No, but it would be a more impressive win than any potential opponent in the B10 championship anyway.

I dont disagree but then it would be a couple things a) would the conference let them go ooc when they have already decided a conference only season and b) would 6 wins including byu be better than 7 wins including a ccg likely against Northwestern who is only 1 spot behind BYU in current rankings.

im not sure playing a non conference game would help them reach the conference championship

No, but beating an undefeated #8/8/13 BYU vs playing a scrub (scUM or fill in) then a one loss #16/17/14 NW will look better to the committee. At worst, it's a wash.

I'll be honest, I dont think Harbaugh is a bad coach. I dont think he is a great coach, but michigan could do a lot worse. His performance there reminds me a bit of Bo Pelini's at Nebraska, and when they moved on form him after a string of 9/10 win seasons it was a disaster. Sometimes programs and their fan bases need a reality check. Harbaugh has three 10 win seasons in six years, michigan only had one such season in the pervious 8 years before Harbaugh. His Bowl record is concerning, and personally I would ride out next year and see if things improve before extending him but im guessing Harbaugh wouldnt commit to next year without an extention.

Hairball for life!

I agree though, not sure who they'd get that's better.

Given the hate between the BoT and the football program, I have to guess one of the boosters flexed (if the 3 year rumor is true).

Damn. Was hoping they'd hit the panic button

I’m afraid the panic button could net them Matt Campbell or another coach who could actually build Michigan back up instead of it just being a mirage propped up with paper clips and gum. I’ll gladly take @coachjim4UM for several more years because eventually it will all come crashing down and it will crash hard. The longer they commit to him, the closer the program moves into the “also ran” category of washes up blue bloods like Nebraska.

I think Matt Campbell is a mirage propped up by a terrible Big 12 so meh. He might have a higher ceiling but his floor is very low IMO.

This is the correct take

This is the correct take. I'd rather Michigan be perpetually average.

Don't think they'll ever stoop to Nebraska's level. They've still got the recruiting clout that Nebraska doesn't have anymore.

Michigan extending Harbaugh is the textbook definition of "hitting the panic button".

They went all in on the Jimmy Jam Express, and it's off the rails and in a ditch.

Now the scUM boosters are essentially doubling down because they know that giving up on Jim-Jar means that their Bo 2.0 failed.

I have no delusions in thinking Harbaugh is a bad coach, but I do think he's lost his luster, and his spiel has worn on the team.

Maybe they're hoping for a program overhaul a la Brian Kelly, but that's probably not going to happen.

Jimbo is a weird dude, like straight up, weird. I can't imagine many players are willing to buy in to him and his staff given his odd demeanor and 1000 mile stare. Say what you want about Kelly, but he knew things needed to change and he himself was well liked and had a mature statesman-like demeanor that garnered some respect from the players.

J̶a̶m̶e̶s̶ ̶A̶n̶t̶h̶o̶n̶y̶ ̶H̶a̶c̶k̶e̶t̶t̶ Jimmy doesn't really possess that kind of stoic presence and that's a big reason why things imploded in San Fran.

They need to keep their recruiting class together. It makes sense publically to make this known. Behind the scenes UM should lower his buyout as part of the extension and fire him halfway through next season. ;)

Didn’t he only have one year left? I assume his buyout is relatively low right now.

Jim Harbaugh is pretty clearly in the bottom half of coaches in the Big Ten and "extending" him (I would love to see the terms, I'm guessing there is no additional guaranteed money) was likely done because of the economic impact of COVID and not wanting to get into a national coaching search this offseason.

Expect 8 wins or less next year to get Harbaugh fired.

Yes he only has one year remaining so scUM needs to do something to show stability towards recruits. Not surprisingly, Harbaugh doesn’t have an agent & negotiates his own contract so he didn’t have a Jimmy Sexton pushing for a 5 year extension back when scUM almost beat tOSU a few years back.

He may have a balloon at the end of his contract making buyout unfavorable. But doubt it if he is negotiating his own contract. They will give him an extension to keep his recruiting class together. Next year will be much like this one, without Don Brown. It would seem they need to wander in the desert for a few more years

How do you extend a losing coach who makes 8mill a year? Negotiate a massive pay cut? Have the buyout go away sooner?

Really, this whole thing is weird, there's got to be more to this story.

Isn’t it all speculation? I haven’t seen any confirmed claims.

Opening as a 30 point dog to Ohio St

Meatchicken needs to let tOSU know by tomorrow at the latest if they can’t play so they can give the Buckeyes time to schedule another opponent. My preference would be to call up Georgia and set up a game that can give tOSU some competition. I think UGA is scheduled to play Vandy which is a game no one wants to see.

Hasn't the big ten said they're not letting teams do that? Would require a rule change

Yes, but Alvarez has already stated that they may have to re-look at their current rules to ensure tOSU qualifies so I was thinking why not get an OOC team that would be open to playing? BYU & CC were able to schedule a game within three days so there’s proof it can be done on short notice.
