Brian Kelly would be at the top of the Texas list.
Charlie Strong would get serious consideration, as he's had Lou Holtz in his corner for a long time. I don't see Kevin Sumlin leaving A&M anytime soon unless the NFL came calling. He has it perfect right now in that he has a strong up-incoming program in the SEC with a excellent recruiting base. If they can get back to their Wrecking crew days, I can see them overtaking Alabama as tops in the SEC. As good as Stanford has been the last few years, I don't know that they can get any better, so he may consider a change if ND came calling. A dark horse candidate could be James Franklin at Vanderbilt. Kliff Kingsbury would be a guy to keep tabs on and see how he does at Texas Tech.
Would a move to Texas be considered? I would not think that it is a better job than ND, but I am biased by my being an ND fan.

Obviously it's all ultimately in the eye of the beholder...but yeah, Texas, is a mighty fine job. For 'crootin (WhiskeyJackyl reference), winning potential, money (paid out and brought in), support, and popularity reasons, many believe it to probably be the best job in the country...definitely top 3. ND, with its mediocre results on the field (post-Holtz and pre-BK) and academic restrictions, tends to be more fluid in its "rank" as a coaching job.
Sure, you and I (and others here) believe ND to be better than Texas, but much of the coaching world would believe Texas to be the superior job.
That would be a lateral move at best. I don't really see anything at Texas that is better than Notre Dame.
***While Irish fans still wait for an official announcement of a contract extension for head coach Brian Kelly, Blue & Gold Illustrated continues to release tidbits from a sit down with athletic director Jack Swarbrick.
And while Swarbrick continues to stress that a Kelly contract will get done sooner than later, it does appear that the Irish assistant coaches got a much deserved bump in their contracts as well as some other perks that kept the coaching staff in tact.
This from BGI’s conversation with Swarbrick:
One common complaint among former head coaches at Notre Dame is that they didn’t have the money to hang on to high quality assistants. Despite interest from several other teams, the Irish were able to keep its full 10-man staff intact this offseason. Swarbrick said that was an important focus for him and Kelly.
To get there Swarbrick said he loosened the purse strings to stay competitive with other top tier programs. He also said the assistants have more opportunities to add responsibilities and prepare for a future head coaching career than they have in the past.
“Certainly you have to respond to the market, and that’s an element of it, but it’s broader than that,” he said. “It’s about the level of engagement and responsibility you give them. Reinforcing the message that you are prepared to do whatever you can to help them achieve career objectives. Those are all pieces of it.”
Where is all this talk of BK to Texas coming from? I hadn't heard anything about that.... It'll be an interesting situation to follow. Thats for sure.
Brian Kelly would be at the top of the Texas list.
When the report first came out, I couldn't believe Kelly would leave for Texas either, but it's definitely out there (maybe just a ploy?).
And the Kelly to Texas thing will gain legs if Texas falters and ND doesn't lock Kelly up.
Wait, so we went from TP saying BK would be at the top of Texas' list should TX be in the market for a new coach to there being actual reports of this? Do you have any links to these "reports"?
Kelly and Martin have been to the Pats camp a lot! I think it also has to do with Kelly and Belichick getting along that well!
There has been a lot of talk about Kelly leaving in the last 24 hours. Before it came up, I had the thought that if Belichick retired, that would be the dream NFL job for Kelly, and he would have his successor in place for ND. Just a momentary thought.
Also, I heard that there has been a lot of O-talk around a less than mobile QB, and there has been quite a bit of D-talk, too!
I don't buy any of this nonsense. Kelly isn't going anywhere. I haven't seen a link to any report. All I've seen is speculation.
Why don't you buy it? Just because there hasn't been a published report doesn't mean there isn't whispers. Sometimes people in the know can't go to the media with the information they've heard, or journalists can't publish what they hear, etc etc. The point is there is a lot that goes into writing a report and even though the substance may be there, the clearance may not.
If the admin has not taken care of the staff as the whispers suggest, I could definitely see Kelly leaving. It is not as if he is an alum or has some other connection to the university other than being Catholic. I could definitely see him taking a job with more money/conditions more conducive to winning. And Texas would be a job like that, as would a few NFL opportunities.
I hope we don't lose Kelly. It would be... rough

I know of very few sports writers who would keep a story this big under their hat.
You don't think stupid @ss rumors aren't at the heart of many business negotiations. Man you should have seen it when Ross Perot was taking over GM!
Rumors definitely can play a part in business negotiations, but at what point can we differentiate between what is a business ploy and what is under legitimate consideration?
Does it really make sense?

BK doesn't need rumors to negotiate with ND. They know he is grossly underpaid and he will have higher paying opportunities by seasons end.
I'm not putting much stock in the rumors that have sprung up on this thread today. Let's get back to speculating future coaching candidates or when ND will announce his extension (my guess is December) or close a thread that never should have been created to begin with.
