I believe this to be the weirdest ND season I've watched --- and it's almost entirely because of Marshall.
We would have been forgiven for Stanford (nasty old irritating rival) and praised for OSU, but Marshall ...
holy crap. What bastard universe did THAT come out of?

Any ranker of teams must be looking at that and thinking: What-in-the-He!l do I do about Notre Dame?
Rate them in the area of 15? or 35? Marshall looked GREAT that game, and that RB like an NFL all-pro.
Where has THAT gone?

Given the utter absurdity of that in our record, we will be lucky to get higher than 15 even with a win out,
and even then everyone will still be wondering.

Clemson by the way was viewed by LOTS of commentators as phony,
waiting to be exposed. (but until that happened, you had to "honor" them.)

Stanford was so frustrating because that is a team that we should have smoked on paper, much like Syracuse. Their offensive ineptitude and their overmatched, short-handed DL should have yielded 300+ yards rushing, but we got stuffed play after play, until Estime finally got us rolling only to fumble. It was just one mistake after another, drive after drive. The defense played well enough, but still let up a huge TD drive after we took the first lead. That will be a game that bugs me until we pummel Stanford again and put it to rest.

Definitely the weirdest ND season I've watched. It's up there with 2014 when we started 6-0, should've won in Tallahassee vs. #1 FSU, only to lose a heartbreaker and go on to lose 5/6 before beating a solid LSU squad in a bowl game.

Though I must admit, through 9 games, this team is certainly on a much better trajectory heading into the home stretch than that '14 squad.

One week at a time, beat Navy.

Moved up to #18, now the highest ranked 3 loss team. Cant be unhappy with that considering our performances against Marshall, Sanford, Cal and Navy.

Of note: Oregon loses close rivalry game to 2 loss conference opponent and drops 6 spots, Ole Miss loses close game to 2 loss conference opponent and only drops 3 spots.

It’s weird but it isn’t THAT weird. All those bad teams that ND struggled against were good run/bad pass defenses. They sold out against the run and ND couldn’t punish them for it. I think it’s pretty straightforward formula for ND opponents. The Irish just cooked up a lot of misdirection to attack Clemson LBs but kept it more vanilla against lesser teams.

Jack Coan would have feasted on those defenses, which gives me optimism that this is a fixable personnel problem.

It's very fixable. We're a top ten/borderline top five team everywhere else on the roster, with an FCS quarterback, and that's killing us.

We wouldn't need a superstar at QB, just Ian Book or really any competent P5-level starter, and we're 9-1 and deeply in the playoff hunt.

We also need a more competent OC. I could have gained more than 6 yards in half against Navy, that is unexcusable.

Delighted with the ranking, especially given how the season has gone. I have always held that a top 15 AP finish is what I need to conclude the Irish had a good season. We're probably top 10 if we win out, and if we lose close to USC then win a good bowl game we could even still finish top 15. If we win out I'm taking back every mean thing I said about tommy and marcus

In this scenario, it's much easier to forgive and forget about the Marshall/Stanford blunders and chalk them up as HC growing pains. The optimism for next szn would be off the charts.

Can't believe we're already down to our last two regular season games...time always flies in the fall. Enjoy it while it lasts, gents.

Go Irish, beat Eagles.

Yes and beyond even the optimism it will have made overall a wonderful Fall 2022 of football despite all the frustrations. After Clemson I was 100% confident we'd be beating USC. Now I think we lose, but who knows.

I think it'll be a really good game, USC is charmin soft defensively, but man is Caleb Williams a good QB. I agree with your assessment though if we beat USC we'll be top 15, if not top 10, heading into bowl season.

I hate being nervous about SC,… the last few years were so nice just knowing we’d handle them

We should be wildly nervous about Southern Cal.

They can score in bunches. If we can't Clemson them... we're in big trouble.

Hopefully Tommy has a power screen or two in his playbook.

Mostly I agree? But I always worry about Southern Cal.

I know I'm in the minority, but I hate them so much more than Michigan. (And I hate Michigan with the heat of 10 burning Suns)
This. When SC is right the whole universe is wrong

I could be wrong but I feel like that's majority of ND fans unless you're like me and actually live in MI and have to put up with that mouth breathing fan-base on the daily.

No, the ND fans from nothern Indiana feel the same way. But yeah, it's because they've had to deal with Michigan fans.
SC fans literally pay no attention until they are winning and then it's super over the top in your face blow hard like they've been real fans the whole time.... good lord it's grating as fuck.
