I know the difference between a spread and a read option offense. There was a lot of debate leading up to the NCG whether he was a spread Qb or not and most fell on the side that he wasn't quite there yet. Mainly due to his lack of rushing yards that a QB should have in a spread - not a read option.
In a traditional spread it has nothing to do with the QB running. Because the defense gets spread out the QB will be given lanes to run through but the purpose of the zone read is to utilize the QB's running ability. The purpose of the spread is to do just that, spread out the defense and usually it means getting the ball in space to playmakers that aren't the QB.
