This makes them sound like a playoff team.

You'd think the '88 Canes team is on the field for them this year the way their fans have been talking online. They're pretty sure they're going to stomp us like 2017 all over again. I don't see it. One ranked win in the last 3 years and it was the A&M team that later collapsed and fired Jimbo. No ranked wins last year, and they lost 3 of their last 4. I get that they think Beck is their savior and they brought in some transfers, but they've been pretty mediocre and they've lacked a winning culture. They're puffing their chests out over 10 wins last year despite losing to the good teams they faced, yet it's only the 2nd time since 2004 they've gotten 10 wins. We've had 10 or more wins every year since that 2017 game, save for the 2022 season with Buchner injured.

Miami always has a lot of star talent in some positions. Even the era where they were never a threat to win the ACC. That has to distort the preseason rankings.

What makes this even crazier is that last year they went 10-2 with a bunch of near loses with the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft and the greatest QB that they ever had. Which means they are expecting the same return from Beck and that their defense will flip over night starting a half dozen transfers on defense and replacing all of their top pass catchers.

Yep. This is what I don't get.
They had by some measures the best QB in college football last year and seem to expect no backsliding? Beck is a solid and experienced quarterback but there's a reason Georgia didn't seem to mind losing him - he's not THAT good - and he missed spring ball and has a bunch of new receivers. Then they've got half the defense that has literally never played a down together.
I wouldn't be surprised if Miami's quite good by season's end. I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs (they nearly did last year). But expecting them to blow up a deep, experienced, well-coached team like ours in Week One seems unrealistic.
If we lose, which we may, it'll likely be because Carr isn't quite ready for this stage and makes some key mistakes, but I'd trust our defense and running game to keep it close regardless.

IMO, the biggest factors in this are the defenses. We have a clear advantage when you compare defenses. Ours is experienced and deep. Miami doesn't have a lot of experience playing together and try as you might in practice, you can't duplicate game experience. I expect some missed assignments or tendencies that Denbrock will exploit.

Is the new DC implementing a new system? That could take some time to pick up.

Miami has a ton of work to do on both their offense and defense. They lost their top 6 pass catchers, their top rusher, and the #1 pick in the draft at QB. Beck is good, but he's moving into a system (Air Raid) that might accentuate his biggest weakness (unblocked pass rush).

There defense was pretty poor last year. They're going to start 4 transfers at DB.

They do have a good RT and DL (Bain), but they just don't have quality players across the board. If they hadn't pulled Beck in the portal, this would probably be a -7 line for the Irish.

While you would think this would be true, the Minnesota team would've been the same situation a year ago and he had them performing at a top level.

I can't remember where I read it, but it talked about how his system is more simplified than what Miami was running before. Would seem to minimize confusion and learning curve.

Big difference is he was inheriting a good, fundamentally sound defense at Minnesota because Rossi was a great DC. Not so much the case at Miami.

Miami has a 1st round DE by all accounts and the other one is expected to be good too. They have a 5-star DT in Justin Scott and some productive transfer from LA Tech inside as well. ISD says both their corners are studs and future NFL picks, and they have at least one NFL LB.

On offense their RT is an early NFL pick, RBs sound really good, and Beck can shred people if given time. They're a team with a lot of talent but this is a game we are built to win.

I feel bad for the Miami fans. When your reporters just pump sunshine up your butt for a month straight of course your expectations are inflated. I mean they are straight up boofing sunshine over there, they can't get enough of it.

Miami always has talented individual players. And yet...

This is where the hyperbole starts rolling in. One of their starting corners started 1 game at Wisconsin last year. Wisconsin's pass defense was not very good.

Maybe they made a mistake and thought Jaire Alexander transferred from GB to the Hurricanes.

Anyone who is nervous just go back and watch back the aTm game from a year ago. Freeman will have the boys embracing whatever atmosphere they throw at us.

I'm prepared for a clunky first half as they sell out for the run and Carr shakes off a bit of early game jitters, then I expect a similar result. We will wear them down in the second half and pull away.

This defense is just too talented, even without Golden, to let the dam break. Miami isn't scoring on us at will. If/when Carr figures it out, they won't be able to stop us. Even if he doesn't, nobody else was able to truly contain Love/Price for 4 quarters last year and our OL should be improved from a year ago.
