What a glorious night! The future is finally bright. Good riddance you soft pile of ….

We will no longer be the place where quarterbacks go to die.

100 million /7 years wow good for him. LSU ‘s 4th choice cost them a decade of setbacks. Yikes!

GO IRISH!!!!

You can fuck right off with this comment. It is unnecessary and short sited thanks to your hatred of BK.

This is a shit move by him, but the ramifications are larger than what you realize.

If you had asked the hypothetical, kind of teamless question at any point before today: "Would you hire an inexperienced, almost certainly not-ready-yet coach to take over a top ten program for the essential sole purpose of keeping an impressive recruiting class together?" the answer would have to no, right? The Freeman hire could be disastrous.

But yet if it's not Freeman, then the roster and recruiting classes fall apart, right? Cant figure out if I'm over or under reacting to that. The best chance to keep this thing moving forward is by keeping Freeman and doing everything you can to keep Bails, Taylor and Elston, as well as other general support staff for maximum continuity. Maybe throw Rees in with them as well but on the fence there.

Fickel makes a lot of sense if we were rebuilding. But we aren't trying to rebuild right now, we're trying to maintain and elevate. It's a tough place to be. If you could get Fickel and Freeman, that's the obvious home run, but don't sense that is a realistic option.

Sampson reporting there will be momentum among decision makers at ND to elevate Freeman. I would think at worst he becomes the interim and gets an audition to be the man for the bowl game unless there is an imminent home run hire.
I think its the best option honestly. With his chops on the recruiting trail, he obviously knows where championships start, and I would imagine he would demand the same effort from his staff. Keep Lance Taylor, promote Elson to DC, keep Mickens, O'Leary and Balis and Bowden/Lezynski and find ourselves a legit OC, OL and WR coach. As previously mentioned, Hartline should be the first call.

Four other words:

Lincoln Riley
Ryan Day

The coaching situation at ND would be more similar to Oklahoma and pOSU at the time. Washington hired Jimmy Lake after Chris Peterson had successive years of regression. Freeman is a more viable option of maintaining what we got going instead of a rebuild.

Holtz won a title at ND because he was a good coach, great communicator and a relentless recruiter. Saban is built with the same cloth. You need someone who demands that excellence from the players and the staff, and lives it too. For ND to be where they want to be, they need someone like that. Fickell may be that, he may not be, but I think he could at least keep the ND train from derailing But that's not what I want personally. Freeman shows the elite signs of relating with the players, recruiting at the highest levels and genuinely being a man that people would be proud to be associated with. There are very few sure things and no matter what ND does at this point, it's going to be a risk. But if I am betting on someone, I am betting on someone who has the traits and who has demonstrated their ability in person. I am 100% in camp Freeman.

Say what you want about Kelly not being able to get over the hump in the CFP/title game, but this hurts. I was always a big BK believer going back to when I was 15 looking at coaching candidates after Weis got fired. I defended him through some of the early struggles, and it was extremely gratifying seeing him get ND to the level we’ve been at the past 5 seasons. I figured he would retire here, and with the next couple classes coming in plus the star potential of Buchner, I thought there was an outside chance we could finally take the final leap towards winning a title.

If we whiff on Fickell or don’t pull a wild A list name out of our ass like Urban, I fear what this program could regress back to without him.

Freeman HC, Elston to DC and keep the rest of the defensive staff (Hopefully). Attempt to keep Lance (co-OC) and get Hartline as WR/co-OC. Go out and get a grey QB and OL coach. Done. The thing with Freeman you can tell he would hold his staff to the same standards as he caries himself. He’d demand coaches who can relate to their players and are going to work hard on the recruiting trail. None of this scrambling at the last minute to get another QB or WR in the class or leaving huge gaps in defense recruiting like BVG.

He left the team when they still have a realistic shot at making the playoffs. He quit on them, I wouldn’t show up to that 7 am meeting if I was an 18 to 22 year old player

I mean, he did interview for the NFL right before the national tittle game, soooooo

There's more to the Washington story than Peterson lost his edge and Lake replaced him. All I'll say is Jimmy Lake was not very well liked but this is the world we live in today.

Like Lax said, Freeman's the only rational choice and the admin will push it.

I’d go one of the three Buckeyes: Freeman, Fickell, Hafley. In that order. The good thing there is it probably gets your foot at Hartline if Rees goes South too. At least a crack.

If they go real search and not just Freeman or Fickell. I think Elko probably gets a call. Do not like the thought of Campbell, he’d have to learn how to big big recruit and we already sat through that.

Just trying to lighten the mood a bit. ND will be fine. It’s still a destination job. Yes, the timing isn’t great… but it never really is. While it stinks having to look for a new HC this close to signing day, I would rather go at it optimistically with the desire to start a new and potentially better next chapter in ND football.

These just set us back years. I’ll imagine we’ll see a significant drop off.

FWIW, Hafley just got an extension.
