I am an avid reader and now that the reading material is starting to deteriorate on here, I am looking for some good books to read. I have read quite a few sports books, but am leery to jump to other genre's. Discuss

Read the book Resurrection about Notre Dame. Funny how closely it parallels our current situation... well, except we haven't turned it around yet.

You should read Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. It's the first book of an epic series. And if you like that, you should watch the show on HBO. If that isn't your style, I'd suggest the classics: Count of Monte Cristo, Mark Twain, and Hemingway are my favorites.

The Yankee Years on Torre was a somewhat harder read than moswt baseball books but it was very good and at times very eye opening.

If you are looking for something outside of sports... get a value of Dickens... can't beat that...

for fiction I loved The Witching Hour by Anne Rice... no. really. I only read it because read everything I own at the time and my wife had a few old remance novels from high school and THAT... so i tried it...

really, really good story telling... loved that book.

Misread your post....

For OTHER genres, I know this is a mainstream one, but The Hunger Games was excellent. I read the first book in a day because I couldn't put it down... went out and got the other 2 and finished all 3 within a four day period. Very good books.

I would honestly... some of these classic works are worth it... I would go with "Tale of Two Cities" though... love me some Dickens...

I have an deep interest in Napoleonic Era military history.
So War and Peace sucked me right in.
Hell I even have a rough concept album planned around the story. Hahaha
That of course will never be finished.

i have heard the hunger games is good, leery to pull the trigger to buy it. What is it about? I have read the Josh Hamilton book and it was very good

Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms (specifically Drizzt's stories), A Song of Ice and Fire are a few places to search if you think about fantasy novels.

"Survivor" Chuck Palahniuk
"American Psycho" Bret Easton Elis
"Frankenstein" Mary Shelley
"A Farewell to Arms" Ernest Hemingway
"Kitchen Confidential" Anthony Bourdain (truer than most realize)

Easton Elis and Palanhiuk are two of my faves, their styles are unique and their ability to intertextualize authors like Doestoevsky is quite amazing (to me anyway)

Fair warning though, they are "out there" in terms of their topics, but are excellent reads nonetheless

I enjoy fiction, but truly get engrossed in non-fiction. Here are two books anyone should enjoy (IMO):

All Quiet on the Western Front-a classic

The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers-currently reading this

If you're a glutton for punishment, try:

Mitrokhin Archives-fascinating book, but loooong!

The Aubrey–Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian is a good read. The books follow the career of a English Naval Officer from Lieutenant to Admiral throughout the world's oceans and demonstrates that the Napoleonic War was truly the First World War.

It's 21 volumes hard bound or paperback. The hard copies are about $25 each new. The whole set paperback can be found used for around $50.

It's a lot easier to follow that War and Peace.

My $0.02 as far as sports books, check out The Power of One, When pride Still Mattered and the book Facing Ali. The first and the latter are boxing based.

For you fantasy nuts out there, check out The Malazan Book of the Fallen. That is if you want to know where Whiskeyjack got his handle, and if you have time to read a 10 book series of ~11k pages haha.

Game of Thrones sounds awesome,def my type of book, but I made the mistake of starting an incomplete series in the 7th grade... I am anxiously awaiting the final book in the Wheel of Time series set to be released later this year. 12 years later.

I just finished the book "Odd Man Out" by Matthew McCarthy. It's about his year in the minor leagues and the ups and downs of playing in Provo Utah. It was a very good book that's worth a look.
