Great read. Sometimes when we spend so much time fussing over recruits who ass around during their recruitments it makes you think about the thousands of kids who would give their left arm for chance to attend school at ND.

An unexpected visit // News // Notre Dame Magazine // University of Notre Dame

Thought this was an incredible story. I hope everyone reads it

Wow, what an amazing story.

I have to say (I forget if I already posted this) I sat one row in front of his dad during the Rice game. Really nice guy, and boy is he proud of James. After every kick, kickoffs and place kicks, he cheered wildly, borderline obnoxiously. After the field goal, he cheered so obnoxiously that I felt obligated to mimic him to bust his balls a little bit; it was only then that I found out that James was his son, and I quickly backtracked, lol (cheering obnoxiously for your son is obligatory, as everyone knows). I had thought he just had a weird kick fetish. We struck up a brief conversation, and apparently he travels to as many games as he can, and he told some funny stories about Ole Miss, which I ate up because tailgating there is on my bucket list.

Anyway, the Hairstons seem like a great family. So glad James was able to have that experience at ND. It's amazing what an impact the Grotto has on people.

I legitimately teared up reading that.

Hope James doesn't catch flack at Rice for saying, "I wish I could have come here."

OFD's Punter Bro just published film breakdown of our ST against Purdue. Isn't it nice to have special teams that don't play like they came off a short bus?

OMG yes...It's been the one area that seemed neglected under Kelly. Still would like to see him try to block a punt at some point. Can anybody remember a Kelly team blocking a punt? Or even attempting to block a punt? Anyway, it's looked really good the first three games.

I distinctly remember a blocked punt returned for a TD by Robert Blanton v. Utah. Was the watershed moment of 2010:

Going for a block is a high risk/ high reward strategy, so it's best deployed situationally. Most of the time you're better off trying to set up a strong return. Much more reliable.

By the time he leaves, Jarron Jones might be most remembered for being ND's best ever FG/PAT blocker. That guy is sneaky good at timing it and even when he misses, he's damn close.

We tried to block one like once from 2011-2013. I honestly forget when it was. And we got a roughing the kicker, and Kelly literally always went Punt Safe after that.

We always keep 2+ guys a few yards off the line on FGs too. I think Kelly is scarred on Special Teams still from that MSU game in 2010.

Tears rolled down my cheeks. Notre Dame du Lac - Our Lady of the Lake. French. Yet we are the Fighting Irish. An insane, irresistible combination of faith, spririt and football. It makes no sense. It makes all the sense in the world.

You never know when the refs are gonna forget to check the play clock...or miss an obvious holding call. /noitalics

Undoubtedly that's was paramount in his mind for 4 years while conceding field position consistently.
