What is really interesting about the observation made by these two former players is that the last year that Bob coached at ND, which I believe was 2001, I don't think that either of these two guys were even in high school.

A fair point. And the Weis-era teams they did play on were not renowned for defense.
Still I'd take Davie over BVG as defensive coordinator in a heartbeat right now.

Was never a huge Brian Smith fan, but they make a good point here. BVG's defense is just too complicated. Guys have to make too many decisions and they're tentative. And too often our best athletes can't get on the field because they haven't learned all the intricacies yet, so we go with Schmidt instead of Morgan, or Martini instead of Coney, and they get out-athleted.
I remember the Alabama center saying how simple Diaco's defense was. And that could be an Achille's Heel if you're playing Alabama. But it worked well most of the time. Back to something like that maybe.

I think Alabama is different because they are a semi-pro team in terms of talent. Diaco did a good job with that defense but they didn't have much of a chance in that game, unfortunately.

Yea but Brian Smith was a ND freshman in 2007 and Toryan Smith was a freshman in 2006. Bob coached between 1997-2001. How did they know how Bob coached the defense?

Because they are football players who played in the same program, which means they a) probably watched a bunch of that tape, b) may have used some of the same schemes at times, and c) have connections to those players and coaches. For those on the inside, I don't think it is that hard to find out what previous coaches and players did.

You're assuming that they actually said it, and wyvrn isn't just making it up. I'm not as certain as you....

Oh I agree. I always thought that Bob coached defense well and could recruit some good defensive players. Unfortunately not on the other side of the ball, especially QB's. He thought he had Leak's brother who changed his mind at the very end and went to WF. Turned out to be a bad decision for both parties.

On the Irish Illustrated podcast, the writers talked about matchups. They felt like the defensive lineman played poorly (outside of Rochelle) and seemed to be giving up on plays if they lost the point of attack. Texas had a track star that abused the secondary. Martini was not the right guy against the scheme Texas ran - it did not play to his strengths. They downplayed the schematic issues but acknowledged if the problems continue, BVG could be in trouble at year end.

Bright spots were Morgan (whom they said was the most physical defender on the field), Crawford, and Rochelle.

Feel free to download the podcast and listen to it. It was the one right after the game (I think they do 3 per week, not sure). I think it was the 9/08 cast but it could be the 9/09 one.

If you want to argue the point, I suggest using facts. If you make it personal, I'll just ignore you and eventually others will as well.

Cheers!

It's going to be funny when the defense plays really well against MSU and people get conned into having hope again.

Defense only allowed 99 yards through 3 quarters. It's coming. Will we buy the mirage?

Maybe they get it? I reserve pure judgement till halfway through, even though I've been guilty of jumping the fire bvg bandwagon

At a wedding. How's BVG looking?

Not as tan as usual. Bulbs in his tanning bed must be getting replaced. When he loses his job in ND he won't be working in football again. Maybe Charlie W will add him and his complex D rot his offense and his schematic advantage....

I have to agree any enthusiasm about today is tempered by who we were playing against

Held the vaunted Wolfpack to just 10 points!! This is the Nevada Wolfpack were talking about here, the one coached by star Weis pupil Brian Polian! The fighting Kaepernicks!! Safe to say I think VanGorder crushed all doubts and assured himself as the heir-apparent to Brian Kelly!!

Not sure if you're joking since no italics but they needed overtime to beat Cal Poly last week and only put up 24 in regulation.
