The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It is the best book ever written as far as I am concerned. Just make sure you get the Peaver translation.

Have yet to tackle that one, but know many of it's references from modern literature.

"Notes from Underground" was very enjoyable

It's funny how so many of these books I have already picked up, which means all of our reading styles are similar. I usually read a few of the reviews on amazon or barnes and noble before I buy a book and it seems as if nobody really likes Tucker Max books

What can I say? Maybe I'm a little juvenile in that regard..

Did you get a chance to check out "Guts"?

Ya i took a look at it. I added it to the list to purchase here shortly

If you intend on buying "guts", then may I recommend just buying "Haunted" instead.

It has the short "Guts" plus about 8-9 other great shorts in it.

Here are a few off the top of my head:

"Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand-- history/WWII/bad-@ss dude and truly inspirational story
"At Home" by Bill Bryson-- history/curiosity/sh!ts and giggles
"A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving-- literature
"All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren-- literature

Unbroken rocks! Truly an amazing story. She (the author) also wrote the Seabiscuit book I believe.

FYI-Your avatar is disturbing....

Yeah, she did write Seabiscuit (haven't read it, but I've heard it's a great book). I'm amazed Unbroken hasn't been made into a movie, or that Louis' story isn't more known. This/his story needs to be told and celebrated-- unbelievable and truly inspirational!

I thought Brothers was ok. I believe Dostoevsky's best work was Crime and Punishment. If you guys want to read Brothers, read Crime and Punishment first to get a feel for his writing style.

i have heard the hunger games is good, leery to pull the trigger to buy it. What is it about? I have read the Josh Hamilton book and it was very good

The Hunger Games trilogy is actually very good. I was equally hesitant before I read them but they are very well-written. It's about a futuristic society that's divided into thirteen districts and once a year, two children from each district are entered into a battle royale to the death. It's emotionally touching and pretty awesome. I highly recommend it.

Going with "suitable for a wide range of tastes:"

Anything by Hunter S. Thompson including "Rum Diaries". (Coming out as a movie soon I see.)

Without knowing more about your tastes, this is the best I can do.

Michael Crichton books...especially the later ones...from Jurassic Park forward, his books start out with divergent people and tend to race to bring them all together while at the same time dipping a toe into reality by using mostly science that is happening now, but maybe bumped forward just a bit

Also...for thrill ride fun, Matthew Reilly...he has a couple of different series going and a couple stand alone ones and even a young adult one...these all move at a very fast rate but still draw you in

After reading through SO MANY posts yesterday, I'd say an English Dictionary should be at the top of many posters' list!

For Fiction Crichton was great... good flow, usually easy reads and very entertaining... Jurassic Park, Sphere, Case of Need, Rising Sun... many good books

After reading the posts on here, I must say my reading preference is quite different. I LOVE to read. I usually go thru 5 or 6 a month. It is one of the best stress relievers I have found. When I had my last surgery, I spent way to much money on iBooks. Here are my favorites:

Sue Grafton has a series of books about a fiesty female P.I. named Kinsey Millhone. They start with A is for Alibi and she has gotten to Vis for Vengeance. If you like mystery and comedy, this series can't be beat.

James Patterson has two detectives that he has a series on. They are Alex Cross (Along Came a Spider and Kiss The Girls were made into movies, but he has several more featuring Alex Cross. The other is an Irish Detective (I can't think of his name, I am having an IDIOT moment) that is very good.

Also, one of my students gave me a book while I was in the hospital that was REALLY good. It is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Sh*t My Dad Says, by Justin Halperm. This guy wrote a book about his dad and I would swear we have the same dad. It's well worth reading.

OK...I'll be "that guy" that lists it

The Harry Potter Series. And yes I was an adult when they came out. Actually I am a big audiobook guy (long commutes) and Jim Dale who reads the series does an incredible performance of bring each of the many characters to life.

Lol I would rather not. Maybe if there was no other books left in the world...maybe then

Then you might be the anti-Burgess Meredith

(really old TWILIGHT Zone reference...see humorous and ironic...not bad for Wed. afternoon)
