41.6 points per game give up from the North Carolina game until USC! I forget when Schmidt went down. They love to knock his speed, but it's been absolutely painful to watch without him.

There needs to be a lot of looking at the staff... I don't give a fvk if you have so many injuries that your second all dorm team is playing defense... What happened on D since FSU is inexcusable... Completely...

What was completely maddening was how many times this d had people in 3rd and long and just couldn't get off the field in the last three games. There were some great flashes only to be followed by huge plays. I'm not buying into the apocalypse is upon ND narrative though. Anyhow, what would any of you have done differently? What does this catch all "simplify the scheme" that people keep throwing around mean? I would have liked to have seen more zone and soft coverage to limit big plays towards the end of the season. Also, in some of the alignments everyone was crowded at the LOS with only the Freshman MLB holding down the middle, which meant that if the runner made it past that it was see yaa.

The defense the first 5 games was pretty good. Hell, 31-0 against UM!? Since then, atrocious. They can't take all the blame due to so many turnovers. The really sobering thing however, is the seeming lack of emotion. Have some of the players given up? Has it been because of the Universities handling of the "frozen 5", who are their friends and teammates?

If those dummies were my teamates I would be pissed at their dumb asses for compromising all the hard work I had done to prepare only to have them play a part in pulling the rug out from underneath the team. Same with Golson for being a turnover machine.

BVG needs to sit down and analyze the North Carolina game. They exposed our defense with their hurry up offense. BVG is in a tough situation with how young we are, the injuries our defense has sustained, and our offense not being able to carry the load.

Next year our defense should be top 25 or better with everyone (except Riggs) coming back next year. If we have the same results 1 year from now, ND needs to consider making a change.

We know jack about football compared to any college coaching staff. But damn, right now BVG is like Tenuta 2.0.

Not really. That's where the injuries become an issue. As far as I can recall Tenuta didn't have to deal with this level of attrition (thank the lord lol).

I agree completely. I think he relied too much on situational personell packages, which the hurry up cancelled out.

Thanks Bluto. I was at that game (I am a season ticket holder) and ND had a tough time subbing guys in. My dad and I talked to a couple of North Carolina fans and they said how NC gets off to a slow start, well not that game. The NC game shouldn't have been a shootout. While some may think we lost steam at the FSU game I disagree, I think out downfall was the NC game. ND played a heck of a game vs. FSU.

Not denying that. Was just pointing out how it came around full circle. Started because he was awesome for having the balls to blitz at that time, to wondering why we blitz

I'm happy you pointed that out. While the public sees how bad this defense is.

Bend but don't break. Or BEND OVER and let them break you? Seriously, especially with Sheldon Day out, we don't have a Tuitt and Nix to rely on. Or a Teo for that matter.

Honest question, does anyone think defensively we would have been in a better position with Diaco still here? Keeping the injuries and suspensions.

I was at that game too. Must admit it was exciting. Golson....man he did not do the d any favors in that one, or against ASU, or USC. Frankly I'm much more concerned with how Golson, the O line and the field goal unit went into the tank when the stakes were high. The d I understand but those dudes...they were supposed to "carry the team" from the get go.

Yes, I agree the NC game was exciting. With knowing how young our defense is I expected us to make mistakes, but not as many mistakes they made all year. The defense is a work in progress and I see them getting better. Concerning our offense I didn't expect them to be as bad as they were because of the talent we have. I never expected a 2-3 North Carolina team, also a 17 pt. underdog I believe to come to South Bend and give us a game...but then again everyone plays ND tough.

Not really. Diaco's defense wasn't that great last year either with the injuries. There's also the fact that Diaco did a piss poor job recruiting the two most important cogs in a 3-4: NT and MLB. We would have been even worse at those positions this year if the injuries started mounting like they have been. I can't even imagine who is healthy at DT for us right now that would make a good NT.

We've got to beat this defensive injury bug next year, shoot for no suspensions, and we'll be in good shape.

If we have the same results from 1 year from now, there's no consideration. BVG would be immediately fired, as would most likely Kelly. Sorry, this year would be excusable due to the injuries, but if we have back-to-back years of record-breaking futility on the defense, then there's really no option than to clean house.

That being said, I honestly think Longo will be fired this year. I have honestly never seen this kind of outbreak of injuries in my life, and this has been a continuing problem. I'm sure he's a cool guy and a decent trainer, but the fact remains that he is not keeping these guys from getting hurt. That's the main priority of a strength and conditioning coach, is to keep these guys conditioned through the season.
