Well, to be fair, there was plenty not to like while he was here, I think the success he had simply overshadowed it for a lot of fans.

Well how in the hell would I know? Im not about to hang out there and run the chance of getting dry humped by the man.

And yes, I thought they were taken on different days.....

No surprise here...

"I wrote Brian Kelly maybe 8 positive letters during his time at Notre Dame, and I go to the mailbox everyday hoping I'm going to find an answer. He never responded to one of them" - Lou Holtz

I wrote Coach about my Mom's fandom for Notre Dame when she turned 90 and was getting weak. Told him how she and Dad got married at the Log Chapel. He responded with a wonderful letter and a signed Notre Dame football poster. Extremely joyful and kind. Lou Holtz did the same thing, by the way.

Yea I saw that over the weekend. Not a good look for Brian Kelly. He just is not a likable fellow.

... and true as true. Wish I still had all those nice things from Mom's last years, but I gave them to my sister for the family history vault. I'd post this for you guys as I'm sure the haters will want to hate so badly that they'll trash it as "fake news." Coach by the way offered to meet Mom if she could ever make it to South Bend again, but I think he knew that she was too weak for that. Still, it made her happy. She had met Lou earlier in her life when one of my brothers received an Ohio Valley Coach of the Year award, and Lou insisted that she come up on stage for a hug.

These guys are rarely unfeeling monsters. Fans sometimes are, but Notre Dame coaches, no.

I always had a feeling Kelly was dismissive of Holtz's history and knowledge. Aside from the occasional pep rally I didn't see Lou interacting with Brian's teams much. I'm finding it harder and harder to like the guy anymore. Egomaniac feels like a fitting word.

I always had a feeling that Kelly was a complete asshole. Everything coming out about him in hindsight vindicates my instincts.

"When we got here, we were really riding on the backs of coach (Ara) Parseghian and coach (Lou) Holtz and what they had established,” Brian Kelly said Monday at the Kelly Cares Golf Invitational fundraiser at Lost Dunes Golf Club.
We wouldn’t be here without the great assistance from coach Parseghian and coach Holtz.”

Life is complex. Lou HATED Kelly for leaving for LSU. And Lou has gotten more and more emotionally outspoken as he has aged. ... including politically on topics which he frankly is not particularly well versed in. Also, as a head coach at Notre Dame, I'm sure that Coach Kelly had to try to be VERY subtle about making it clear that this was his team and his system. I believe that I read somewhere that Ara took Kelly off the hook immediately with a comment that he was not going to be talking about things that were the new coach's business. Knowing Lou's personality, one wonders if he could resist that sort of thing.

Lou's politics are spot on, just like his coaching.

I don't think Lou hates Kelly for leaving. I think Lou firmly disagrees with the reasons Kelly has stated for departing. Lou loves ND dearly and like any loved one, he steps in if he thinks someone is disrespecting. I have no doubt in my mind that Lou and BK never saw eye to eye on what makes ND unique. That doesn't make BK a bad person either. But the two have vastly differing approaches to both ND and people. It's noticeable and it can't be ignored.

There's rarely a right and a wrong when it comes to two party politics. Lots of celebrities throw their hat into the political arena, whether they're versed or not. Certainly the team was Kelly's, but previous coaches have often gone back to those that have been successful in the past. They've brought back guys like Lou and Ara for inspiration and motivation. Weis brought them back a number of times and was tight with Lou. Davie and BK...not so much, very little, although Lou was at SC for much of Davie's tenure (But I highly doubt he would have been invited to Davie's teams even if he was retired).

Bottom line: Lou always understood what ND was about. He talked about love for the school, the lady on the dome, love one another (Your teammates). I'm not sure BK ever bought into that. Freeman has been saying all the right things. He talks about how special a place it is, and that ND will change you if you let it. He's had a tight relationship with Lou and spoken to him a number of times since he took the job. You have to think it's been a positive influence and Holtz's passion has rubbed off on him a bit.

He’s not lying. I wrote him a letter when I was in elementary school and I still have his response framed. He gave a personal response that detailed to a lot of the things that I wrote. Cool dude.

I find it hard to believe Brian Kelly does not respect and admire Lou Holtz
In the end, it was just a job for him. It wasn't just a job for Lou. I don't think it's just a job for Marcus Freeman. That's the difference.

To a degree, he might respect him and admire him, but he may very well have put him on the pay no mind list.

Very cool. I'm sure I've told the story before, but my grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles all flew out to Hawaii for the '91 game. My uncles ran into Lou at the hotel and asked if he'd meet with my grandfather. Gramps wasn't even a donor at the time, just a big fan with some alumni offspring, he got all our tickets through another source. Lou said he would make time, told them to meet him in a conference room at a certain time. My uncles surprised Gramps, he had no idea he was going to meet Holtz. They got to talk for some time, Lou put him in touch with his rep at the university. He also shared that ND had just offered him a new 5 year contract, which was rare for them back then and the news wouldn't break for another week. Gramps ended up donating a lot of money after that meeting and eventually it led to season tickets in the gold seats. That meeting had a profound effect on my grandpa though, couldn't say enough nice things about Lou. He's still got the picture framed in his office where he's meeting and shaking hands with him. I'm sure Lou had better things to do than talk with a random fan prior to that Hawaii game, but Gramps has never forgotten it.

That's really nice. The same assistant who took the time to write you such a nice letter probably cannot be assigned to respond to more high-level (sorry, don't know your level) correspondence. That has to be from coach to coach.

Holy moley is BK is pridefully, spitefully small man.

I wrote Lou a letter when I was in basic training. Only time I ever wrote a celebrity or sports figure. I don't know why, but I did. I told him that I would imagine I was in Notre Dame tryouts during the grueling military workouts and that kept me going and never giving up or slacking off.
Every word was true and sure enough, he responded. It was pretty cool.

And for the record, it is possible to disagree with a person’s politics and still hold respect for that person. Lou loves Notre Dame. I share the same sentiment and respect him for that. Kelly should be ashamed of himself. You don’t treat people that way. I don’t care who you are.
