Thoughts on the new Rogue One trailer?

Cinematography looks very nice. Digging the overall tone. A Chinese blind force user(?) is a little bit too cheesy for my taste.

I'm disappointed with the decision to make the stand-alone films in line with the events of the main saga. The Star Wars Universe is so huge and they decide to tell us stories about... Darth Vader and Han Solo and the Death Star. We already have those stories, and they're called Episodes I - IX.

But the trailer is dope. The lighting and VFX on the vehicles is insane, especially the Star Destroyers and that up-close TIE shot.

Great review as per usual from the RLM guys. I agree that the Force Awakens wasn't bad, but future entries can't continue to riff off of the original trilogy. I also agree that when Disney is launching the beginning of a multi-billion dollar movie series it makes sense that they would play it safe.

The biggest thing I agree with though is that Star Wars is about to be completely driven into the ground. Being a Star Wars fan with any sense of restraint or taste is going to really make this next 10 plus years hard. Disney gonna Disney though.

Looks very cool to me....much like episode 3, ppl already know the general story. I am interested to see how the story unfolds...

The opening scene of episode 4 (A new hope, the first SW movie ever) has Vader's star destroyer capturing a transport ship that has C-3PO, R2 and Leia amongst others on it. As the ship is drawn in by the tractor beam of Vader's star destroyer, Leia very famously puts the plans into R2 with a plea to Obi-Wan Kenobi (C-3PO and R2 promptly deploy to Tatooine on one of the escape pods; the Empire does not detect life forms in the pod, so they initially let it go). Those plans are the plans that this movie is about. I find that to be uber interesting and cant wait how they tell that story.

semi-spoiler alert, in that its my own theory:
Personally, since there is never any reference to anyone individually that was on the mission to get the plans, I assume they ALL DIE. I also hear that Vader is portrayed in brutal fashion in this movie, and that reinforces the idea of everyone on this mission dying. Other than Rogue One being successful in getting the plans, there isn't much room for a happy Hollywood ending.

ADDED: in Return of the Jedi* when they are all standing around reviewing the mission details to blow up the 2nd Death Star, they bring up the Death Star plans and Mon Mothma says something to effect of, "...a lot of ppl died to bring you this information."

Mon Mothma is also in the Rogue One trailer....giving her the mission.

*(this is also the scene when Luke has his new hand, and Han Solo reveals he is leading part of the assault)

...A Chinese blind force user(?) is a little bit too cheesy for my taste.

its an extension of the same concept that Luke Skywalker does the first time he is on the M. Falcon when Obi-Wan tells him to put the blaster shield down on the pilot helmet....

"...a lot of bothans died to bring you this information."

fify.. Bothans aren't people... and I don't believe any are shown in the trailer... though I wouldn't put it past Disney to completely screw over canon and just make shit up... BUT, like you touched upon, this movie is about the first set of plans anyway, not the ones MM states many Bothans died getting in RotJ...

Bothan | Wookieepedia | Fandom powered by Wikia

It is easily confused and jumbled now though... which leads to another small point, Star Killer, Death Star I & II... it's time to move the fvk on from these huge planet destroying bases already and move to something new (Not to say a story like this fitting into already established canon isn't useful, I just hope they stay away from anything completely new on that tip and honestly they should have never gone Star Killer in the last movie to begin with imo)...

Preliminary thoughts:

As others have pointed out, Rogue One puts the war in Star Wars. It is an action film shoehorned into a larger saga.

The overall pacing made the character development too thin. The Saw Gerrera character and plot line, for example, was almost unnecessary. Cassian's scene on the seedy slum planet was inelegant in providing important background information. Was it ever explained how or why Jyn becomes a prisoner that needs rescuing? The blind jedi monk and his sidekick have so much potential, but they are paper-thin characters in the end. The exposition is just too damn rushed. Maybe that's okay for an action film, but it is not what I expect from a Star Wars movie. Another 15-20 minutes at the front of the movie would have served the plot well, in my opinion, and stifled many of the criticisms.

The last two thirds was fucking fun. As a nerdy kid who spent too many hours playing X-Wing, Tie Fighter, XvT, X-Wing Alliance, etc etc, this movie was a fulfillment of childhood daydreams. And that is why I loved this movie. The battle at Scarif is straight Star Wars porn, therefore my pretentious character and plot criticisms are forgiven and almost forgotten.

Can't wait to see it again Saturday.

P.S. I don't care for gimmicky 3D nonsense, and IMAX 3D was all that was available in my area. But the "3D" usage in Rogue One and The Force Awakens have been tastefully done, IMO. IMAX is the way to go.

Rogue One

There were numerous things that stood out with this release which I loved and some that I am still processing. What are your feelings on:

The obvious direction to present a separate story movie from the Star Wars saga but still set within the Star Wars universe?

No opening crawl?

New intro music?

Jan Ors and Kyle Katarn vs Jyn Erso and Cassian? Is this something we can expect moving forward with other EU characters?

CGI Peter Cushing and Lea?

Dat Vader scene. Holy shit!

