2015 Mgoblow vitriol over Petrino pulling a scholly from a kid that was committed

OT - Update to Petrino Story of Rescinding Scholarship Offer | mgoblog

Some of the posts...

"As a parent, I would do everything shy of forbidding my child to attend an SEC school if they were a big time recruit. If it doesn't work out, your scholarship is going to be pulled. Besides, unless you go to Vanderbilt, your degree isn't exactly going to wow anyone (with the possible exception of Florida)."

"For a coach to do that to a commit is absolutely despicable and makes me sick.i hope many coaches take note and do not let him recruit at there school."

"Colburn's coach is understandable furious and has now banned Petrino from recruiting his high school ever again. He thinks others may follow suit.

I hope more coaches do this. A high school coach's job is to protect his kids, and rescinding a scholarship offer is one of the most damaging developments that can happen; especially when you have been committed for awhile and haven't looked at other schools.

Furthermore, this is a way to hold the schmucks of the recruiting world accountable. The best football high schools are a sort of life-line for these coaches; continually pumping out talented prospects. Cut off that life-line and maybe these coaches will change their behavior."

What? A program that hasn't won a consensus national championship since the 40s, and which calls US irrelevant, is being hypocritical? I never saw that coming.

Love it. This needs to be posted on any and every Michigan board.

Update:

Even though Lou had committed to do this for some time, Harbaugh has pulled his offer with little advance warning. No word yet if Lou will be able to pick up any additional offers on such short notice.

Since Michigan is using their camps for evaluation and recruiting, next summer every kid offered there should "commit" to Big Blue and post their commitment with photos of them with their recruiter. Since Michigan is redefining what "commitment" means to them...

The recruits could sign financial aid papers with Michigan, take their OVs, and commit elsewhere two weeks prior to NSD.

No harm intended. It's just business.

Michigan is going to lose a lot of WR's after the 2016 year. They needed to bring a bunch in.

Chesson, Darboh, and De'Mario Jones all graduate. Brian Cole redshirted and was moved to safety. Freddie Canteen split reps at WR and CB last year, good chance he gets flipped to CB permanently, and this is probably Jaron Dukes last year at Michigan, doubt he gets invited back for a 5th year.

That'd leave Drake Harris, Maurice Ways, and Grant Perry as scholarship WR's. Ways is a better blocker than actual WR, and Drake Harris was just healthy as a RS Frosh this year for the first time in like 2+ years. They need the bodies for 2017 and beyond.

Stanford's depth chart is good for comparison for obvious reasons. Last year Stanford carried 4 TEs and 9 WRs.

Michigan, after one more TE commit, will have 7 TEs. After Brian Cole was cut, Michigan has 14 WRs (six in the class of 2016) - much too many. Of the six, they will keep one of Nate Johnson, Keyshawn Young, or Donald Stewart, but will finish this class with six WRs.

The next obvious cuts would be Jaron Dukes, who played in one game last year and Da'Mario Jones, who played in five games at WR and with special teams. Flip Freddie Canteen to CB. Michigan would then have 11 WRs.

Michigan's 2016 class is expected to add: TE (1), DL (2), LB (1), DBs (1-2), K (1). That's 6-7 more recruits. The pressure is coming onto existing roster players.

You either have integrity or you don't. There isn't a separate definition of integrity that applies to college football coaches. It's obvious that Harbaugh is lacking this character trait.

They probably will end up with a really good class, (Texas that is) but anyone Meatchicken loses, is just icing in the fukking cake

From Oversiging thread, Post 800:
Background
Jim Harbaugh is a known commodity from his Stanford days. He's a winner, which he demonstrated this year, turning the team around with minimal contribution from the 2015 class of fourteen. To put it mildly, he is aggressive in recruiting and in his roster management. The transfers started soon after he became head coach, ending in five total with three transfers in. One player retired due to concussions. A sixth player transferred rather than accept a medical scholarship.

2015 Scholarship Count
Michigan had eighty-two scholarship players last year.

Scholarships to Give Out for 2016
Harbaugh used ten satellite camps allegedly for education and skills to bring Michigan to all parts of the country. He racked up twenty-two verbal commitments by the time the season began. Most Michigan sites predicted a class size of 16-20. He then parlayed those commitment counts and Michigan's on-field success to attract higher-ranking recruits, gradually eliminating most of those who committed during the summer. Ten players have "decommitted" so far. He used a pipeline to New Jersey and success in South Florida recruiting paired with national recruits to build a class that could reach over twenty-five scholarships.

Current Class of 2016 (1/27/16)
With twenty-five verbal commitments, Michigan's scholarship count would then be eighty-six now. Michigan has already had ten decommits so far. Only one more is possible from the summer commitment list in addition to those three who are taking visits elsewhere.

Targets/Needs
Harbaugh is not stopping there.
Needs - Michigan is targeting six to seven more recruits - TE (1), DL (2), DB (1-2), LB (1). They are also targeting a Kicker, who has been offered a grayshirt, but he has scholarship offers elswhere. Ten of their targets are considering Michigan among their final choices and have had Official Visits already. Nine targets are scheduled for visits in January.

Michigan among their favorites
247 CBs project that Rashan Gary (DT), Jonathan Jones (LB), Terrence Davis (OG), Keyshawn Young (WR), David Stewart (WR), and Lavert Hill (CB) to Michigan. Two TEs also have Michigan in their favorites with one more TE recruit to visit this weekend. Connor Murphy (DE) also has Michigan in one of his favorites.

