Luke and Snoke both dying after being set up in TFA as integral to the story and eventual resolution throws everyone off.

I figured the final conflict/resolution was going to be Rey finally bringing true balance, as Luke and Snoke were out of the way, leaving her to deal with Kylo.

The Force generating a true wildcard with no connection to the Skywalker lineage made so much sense as a way to close the Skywalker chapter and open up Disney’s new Star Wars universe with almost no limits on new IP… and they fuckin ruined it by making her a Palpatine and killing Kylo in the most predictable way.

They could’ve done almost anything else that’s more interesting… Rey and Kylo realize together that both sides of the Force must coexist, and they come to a grudging understanding, or one/both become gray Jedi, or they both bite the dust and the Force resets with a bunch of kids we don’t even know yet. Could’ve gone anywhere with it!

Yep. The only thing TLJ made impossible is doing the exact OT plot again. Not being able to rehash the original trilogy =/= there's no way to satisfactorily continue this narrative.

Then Rise of Skywalker basically retconned itself to do the Original Trilogy again anyway lol. Surprise, it sucked.

Rise of Skywalker was the biggest pile of shit in the whole trilogy (followed by the Phantom Menace). Although to be far to Rise, the choices made in TLJ put it in a rough spot to craft any cohesive narrative.

Completely agree. I have a bunch of thoughts on comments made here, but the ones that come immediately to mind are:

1. The Last Jedi sucked, but if anyone deserves flak for going against Luke's character, it's Abrams. Having him hiding away for an entire movie in TFA was his decision, and Rian Johnson had to in some way explain that in TLJ. The latter failed, but it was the former's decision that put us in that mess in the first place.

2. Out of the three made by Disney, the Rise of Skywalker is so, so, so much worse than TLJ. TLJ took big swings and missed, which I respect (even though some scenes are just absolutely awful; the casino planet, I'm looking at you). The Last Skywalker is just pure trash, dragged through mud and set on fire in a dumpster ("someone, Palpatine returned." Just awul).

I got super sick a few weeks ago and actually re-watched all 9 movies. I didn't despite TLJ as much as I did on first view, but wanted to barf once it was over. With TLS? I wanted to barf the entire film. It's just complete rubbish.

Oh, and Andor is the best Star Wars production since the original trilogy. It's excellent, riveting stuff.

It's astounding to me that Disney acquired this landmark cultural franchise and did not carefully plan out the plot for all 3 sequel trilogy movies before director choices were made. Genuinely floored that the prevailing narrative is "Abrams screwed up which led to Johnson really screwing up which led to Abrams really, really screwing up."

because disney has no plan ever; just picks something and then appoints mostly woke jokes(Snow White, etc) or those wanting to make it all about what they want which is Abrams
the process of choosing show runners is so totally screwed up its hard to imagine them doing worse if they wanted to

Which is why Andor was so good--Disney didn't expect it to be big, so they didn't meddle as much.

For the one poster who did not believe Luke was a better person then his father, I make this point:

Luke never murdered children.

Bingo!! The lack of vision for the trilogy is amazing.

TLJ is the single worst film ever made by man for many reasons,… I’d rather watch Manos the Hands of Fate on loop and analyze Torgo’s drug induced spasms than ever subject myself to that snuff film again. (Insert haters-ball gif)
You need to watch "Attack fron Inner Earth" or Mike Meyers' "Cat in the Hat" to reset your worst-movie bar.

the last 3 movies were such a mess because they shouldn’t have been made at all. I’m in the camp that the main story arc is the rise, fall and redemption of anakin skywalker, which wraps in Return. The last 3 movies couldn’t decide what they wanted to be, so everyone’s pet desires got thrown in.

The entire sequel trilogy is a joke and is the primary driver of the franchise's cultural decline (along with inevitable Disney oversaturation). The characters were all terrible and the story unoriginal. It's why nothing from the sequels has had any staying power whatsoever with fans.

Rey was a Mary Sue. Kylo was an emo boy. Finn was irrelevant, Poe was a joke. Rose was Rose. And then they massacred each and every one of the OT characters on top of it all.

I saw a likely fake news story that Disney is considering rebooting the franchise and acting like the sequel trilogy never happened. That would be great but they don't have the guts to do it.
The idea of a combined Sequel-Reboot is incoherent. It was obvious that the plot would not make sense.

The sequels should have told a net new story in the SW universe without any of the OT characters or familial ties - something set hundreds of years after the TLJ. That way they could have invested all of their time and energy into development of the new characters instead trying to play the greatest hits and assassinating all the classic characters. Rey was terrible in retrospect but it was at least interesting when we thought she "came from nothing."

Rey was Anakin Part Deux - clearly that was the intent
Anakin had no father
but the Disney money grubbers ruined any chance it had to be good

I've always said that TROS is the worst movie I ever watched...that I wanted to love. Of course there's way worse ones out there, but I wanted to love that movie so bad, and I was rolling my eyes and checking my watch about halfway through. Same with the 2019 Hellboy. I adored the Guillermo Del Toro Hellboys and wanted the new one to be great as well. First movie I ever walked out of.

That Steve Deace tweet right above this reply makes some good points, starting with making Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy the jump off point for the next Star Wars movies. Zahn's books have been credited with being, at least partially, responsible for reviving interest in Star Wars after the original trilogy ended and the TV movies didn't really move the dial much. Unlike Snoke and the First Order, Thrawn has a fully fleshed out background and history that's interesting on its own. He didn't just appear out of nowhere, unlike a certain First Order that I could name...

I think this guy is actually onto something:

Basically what they’ve done with the movies already. Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019 and they haven’t released a movie since. Mando and Grogu is this summer but that doesn’t really even count IMO.

Out of curiosity, how? Isn't the park "set" during the sequels and all the rides are too? Seems like you would need to start the whole park over.
Sequel characters removed from walking arpund and OG characters added in. Different merch being added in. Not sure about the rides

There has been some serious chatter about them retconning the sequels. Shit like this gives me a glimmer of hope. Disney really has no reason to hold onto the sequels. They are universally hated. They don't even have a small rabid fanbase that would be upset about it like the prequels do.

Horror movie sequels are their own class of bad. Even Dante Alighieri couldn't repeat his initial success.

I loved the Zahn books, apparently there's a fan film