Jyn Erso.

CGI Tarkin was insanely amazing. CGI Leia was creepy and weird.

Did anyone else spot Cham Syndulla hanging out on Yavin IV (or maybe it was with Saw Guererra)?

They absolutely NAILED the Vader scene. The way he swings his lightsaber and moves was spot on.

The novel Catalyst should have been required reading prior to this movie. Krennic and Galen Erso had a history going back to their days in a kind of "gifted students" program in the Republic. Krennic saved the Erso's from a CIS prison camp during the Clone Wars. I think those are areas where an opening crawl would have helped the general audience.

I thought the pacing was a bit too fast for the first half of the movie. Did they need to go to so many planets? It felt like I was on a Disney ride or something. It was probably also too perfect at times.

Leia's line about hope was a nice reference to the movie's "Rebellions are built on hope" and a great lead into A New Hope.

The intentional design flaw does a great job of covering for Return of the Jedi's second Death Star. The Empire felt the weapon would be impossible to defeat if they simply fixed that. It still makes TFA's Death Star knock off a joke though.

They tied the movies together brilliantly. Maybe the best Star Wars movie since 1983. I think it'll have more staying power than The Force Awakens.

The one thing I was surprised about is that it seems to offer zero connections to The Force Awakens. I figured there would be some sort of tie in. I thought maybe Lor San Tekka would be in this movie or something like that.

The lack of an opening scroll and typical intro music was a bit surprising and still not sure how I feel about it. I think they did it to set the move apart right from the onset so idk.

I think I was one of the few people in the theater that picked up on some of the Easter eggs. I laughed out loud at the Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan scene and didn't seem like others did.

The Red + Gold Squadrons were so cool to see as well as Blue Squadron.

I think the final scene needed R2 in the background or something to complete the connection. I know they showed R2 and 3PO earlier but to affirmatively show they were with Leia at the time would have been cool. I think it would have actually been awesome to see her recording the message to Obi-Wan and possibly end the movie with CGI Alec Guinness or even McGregor sitting in his little home on Tantoine.

I was also surprised they killed every single new person. I get why it happened but again, I felt like there was some opportunity for tie ins to the sequel to the Force Awakens.

I completely agree on R2 and C-3PO. They probably could have skipped introducing them on Yavin and left it for that scene too.

I like that they didn't show Obi-Wan.

My son and wife both caught the Ponda Baba and Evazan scene. But i didnt see or hear anyone else reacting like we did.

I also thought showing R2 and 3P0 on the corsair would have been better placed.

I'm not saying connect them in some major plot sense...I'm talking about more of an Easter egg. Lor San Tekka was the example I gave earlier. We knew nothing about him coming into TFA and didn't find anything out about him during the opening scene either other than he was somehow important enough to have a map to Luke's location.

I think it would have been cool to give him a minor role in Rogue One that maybe connects him in some way to the Rebellion. That's just an example of what they could have done. He would have been 40-50 years old in Rogue One.

Ahhh gotcha. That makes sense.

My theory going into Rogue One was that Jyn Erso and Rey would be related some how. That would be a cool curveball as I am hoping Rey is not related to Luke Skywalker.

Most theories out there seem to believe that Rey is a Kenobi via Dutchess Satine, possibly through Sabine.

The obvious direction to present a separate story movie from the Star Wars saga but still set within the Star Wars universe?
--very cool ppl who know the saga in detail. Processing how it all fits together was cool.

No opening crawl?
--I was ok with it; it does not dilute the main saga's themes.

New intro music?
--same as above

CGI Peter Cushing?
--I didnt think I was going to be ok with this, but after seeing it, i thought it was good. (little strange tho, lol). Especially liked the 'you may fire when ready' line from him.

CGI Leia?
--I was surprised by this...I liked very much how they tied A New Hope together with this movie.

Dat Vader scene. Holy shit!
-- Exceeded expectation; and going in I was expecting it to be memorable. Loved it.

other nice touches I liked:

--you see why 'red 5' was available for luke

--during the alliance attack when the team leaders were called out (red leader, gold leader, etc) it was the same dudes from ANH $$$.

The Red + Gold Squadrons were so cool to see as well as Blue Squadron.

yeah!

The only problem I had is that I had little connection to the characters at the beginning. No connection to the father, no sense of closeness between the family, no connection with the guy who saved her. A 2 minute scene of them being a happy family would have done wonders.

Glad there was no forced romance. Glad there was finally some suspense because main characters could be killed off.

CGI Leia was creepy. Definite uncanny valley.

Overall, a solid movie.

An observation worth discussion: IMO Jyn is force sensitive. In the scene where the rogue one is trying to achieve passage through the gate at Scariff, Jyn influences the imperials, with the force, to accept the pass code. I don't believe she knows what she's doing. I think this was very subtle, not meant to be overt.

it also mirrors the scene in ROTJ where they are trying to land the stolen shuttle on endor, and Vader notices them.

IDK. I thought about this too. They also had the Blind guy (who I think was force sensitive) on there and she had a kyber crystal on her necklace.
