I remember when I was a kid at the original Rockne stadium. Lou was a rock star. He walked out of the stadium and was surrounded by a swarm of fans. I got pretty close. It was like seeing Yoda in person. Kelly never had that aura.

I find it hard to believe Brian Kelly does not respect and admire Lou Holtz
There are very few people on this earth who understand what it what it takes to succeed as head coach at Notre Dame. Lou and BK are two of them. They might not be pen pals - and of course he should have written back - but I really doubt BK does not respect Lou.

Atta boy Lou! Take a shot an ND’s schedule.

True, but I think Toledo and Marshall would both beat the cupcakes on LSU schedule the last couple years. Southern U, UAB, New Mexico, Mcnees, ULM. But anyway you slice it the SEC is going to be tougher week in and week out.

They have very polar opposite political views from what I have heard
I find that hard to believe given the amount of money Krian Belly makes/pays in, regardless of true feelings or beliefs. Until you’re Elon Musk, money matters!

Saying all the right things, bringing back pre-game mass.

Lou used to say "It's not my job to motivate players. They bring extraordinary motivation to our program. it's my job not to de-motivate them."

[EDIT] Sorry, put this here because of the Lou discussion earlier. Probably belongs in the Freeman thread.

IMO Kelly never really got ND the way Lou or Ara (didn't take him long to figure it out) did. This was a job and nothing more to Kelly. I've always felt that way. He did a massive amount of good for the program, but if he really had the passion of the others, you would see it in is demeanor and his recruiting.

Very cool. I'm sure I've told the story before, but my grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles all flew out to Hawaii for the '91 game. My uncles ran into Lou at the hotel and asked if he'd meet with my grandfather. Gramps wasn't even a donor at the time, just a big fan with some alumni offspring, he got all our tickets through another source. Lou said he would make time, told them to meet him in a conference room at a certain time. My uncles surprised Gramps, he had no idea he was going to meet Holtz. They got to talk for some time, Lou put him in touch with his rep at the university. He also shared that ND had just offered him a new 5 year contract, which was rare for them back then and the news wouldn't break for another week. Gramps ended up donating a lot of money after that meeting and eventually it led to season tickets in the gold seats. That meeting had a profound effect on my grandpa though, couldn't say enough nice things about Lou. He's still got the picture framed in his office where he's meeting and shaking hands with him. I'm sure Lou had better things to do than talk with a random fan prior to that Hawaii game, but Gramps has never forgotten it.
Dammit, ulukinatme, last time you told one of your stories we scheduled a fight night at the Irsay YMCA. Cut this shit out.

I think its pretty clear that BK has been more careful with his Assistant hires at LSU thus far. He has a strong staff and a staff that can get it done in recruiting Louisianna.

History has shown that when the head football coach at Notre Dame throws his heart and soul into the job, there are tremendous results but it also takes a significant toll. Look at Leahy, Ara and Lou. They understood and embraced the importance of the role, and at great personal sacrifice made Notre Dame great. They left the job physically and emotionally drained but they were incredibly successful and became legends.

The tell for Rasputin that Kelly didn't embrace it is that he spent 12 years in what is a physical and emotional meat grinder for the fully committed, but good ole Bri' just strutted off to LSU like Foghorn Leghorn without any scars. His tank wasn't empty. He had more to give. For that he will forever be Brian Kelly the Good, but not a legend. He was never all in.

Rasputin knocks it out of the park again. Successful ND coaches have ended up having to retire early for health reasons, or they passed away. Lou got forced out. The position has never been a stepping stone to something greater.

Exactly. It’s a job at LSU too, minus the bump and grind on recruits, which we know is for pleasure.

I don't think Kelly gave his heart and soul to ND, but he did win games, brought the program back to respectability, and his foundation raised a ton of money. He did make a lot of mistakes and it's unfortunate he left the way he did, but it's not like he left a smoking crater behind. However, it's kind of understandable all the "hate" because he never comes across as genuine. Which may or may not be the truth.

Would be fun to come up with Pythonesque titles for everyone on staff:

Frankly I am sick of hearing from Phil. The kid should have stayed and he would have started last year.

There is an interesting thesis/documentary/study/message board post to be explored here.

BK was exactly what ND needed post-Weis. It needed someone who could harden himself to outside influence, distraction, and pressure, and treat the foundational rebuild as 'strictly business.'

But hardening himself to EVERYTHING, the ND mystique included, also put a firm limit on how high he could elevate the program (outside of getting lucky at QB, of course... which he never really did).

If you want to break through the ceiling at ND, you need to embrace all of the things that come with it, and use it as motivation whenever/wherever possible. It will drain you, and run you into the ground, and maybe even burn you out... but it's necessary for ND's identity. BK was unique in avoiding/distancing/ignoring those things, and getting through as long as he did. But it was a 12-year study on how close you can get without reaching the mountain top.

Freeman will full embrace ND and use it to his advantage, and has already proven that, imo... the question is if he has the coaching chops, and staff-building skills, to deliver before he burns out.

Dang, on the Shamrock today it was said that BK told anyone on staff that if they talked to Pete that they would be fired after his Tyson Ford story came out last offseason.
