I agree for the most part. It's clear Smith was toxic on many levels. UM's either a complete moron incapable of reasonable decision making or he has very little interest in the off the field development of the young men he coaches. Plenty of evidence suggests the latter is the issue. He should have been terminated, but this clause strikes me as too far reaching and will likely present an issue for coaches going forward as it's becoming increasingly common in their contracts.

The duty exists independent of the contract. The contract gives the University the right to terminate him for cause if he fails that duty.

"Even though I would say Ohio State fans would easily rank among the most sick of fan in college football, slowly, I believe they will bail on him as well. "

The idea that Meyer's wife clearly knew what was going on, but didn't tell Urban (as he claims) is a joke. It's not even remotely plausible. No wife in the world would have that info and not tell her husband. It's more likely that I would get to sleep with Adriana Lima, jam with Jimmy Page, get to drive a Ferrari 488 and not tell my brother than it is that Urb's wife didn't tell him all about her texts with Courtney Smith. If you're gonna lie to us, Urban, at least tell a plausible lie.

Well looks like the NCAA may be dipping their toes into this pool. UT HC Herman was partying with Smith at a Florida strip club and used an OSU credit card. HS coaches may have been there and had their "drinks" paid for.

https://www.si.com/2018/08/28/ohio-state-texas-herman-smith-strip-club

Reading the text, only a blind OSU fan could still believe Shelley Meyer never told Urban. Stay tuned, there has to be more coming out.

OSU may not have grasped just how bad the optics are on all this and how much backlash from virtually every corner they were going to get. Urban's coming across as completely phony and untruthful, and everyone knows that if he was a .600 coach he'd have been fired. OSU jumped through all sorts of ethical and mental hoops to find a way to not fire him. In the past 48 hours I've begun to think that with all the negative press over their decision, they may have to reverse course and fire him after all.

Urban chose the (seemingly false) defense which doesn't violate the letter of his contract. He could have chosen a mea culpa defense and said the cops were already doing their thing so it didn't occur to him that the university had a separate obligation. But that defense of his conduct would give OSU the right to fire him without a buyout.

I think he took that route because he was genuinely concerned about his job. And it puts OSU in the position of paying him tens of millions of dollars if they make him go away.

I agree with he Finebaum take that this is the beginning of the end.

I don't have that much faith in pOSU really giving a shit about anything other than winning. Urban wins B1G and goes to the playoffs - this will be yesterday's news and he will be a hero.

I got to thinking about it, and Urban's transgressions are not much different than JoePa's in the grand scheme of things. Joe was let go for covering up Sandusky's sexual abuse, Urban is keeping his job for covering up Zack Smith's physical abuse. You can get into semantics on which sin was worse (Sandusky's obviously, but physical/mental abuse should be right there), but in the end it's clear that both sides knew what was going on and deliberately swept abuse under the rug to avoid a situation. It's still a travesty that Penn State's punishment was eventually removed and JoePa's wins reinstated, yet we had to forfeit the 2012 season for homework bullshit that was self reported. In any case, when you consider they knew what was done and deliberately lied and tried to cover it up I think the outcome should have been similar and Urban and/or Gene should have been out of there.

It's all kind of amusing when you consider how OSU fans rip into State Penn and JoePa all the time, referring to their fans as a cult and such. Pot calling the kettle black.

Obviously OSU is upset with Herman over his part in this so they are trying to take him down with them. Hopefully this lasts all season for these programs.

So it's true that Herman was a source for McMurphy?

Source for what? Smith's wife obtained a protective order against him, which is public record. She subsequently (or maybe even prior to the order, I don't actually know) spoke at length with McMurphy and even provided him her text messages.

I think that is just misdirection on OSU's side, whether true or not it really doesnt or shouldnt change the narrative. I think during the two week "investigation" they were leaking whatever they could leak to bend and twist the story in their favor.

I should've said alleged part in this. The only thing that Herman and his wife ever confirmed on their end, was that they helped Shelley financially back in 2017. Which he claims was for a separate matter.

Point is, clearly OSU doesn't believe that to be the case. Pretty funny that they'd be so forthcoming with information on a fired coach and coach at another program, when they haven't been as so with their own program.