Scholarship Counts/Attrition
Adding six more recruits for targeted needs to the current class of twenty-five would put Michigan at ninety-two scholarship players.

Losses - Michigan loses thirteen graduating Seniors and one player has transferred. They have ten redshirt Seniors, though seven of those ten are starters. If the three non-starter potential fifth years are not offered another year, with further needs filled (6-7 more), Michigan will have eighty-nine scholarship players.

So, Michigan's scholarship situation will be dynamic until NSD for the Class of 2016. The large 2016 Class will pressure the current roster players. The Big 10 allows a scholarship count of eighty-eight after NSD. There will be further attrition from current players.

Harbaugh's Michigan should end up leading the nation in "decommits" and raise questions as to how he will reach eighty-five as did Ohio State last year.

Thoughts and opinions are mine. Comments or corrections are welcome.

Dang - Texas may end up with one heck of an ending come NSD.

unfortunately for Tejas players and fans, Charlie Strong will still be the head ball coach come game day.

He's certainly setting up Tom Herman for a loaded roster in 2017 when Herman takes the job after Strong is fired.

Brian Cole was switched to safety awhile back, and he wasn't "cut", the kid is probably one of the top 5 athletes on the entire team. He would've been a RS Fr. in 2016 who was in line to get some play at nickel and safety.

Kid got in Harbaugh's doghouse last year. He's not a cut. This is a blow. He had big-time potential to be a star player. Much like Logan Tulley-Tillman did. Would not surprise me to see either of them be studs at their new schools. Physically both look like what NFL players should at LT and S.

Noted, Tom. Who else has gotten in Harbaugh's doghouse that may be a transfer? (I remember the Kyle Bosch "transfer" last year. Doghouse or clearing room?) Did Cole want to play WR and was looking for that opportunity elsewhere now? Cole committed to Hoke, of course, and was the #1 rated recruit from Michigan last year.

That leaves fourteen scholarship WRs, counting the six who have verbaled. I imagine Harbaugh uses less WRs. Fourteen seems a lot for a Harbaugh offense. I see Dukes and Jones moving on.

I imagine Hawkins could switch to Safety, making thirteen WRs. That would give three Safeties for the class with Jordan Fuller's decision pending.

Bosch wasn't forced out. He basically quit the team when Hoke was the coach, the info never became public as to why, but many people speculated it was due to mental health and alcohol related issues. He tried to come back when Harbaugh was named head coach, but Harbaugh put stipulations on his return, and told him he had to earn his way back. The kid didn't think that was fair so he left.

There is no way anybody will ever convince me that Bosch was "cut", he would've been an improvement over Kalis, who really is just a bad player. I mean for god sakes Bosch actually beat Kalis out when Bosch was a true frosh. He'd have probably been starting over Kalis had he stuck it out.

Cole had moved to safety and was absolutely killing it in bowl practices from what the insiders were saying. Him leaving has nothing to do with being switched from WR. He was a much better high school RB and DB than he was WR. He didn't play as much WR as he did those other positions. Cole leaving has to do with a disciplinary issue. He was one of the best athletes on the entire team with huge potential. Outside of Peppers and Chesson there probably wasn't a better pure athlete than Cole.

I think Hawkins eventually does wind up at safety, and I highly doubt that Michigan lands Fuller. I tend to think he'll wind up a Buckeye.

I knew Bosch had left the team, and returned after Harbaugh was hired. Any kid would know that he had to "earn his way back" and would not be given anything. You are saying he quit Michigan, but that his leave may have had to do with mental health or substance issues??

I'd think a new coach would help a talented player to kick his demons and get back on track in a stable situation with his teammates support and the usual monitoring. Bosch does seem to have transitioned well to West Virginia where he is a starting RG.

Cole leaving gives you an extra scholarship in a tight situation. Who else do you see leaving? Or having medical or disciplinary issues?

Michigan getting to 85 1.0

Michigan getting to 85 1.0

We speculated on this with Ohio State and Alabama last year. This year, Michigan needs to be analyzed.

With twenty-six verbal commitments, Michigan would have ninety-three players on scholarship before recent attrition. Subtract attrition so far (6) - Henry (early entrant) Richardson & Taylor-Douglas (grad transfers) and Ferns, Cole & Green (transfers) - That's eighty-seven.

Ideally, they would like four more commitments to this class (DT (Gary), DE (Murphy), OLB (Jones), and S (Simmons)). That's ninety-one.

Four players are eligible for fifth years but are not starters (Godin, Strobel, Clark, Bars). If none are given fifth years, that's eighty-seven. (including four more additions to the Class of 2016 and without further attrition in current roster players).

With further attrition for transfers for PT or medical, Michigan may have a scholarship for a kicker (Nordin) who now has a greyshirt offer from them - and/or scholarships for fifth year non-starters.

The Class of 2016 would have thirty commitments. Together with the thirteen players remaining from the Class of 2015, the forty-three players would make up more than 50% of Michigan's eighty-five scholarship roster spots.

He's been using meritocracy since Stanford. I can visualize these discussions:

"Look, Jim. I know you want millions more in raises, but our meritocracy here in Stanford shows you really are not contributing much to our educational mission."

"Look, Jim. We've accommodated your quirks because you won games for the 49ers. But meritocracy tells me that your recent performance merits your firing. It's just business."

"Look, Jim. Here at Michigan we're giving you free rein to operate like a business with hiring and firing. Call it meritocracy or whatever. Yeah, I know it's a stretch to apply it to h.s. recruits who don't compete against each other. But we'll give you a golden parachute in the case you are not worthy of merit in the future. Those kids have a fallback school for an education."
