I'm sure we will dull it down for Rice so we don't show to much for Michigan. Then after we play Michigan we will realize we are really that bad and we weren't dulling anything.

Isn't that how it usually goes.

and the beat goes on....

The new field should negate any of the slipping we have seen in previous seasons in wet conditions. Rain never has any effect on QB's really, its the wind that "ruins" the passing game

It seems like everybody's forgetting that we just got some shiny new field turf. I aint worried bout no rain and slop!

The horses will still be able to run. Nothing changes, maybe it's just a little less comfortable with rain.
Just because we've eliminated mud doesn't mean that all slipping is gone. Wet plastic is still slicker than dry plastic.

Anyone else feeling slightly nervous for this one? Just seems like its been all bad news for awhile.

Agree.......We tend to play to the level of the opponent. I would love to steamroll Rice.

As long as you don't hate us as much as Michigan, I can live with it.

Never. you will never attain that status. If you'd like to know why, read the article on Fielding Yost the KKK legend.

Steamed Rice actually sounds pretty good. Getting hungry.

Rice +21 is the easiest money of the year.

So you are saying you don't like my ND - 23.5 ticket from Vegas sitting at home? Mind you, I couldn't lose that morning so I knew placing those bets would guarantee and absolute shellacking of Rice (and more than 8.5 wins for the season).

Nice, strike while iron hot. I think my angle is more of the unknown and unproven. Also, the fact that we'll play the hide the sausage game ahead of Michigan is always dangerous.

Again, my head and heart disagree on this one. My heart says we cover easily, especially in the rain. My head says we haven't come within less than 21 points in a game like this- strong P5 team- in years. The closest recently would be a 17 point loss to a 7-6 Northwestern team in 2010.

I think the spread is good. If you forced me to bet I would take Rice, otherwise I would lay off of it.

I'm going completely against my "bet on underdog against ND, bet on ND as the underdog" rule, but I wouldn't touch that bet. I have no idea what's going to happen.

A few things are certain, one you're Greek and two you'll be partying for the game.

The fact we only picked up 2.5 points with the lost players is what surprises me. Then the rain, rain can't be good for higher scoring affairs needed to produce that big of a margin of victory.

However, I was unstoppable. That means we cover 23.5 for the weekend and 8.5 for the season, case closed.

Don't like it one bit. That's a lot of points and I feel like our defense will give up a decent amount of points.

Yeah, it could be slick. I'm not sure it wouldn't help us, though. Rice's secondary may have some trouble turning their hips and running with Brown and Fuller on a wet surface.

What about our secondary turning their hips with Rice's receivers?

Craps = winner
Black Jack = winner
Poker = winner
Roulette = winner
Sportsbook = TBD

Don't argue with fate. Just accept that we will cover 23.5 for the weekend and 8.5 for the year. (Now if I had only sacked up and put money on the 12-1 odds they were giving to win the 'Ship.)

It can certainly cut both ways.

I'd give the nod to us in the rain for a couple reasons. Our offensive line should dominate. I expect a big dose of Folston, Cam, Bryant early. They won't be able to handle our line without help from their secondary. As soon as they start flying to the line in run support, Kelly will hit them over the top with play action. We're going to catch them cheating up and it's hard for a DB to recover on a slick surface. I doubt our secondary will be relied upon as heavily to stop the run. They'll have a chance to sit back, read their keys and play honest football.

We've practiced on our own field. Not much and probably not in the rain, but we will be more familiar with the surface and it'll give us an advantage, even if it is slight.

We have the same turf, so I doubt that will make much difference. Can't disagree with the logic of your post besides that however- I think that is likely how it plays out. We need turnovers. I think we need to be +2 at a minimum and maybe +3 to have a chance. The rain helps that possibility.

Good post and I hope you are right. Now that we are inching closer to the season actually kicking off, my nervous level is raising quickly. I expect nothing when ND takes the field because we are capable of everything from awful to awesome.

Our field has been field turf for a number of years. We are used to it!

22 freshmen and sophomores, and that's not including Jarron Jones, CJ Prosise, or John Turner. Holy shit.

How tall is Cody Riggs? This depth chart says 5'0", but I'm guessing that should be 6'0"

Assuming Jordan Taylor (our best receiver) plays, I would expect us to try and get him manned up on one of your shorter CB's (Taylor is 6'5") and try and throw it up to him on fades/back-shoulder fades. He is very athletic and has great hands. That position battle, and potentially Christian Covington if he can get in a 1-on-1 situation with one of your OL, is really the personnel matchup where we will have the advantage.

I know there is another Owl on the board, but apparently only one of us can spell 'suffering'.

After the trouble of getting able to post on their board, I wasn't going to try to get my login name corrected for a fat finger error!

Figures it would be a fellow Rice nerd to complain about my spelling!

Riggs is short, but he is also our best corner. Played at Florida and transferred here for his fifth year. Very solid player.

Thanks, didn't know about the turf.

Turnovers are always key, especially in bad weather. I suspect Kelly will have a tight leash on Golson if the conditions are bad and none of our backs have a propensity to fumble (not that I can remember). I hope we keep it clean.

Special teams could play a role. We have a great kicker but our return game is non-existent and our coverage is mediocre, at best. Kelly thinks they'll be vastly improved this year. We'll see. How are your special teams?
