How about Tom Herman crapping his pants so far at Texas? Many thought he was the ND savior, but if he can't recruit and win at Texas, he would've got eaten alive at ND. Hindsight's 20/20 I guess?

LSU fans have to be thinking they may have dodged a bullet there, right?

I hope when BK thinks it’s time for him to retire from ND Matt Rhule is available to be his successor. Matt Rhule would be perfect at Notre Dame IMO.

Posted this in another thread but probably best suited here. If we beat Stanford it would be only the second time in school history that we've won 10+ games in 3 consecutive seasons. Last and only other time was 91, 92, and 93. I'd say that's pretty damn good.

And 4 of the last 5. I think he's got at least a few more years.

Ideally he doesn’t hang on past his expiration date. I think a HC emeritus Brian Kelly would be a great help for his successor in navigating the pitfalls which marred the first half of Kelly’s tenure.

That's a big concern for me. I'd really like to see Kelly and ND part on good terms. Seems more likely that the transition to his successor will be handled better that way too.

Agreed, it'd be nice if the transition was similar to that at Oklahoma. Thank the guy for everything he's done while acknowledging that we need to go in a new direction.

I also think it’s the first time we’ve had back to back undefeated home records since 88-89

They , Clausen an Quinn were gun-slingers. The offensive scheme never worked for Weis. They became one dimensional

Wait...a quarterback who broke several ND passing records under Weis couldn't handle his playbook?

You're right in that they were one dimensional. They couldn't run consistently because strength/ conditioning/ nutrition sucked and they had some guy named Frank Verducci as their O line coach. Weis wanted to run but couldn't.

Just one nit on this. I think it's right to point out that 10 wins 3 years in a row is good, but it can be a bit deceiving when put into historical context.

ND did not play in bowl games regularly until the 1970's and didn't start playing 10 games a year regularly until the 1950's. So a guy like Frank Leahy never got the opportunity to win 10 games in each season. I mean, the guy didn't lose a game for four seasons, but only won 10 games once during that span.

Ara played 11 games in 4 seasons, 12 games once and 10 games 6 times. More importantly, ND finished outside the top 10 in 2 of those years, never outside the top 15.

The most fair comparison is Lou, but Lou still had the 12 game barrier most years. From 1988-1993, ND lost 9 games. They played in 74 games. Only one year was below 10 wins, 1990. But that year ND beat the then ranked #4 Michigan, #24 MSU, #2 Miami, #9 Tennessee, #18 USC. To boot, they should have beaten #1 Colorado in the Orange bowl. This years team couldn't hold a candle to that team.

So, simply put, I think ND and BK have done a great job to get to where they are, even with the known deficiencies. But when we start putting historical monikers on the last three years, I think we really need to pump the brakes. It's historically good, but not historically great, especially in light of the margin of loss and lack of elite victories over that time period.

So you're saying Leahy lacked that crucial 11th data point. Shoulda joined a conference.

Agree. Of the likely candidates right now Rhule seems the best fit for our job. But, if he can produce another year like this one at Baylor, he won't be there long.

Went into a UPS store tonight to send a package. The guy behind the counter see my Irish cap and asks, "Are you a Notre Dame fan, or just wearing the hat?" I wear that hat everyday, so I answer "Both?" He responds "I can't stand Brian Kelly. I'm a UC fan and the way he left Cinncinnati was shady. He had all this talk about doing things the right way, then he left before finishing what he started. He could have at least stayed for that bowl game and Bearcats may have won (The Sugar Bowl they lost to Florida 51-21)." "Uh, yeah, sure."

Not terribly surprised there are still salty Cinci fans, but they've been through 3 coaching changes since then and are in the midst of another 10 or 11 win season. When do you move on?

I know plenty of Cincinnati fans that have that opinion but to randomly start up a conversation with an ND fan after so much time has passed is pretty weird.

When I was in college Craig Bohl accepted a job offer from Wyoming during the FCS playoffs and the school had him stay on until the end of the playoffs. It was a total clusterf*ck.

The dude took a new job. No matter where the heart is, their head is at the new job. Once you accept the job, leave. Unless the game is the next day or something, just go. Awfully difficult to do right by both programs at that point.

This.

That's huge. If BK could have had the knowledge in Year 1 that he did in Year 5-6, I think we would be seeing an entirely different landscape. A much more successful landscape. People are hard on BK, I'm one of them, and it shouldn't have taken him 8-10 years to do what he's doing, but the bottomline is that he IS doing it. Recruiting is on fire, or seemingly as on fire as it's gonna get, and we are racking up 10 win seasons. BK beats Clemson next year, I think most critics will be somewhat satisfied. Mannn, Nov 7th is gonna be a big one!

It's funny, but I used to have a neighbor who went to Central Michigan and he felt the same way about BK.

With the depth we have on the defensive line, the nearly intact returning oline, and the skill position players lined up for next year... we should better. We only play 3 true road games and our biggest game is at home against Clemson 2/3 through the year (and we play an SEC team to boost our SOS). We are set up very nicely for 2020. Time for Kelly to get us back in the playoffs?

Sept. 5 — Navy (MetLife Stadium, E. Rutherford, N.J)

Sept. 12 — ARKANSAS

Sept. 19 — WESTERN MICHIGAN

Sept. 26 — vs. Wake Forest (Charlotte, N.C.)

Oct. 3 — vs. Wisconsin (Green Bay, Wis.)

Oct. 10 — STANFORD

Oct. 16 — at Pitt

Oct. 31— DUKE

Nov. 7 — CLEMSON

Nov. 14 — at Georgia Tech

Nov. 21 — LOUISVILLE

Nov. 28 — at USC

I really like CBK.....but he seems a bit disinterested the past month or so. I think he may have an NFL offer out there or something more easy in CFB ranks.

It's gonna be interesting when he just up and leaves. The boards will be like when we lose and not when we win.

Brian Kelly can't win BCS bowl games

In all seriousness that was Tebow's senior year, his last game. I don't care if Belichick coached the Bearcats, they weren't winning. That Florida team was STACKED.

Yeah I mean if you cheer for a mid level program, a FCS program, or lower you can't be made when a coach moves on to advance their career.

Arkansas is currently listed as Sagarin's #113 teamat a rating of 58.73

ND could raise the SOS by a touchdown by playing Arkansas STATE instead. Sagarin rates the Red Wolves as his #81 team with a rating of 65.29

Obviously many many variables to play out. And Wake-Wisconsin-Stanford-Pitt is a rugged stretch. But we should be favored in every game up to Clemson. If we're undefeated for that, would be our biggest home game in how long? Then Louisville and USC should both be significantly better than the versions we saw this year. Could be a fun November.
