From what I've heard the new movie doesn't really follow the story lines in the books. I think awhile back, probably around the time the movie was announced, the Lucas execs said something along the lines that the books aren't considered canon. I haven't read any of them, to be honest, but I've read some Wiki pages and summaries though. Definitely some cool story lines they could have used.

I need to do some more research as to what events after Return of the Jedi are still considered to be canon. Because i definitely remember reading somewhere that the whole, Luke ends up turning dark, and Emperor Palpatine shows back up at some point was canon.

I think that Lucas always wanted to let fans and other medias like comics/games/novels do their own thing, he's never been one to intrude. He seems to have maintained that while Star Wars is bigger than just the films, there are three separate worlds: The films, the licensed media, and the fan made content. He was only in charge of the films and tried to keep the continuity in that realm. Now that Disney is in charge of those films, maybe they will incorporate some of the EU stuff, but from what I've heard this new movie will be it's own story entirely. Some elements have and will be used, like Luke, Leia, Han's kids. I'm sure the names will remain the same there. I think, for all intents and purposes, the stories involving those characters will change though.

Here's some info on how they've spoken about "canon" in the past: Canon - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki
They mention here that the books are no longer considered canon:
On April 25, 2014, a StarWars.com press release confirmed that the films of the sequel trilogy would not adhere to the post–Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe,[10] with further comments from LucasBooks Senior Editor Jennifer Heddle confirming that the EU as a whole is no longer considered canon. The EU has been re-termed "Legends," with related publications remaining in print under that banner.

Since then, the only previously published material still considered canon are the six original trilogy/prequel trilogy films and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series and film. Most material published after April 25—such as the Star Wars Rebels TV series and all novels beginning with A New Dawn—is also considered part of the new canon, on account of the creation of the Lucasfilm Story Group, which currently oversees continuity as a whole. Characters under the Legends banner are still available for use as needed, even if events concerning them are no longer canon.

So, as I previously figured, characters from the EU are still available for use, but the stories and events surrounding them from books and other mediums are no longer canon and may be changed in the new trilogy.

So basically, there is "Old Canon," which can still be followed for books, and "new canon," which will need to fit in the universe of the new films (and the old films)?

Yeah, thats one way to look at it.

I just hope that this first new film doesn't constantly shove the cheesy nostalgic one liners in our face for the entire thing.

The way I see it, go with how George described it. The books are like a parallel universe. There will be similar elements that fit in with the movies, but they shouldn't be considered as history. Likewise the movies aren't always going to jive with the books. Appreciate the mediums for what they are: Star Wars based and awesome. I've played dozens of Star Wars computer games and console games going back to TIE Fighter. Even if they're not considered "canon," they're still Star Wars though, and TIE Fighter will always be one of my favorite games regardless.

If Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull taught us anything, they will go back to the well with cheesy, nostalgic one liners.

Is that Mark Hamill doing the trailer narration?

I would say yes, as it's the same quote he used in Return of the Jedi on the bridge with Leia "The force is strong in my family, my father has it, I have it, my sister has it..."

Interesting note though...this isn't the same audio of the quote, it's entirely new. He says "My father has it." Does that mean force ghost Anakin is still around and makes an appearance? Better not be Hayden Christensen

I don't think it's the same, i think it was newly recorded. For one, in RotJ Luke pauses when he says "And my....sister has it," and he looks to Leia to see if she picked up on the line. There's no pause in this trailer quote. Also, I think the other line after that "And you have it too" was not in the original movies, which lead me to believe it's newly recorded.

Alright, I feel like a nerd now.

[EDIT] Ok, going back and watching the scene again, he does say "You have that power too" it happens right before the quote I was talking about, not after, so maybe it was just rearranged:

So, maybe it was pulled from RotJ? I don't know anymore. Obviously they rearranged it a bit, presumably he's talking to his offspring here, which is what made me think it was rerecorded for the movie. You could be right, Acamp.

It's okay, brother. I get all pissed off every time I see Luke's X-34 landspeeder without an orange blob under it or the infamous ghost swap.

[Other than] my God, are some things not sacred?

****in' Lucas! Sebastian Shaw was an acting icon, similar to Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan. Bonehead move.

Shaw was cast in a single scene with Mark Hamill, during the moment aboard Death Star II when Luke Skywalker unmasks his dying father. Since the scene was unquestionably the emotional climax of the film, the casting crew sought an experienced actor for the role.[7]

When Shaw arrived at the set for filming, he ran into his friend Ian McDiarmid, the actor playing Emperor Palpatine. When McDiarmid asked him what he was doing there, Shaw responded, "I don't know, dear boy, I think it's something to do with science-fiction."[19] His presence during the filming was kept secret from all but the minimum cast and crew, and Shaw was contractually obliged not to discuss any film secrets with anyone, even his family. The unmasking scene, directed by Richard Marquand, was filmed in one day and required only a few takes, with no alteration from the original dialogue.

Although Shaw's unmasking scene lasted only two minutes and seven seconds and included just 24 words of dialogue spoken by Shaw,[22] he received more fan mail and autograph requests from Return of the Jedi than he had for any role in the rest of his career. He later reflected that he very much enjoyed his experience filming for Return of the Jedi and expressed particular surprise that an action figure was made of him from the film.

I thought the underlined was always funny. Pretty cool that he received more fan mail for that 2 minute spot than anything else he did in his career.
