Not to mention, the roster space has to be appealing to some of these RBs, they can see a whole load of linemen in the past 3-4 classes and only 2 RBs they'd have to compete with.

If Michigan loses their coach, they will almost certainly sign a guy who is committed to power football, so Isaac won't have to worry about that.

I'm not sure how badly Kelly wants Isaac anyway. I'm sure we'd take him if the path was clear, but if he'll have to go to battle against the NCAA and USC to make it happen, might not be worth it.

Agreed. Isaac is a great athlete but this is hardly a case of a player who fills a gaping hole in the depth chart or anything like that. I think it would be crazy not to take him if it's just a matter of accepting his interest, especially considering that we definitely have the scholarship to give, but to the extent it will be a drawn out process that will distract the coaching staff from more pressing roster needs I don't know if it's worth it.

How much effort do you think Kelly and/or the core staff would have to put into this though? To me, I think if they want him, they'll go after him.

I mean I doubt Kelly would actually be the one filling out forms and waiting on hold with the ncaa to speak to the next available representative. Isn't that what the AD's office/compliance office/coaching support staff is there to do? How much of a hassle is it for them?

We're making a lot of assumptions here, but let's run with it. Maybe the NCAA isn't inclined to budge on the "100 mile" rule, and since ND is technically 106 miles away, we're on the wrong side of the law here. We might be able to get around that, but it would require putting some political pressure on the NCAA (or USC) via public statements from Kelly and/or Swarbrick.

That kind of politicking can be very high risk. If that's the issue here, Kelly and co. may have decided that Isaac would be nice to have, but not worth the effort.

But, if the only issue is administrative paperwork, bureaucratic phone calls, etc., then I agree that likely wouldn't slow us down at all.

That may be right. I won't presume to know. I guess I was just saying that to whatever extent our our staff, whether coaching, compliance or administrative, has limited resources in terms of man-hours, it may or may not make sense to commit them to getting Ty Isaac. He's a talented athlete, but he doesn't clearly fill any obvious depth-chart need right now. He's an offensive playmaker, but we have some promising young playmakers already (though none quite like Isaac); he has the physical tools to be a successful LB, but he's a project on that side of the ball. But I have no idea whether it will actually be any burden to go after Ty or not. Possibly not. I hope not; I'd love to get him.

I guess what I'm kind of getting at is that I don't see any drawback to going after him (obviously assuming the staff likes and wants him).

I agree with your example above, Whiskey....but Ty has already visited schools or is planning to beyond the 100 mile radius. So I don't think HE has a problem with it.

We're all pretty much in the dark on not only where Ty wants to go, but also what steps it'll take to get there. But assuming things are fairly straightforward as a transfer, I just don't really envision a scenario where the staff wouldn't want to put the time and effort into it. I, personally, don't see anything being too prohibitive for Kelly and Co. to make a run at him. Again, that's assuming they like and want him. For all we know, yeah, they want him...but not so much that even making a few calls or taking up a roster spot is worth it to them.

I mean, doesn't ND have some sham address that Ty can put down within the 100 mile radius a la Ray Tatum? Come on now Kelly... step up your game.

In all seriousness, y'all are crazy if you think Kelly wouldn't take or get someone on his staff to do everything they can to try and get Ty. Unless it's been said that he's against playing D, his position of LB is one of the shallowest no the team. And he'd be one hell of a Will and it's a position of need in this class.

I don't think it's a matter of our athletic department not wanting to put in "time and effort" so much as USC doing just enough to make it difficult for him to come here (not impossible, but more difficult than other reasonable alternatives that aren't on their schedule). Then it's Isaac deciding he doesn't want to go to Notre Dame more badly than he wants to play ball next season, with a side of us not wanting to go to war with an athletic department with which we have a long-term working relationship in order to snag one backup running back.
Transfers are sticky, and even a little resistance can make them far stickier. He may like Notre Dame but it's not like he doesn't have other decent options.

Evidently his visit to Michigan went well enough that he decided to stay the night.

Michigan's future RBs (Green & Isaac) have to be almost 500 pounds put together

We will see him one game...but that concerns me. This dude is a trouble in the fourth. We really need to kick the shit out of Michigan and force them to pass. If Ty is pounding Schmidt backwards Ina close game I will stroke out!

Outside the 100 mile rule so I don't think we will ever play against him if he does in fact end up at UM

Who cares? As I recall, no one here was real high in him, unless he converted to LB.. I would take Bryant and Folston in a heart beat over him.

Seems quite a few care, or are at least interested. I think most would take Bryant and Folston over him, but it doesn't meant the team wouldn't be better with him. Also doesn't mean it doesn't sting a little to see scUM land a stud.

Yeah it also means they have two 5* running backs in that backfield now, although they have the worst offensive line in history.

If we beat Michigan this year (or at least don't lose because of Issac going HAM on us), this is a good thing.

We recruit against Michigan for RBs every year. Their back field just got a bit more stocked with talent.

We're now wide open and can literally guarantee PT as a freshman for any 2015 RBs that sign this year.

Good God - we HAVE to beat Michigan this year. No way I can sit on the final game for years being a loss.

Really hope he has to sit out a year and misses the chance to play us again.

USC-transfer RB Ty Isaac could give Michigan potential three-headed monster | CollegeFootballTalk

Due to standard transfer rules, Isaac will have to sit out the 2014 season in Ann Arbor before being eligible to play again in 2015. All indications to this point have suggested Isaac will hope the NCAA approves an application for a hardship waiver, due to his desire to be playing closer to home with his mother ill. The only problem is the hardship waiver typically is for when a player transfers to a school within 100 miles from home, which is not the case for Isaac and Ann Arbor. However, there are exceptions to the rule, which is more of a guideline. The NCA
