Right, true, especially the bolded parts.
Some posters in this thread have contended that repping is merely expressing disapproval or approval of a post, like a like/dislike or thumbs-up/thumbs-down function. The thing is, giving reps isn't just that ... reps, whether negative or positive, have an effect on a poster's numerical reputation rating. So a reasonable interpretation of a neg rep is to think not that the neg repper thinks your post is bad but that the neg repper thinks, based on a particular post, YOU are a bad poster and a bad member of this site such that your reputation rating should suffer.
So what, many of you say. Who cares. Your reputation rating on this site is like "Schrute bucks." It's meaningless in the big scheme of things. Of course that is true, and I agree that no one should get bent out of shape over the occasional neg rep. But at the same time, if you spend a fair amount of time on this site discussing ND football, and you interpret neg reps as an expression not of disapproval of your post but of you as a poster--as I have argued it is perfectly reasonable to do--I can see being offended or insulted about neg reps. I will not say that people shouldn't care about them at all, as some people are arguing. You could reasonably believe that a neg rep is inherently personal.
