You do recall Misters Rees and Calabrese getting arrested for assaulting a police officer a couple of years ago, right? They missed, what, one game apiece? This is probably more serious than that, but if it's a first-time thing, it seems a bit harsh to toss the kid.

That incident was in South Bend right? This may be different since it was not on campus or involving South Bend cops. I hope it's not as bad as as it sounds.

Glad it wasn't a bar fight, he's not 21. That would be serious trouble

I hope he can get his shit together and make it back.

If it happened at home and he gets a good lawyer it could all go down to misdemeanors and he could come back to school. I hope so because we all make mistakes.

No it was in the Youngstown area. And to be honest, its actually nicer on paper than what took place.

Assaulting a police officer is like jaywalking in Youngstown.

I hope not...

Anyway, just looking at the charges, it looks like the officers were stacking charges on the guy, half of those will be dismissed. Still, not something to take lightly.

At Notre Dame, Brian Kelly will not make any decision about Will Mahone's future at Notre Dame. No football coach will ever run the University of Notre Dame and I believe Brian Kelly does not want to run the University of Notre Dame.

The University will takes its time and evaluate carefully what happened, what corrective actions the student involved has taken and is taking and what disciplinary action is necessary.

In this Internet world as, TP points out, too many people expect instant answers with their smart phones and instant ability to communicate.

In the real world, these situations have to be carefully looked at and some time and deliberation taken to decide what the proper course of action is.

If as JimmyMac has stated Will Mahone is a great guy and this was a one time aberration, I think the University will take this into account in deciding what disciplinary action to take.

I still follow Notre Dame in the midst of the Cesspool "College Football" is becoming because to me Notre Dame TRIES to do the right thing and to win with integrity.

Notre Dame will not decide what to do based on Will Mahone's position on the depth chart. Last year, Notre Dame desperately needed Everett Golson for football success. He did not play and the football team suffered. But, the University did not suffer. The University of Notre Dame stood up for its principles - even when it hurt. Do not root for Notre Dame if you want football success at all costs. It will never happen.

The University of Notre Dame - not the football coach - ultimately runs the football program.

Principles are actually princples and actually mean something. Principles will be followed even when following them stings, it hurts and it bites. If principles are not followed they are empty words, mere slogans and a deliberate attempt to trick and deceive the public into thinking that these principles actually exist.

I went to high school with a guy that went to prison for assaulting a police officer.

Getting kicked out of ND may be the least of his worries right now.

A former player of mine is a cop in Warren, OH. I'll reach out to him to see what the scoop is.

If there's anything I have learned from cheering for the SEC and trouble hits, it's this. The initial police report looks bad for the player and then all kinds of speculation is thrown out there as to what actually happened. As the facts come out.... wait... forget the SEC. It's usually true.

As far as this incident, I would say let the facts come out, let the school do their due diligence, and then decide on what the appropriate actions should be. I hope the young man makes it through. Hate to see any of them get in trouble so bad that it impacts their future... either on the field or off.

This is one of the most articulate, enlightened, and comprehensive posts I have ever read. Certainly the pearl of this thread! So far.

Obviously I wasnt there but can speak from experience on getting into a bar fight and getting arrested. Let the facts play out guys. I was arrested for disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer, public intoxication and everything else they could throw at me. Was I guilty of fighting? Absolutely. Did I assault a police officer? Not at all. It usually sounds a lot worse in legal terms than what really happens on the street. I ended up with probation and a clear record after 2 years. I made a mistake, paid for it, and havent gotten in trouble since. Im now a captain on the FDNY, learned my lesson and moved on to live a good life. Hopefully Will can do the same. Dont judge too harshly until all the facts come out is all im saying.

Was curious who gave him the swollen eye? Was it the fight or the cops? I'm sure when the details come out it will become clear. Feel bad for the kid as Im sure the weight of the situation has hit him fully by now.

Really hope Will can come out of this OK. I don't like the knee jerk, throw him out mentality out there. I am very pleased to see the University work with people on minor offenses and give them a second chance. 15 years ago, Mike Floyd, Golson, Rees, et al would have been booted permanently. Zero tolerance helps no-one and wastes your initial investment in these kids. Give them a chance at redemption.

The undertones from "insiders" give the impression the incident was uglier than a basic bar fight. I hope it is not as bad as the "insiders" are implying. I don't know what type of area Will grew up in, or what type of hometown crowd he ran with. Good kids get into all kinds of bad situations, maybe he was targeted b/c he was "making it" or maybe there was history with some folks that provided ingredients for a recipe for disaster. I don't know and I imagine those that do will remain cryptic and condescending.

Prayers to Will. Hope he gets good council to minimize his life long impact from an all around unfortunate circumstance.
