ash saying that they should only make adjustments at halftime...idiot...

Im not going to blame the referrees too much...but i know they were holding our players many, many times...

I was angry but then realized they were flat and looked unready. I am concerned...thankfully we have a bye so they can fix these things.

Biggest issue for me is the coaching, and the lack of Alphas as captains...there was a lack of fire from our team.
Yes, that's one point, I forgot to mention... Where is our Pat Coogan? Damn it!

There were a few plays it appeared Moore and other DBs weren’t trusting Shuler in coverage and got out of position too. It’s hard to cover when you’re on the ground and 8 was all over the place.

Can’t high point balls that sail over your head
I still say that there were 4-5 passes, although in tight coverage, hands flying around, that still hit the receivers hands and were not caught.

Our receivers need to catch some of those passes.

Yeah I mean you can't tell me O'Brien is gonna be worse than Shuler. I'd rather have Joey's length out there. BYU LB's tipped who knows how many balls. If Tae comes back, Give me Mckinney, Moore, Tae at Nickle, Joey, and Talich. Or let Talich play some LB if he can cover better than our current LB's

It is a head coaching issue. He needs to overrule his assistants in situations like this.