Probably hoping this will cast a shadow on Austin and take the heat off C-bus.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Zach Smith's mother just unloaded on Urban Meyer in a public spat that's becoming a Facebook spectacle: <a href="https://t.co/WRfVTtq2LP">https://t.co/WRfVTtq2LP</a> <a href="https://t.co/ikMN0KQ4z3">pic.twitter.com/ikMN0KQ4z3</a></p>— 247Sports (@247Sports) <a href="https://twitter.com/247Sports/status/1034860469163581442?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 29, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

What Urban Meyer should have said….. IF he were honest….IF he had integrity…..IF he were truly a Christian….
“Before I am a football coach, before I am an employee of Ohio State University, before anything else I might profess to be, I AM A PERSON. I have known Zach Smith since he was 2 years old. I considered his family a part of mine. We had a relationship that extended beyond the X’s & O’s. And I saw a young man with incredible talent, both on the field coaching and in recruiting, struggling. He was struggling in a toxic marriage and was under intense pressure as he tried to prove himself to the hundreds of people questioning his abilities daily. Zach worked harder than most people in life to prove himself to the critics who said he only got his position on my staff because of his grandfather. NOT TRUE – I hired a young, talented coach that I had mentored and watched excel in the profession. The fact that his grandfather was my mentor was simply a bonus.
I was fully aware that Zach was having personal problems AND very aware that his wife was prone to excessive drama and very erratic in her behavior. Zach didn’t want to bring those problems to work but it was obvious there were serious issues at hand. Anyone who has gone through a serious personal problem and tried to work at a VERY HIGH PRESSURE job can only imagine the struggle. And, as a person and a Christian – I believe in trying to help and that is what I did. You don’t give up on someone, you don’t condemn someone, you don’t destroy someone who you know, in your heart, is a good person. And, we all knew that he did not commit domestic violence – and in fact – believed he was a victim himself of relentless emotional abuse.
Did he act out in inappropriate ways – absolutely. OVER 3 YEARS AGO – and since receiving the help he needed he has not acted out inappropriately and has been on a path of redemption and success.”

That’s what he should have said….but he did not. Most people believe that the university required Urban to say the things he did. I’m just wondering where his mentor was in his thinking. The Earle Bruce I know would be disappointed at best. My father was fiercely loyal – to a fault I will agree – but he would never compromise his integrity by apologizing to someone who has lied and brought so much damage to HER OWN CHILDREN and so many others. He would never bow down to anyone if it meant being dishonest.

So this leaves me right back where I was in 1987 – a place I had worked so hard to get away from – extreme disappointment in people. I will forever be changed – again. Fortunately, I have found a faith that gets me through ALL things and I will be fine – and so will my family – but we will be forever changed.
Think about it – this woman – who we welcomed into our family, supported and accepted – has forever altered the landscape of our lives. So very sad, but most importantly sad for my two beautiful grandchildren. We can only imagine how this will impact them in the future. And I will have to see this woman at the typical events that families gather to celebrate. Graduations. Weddings. Every time we are to gather – there she will be. How do you forgive and move forward, which is what I am to believe is the right thing to do – there is my challenge – AGAIN.
I try not to read all the horrific comments and bullying that has gone on through all of this ordeal. But some slip through and it makes me realize how blessed I am with the support and love we have from the folks who really matter. And how people who have no insight, no knowledge, are so quick to put in their 2 cents. But that has taught me a lesson as well – good and bad.
But I do want to thank the people who have searched for the truth and not simply accepted the tainted reporting and falsehoods that apparently are rampant in the media – both supposed journalistic and social. Don’t ever believe everything you read – it often isn’t even close to factually correct.
Zach Smith is my son. I love him unconditionally and always will. HE IS NOT A WIFE-BEATER. He made mistakes and I don’t condone his behavior, but I understand it. I understand it because I saw what he was living and going through – even though it was from a distance – because his wife had managed to eliminate all of his family support from his life. Typical abuser behavior. And even before she lied and manipulated to remove us, she told me repeatedly that she would do this to us, to Urban and to the university. This was all very calculated and planned – and the trigger was pulled when Zach had finally moved on with his life.
If you have a negative comment or opinion, please keep it to yourself – I really don’t care. I know the truth – YOU DO NOT. Try and question why you feel the need to be a hater and why you feel the need to spew garbage and hate. It really is very sad. If you feel the need to hurt others – might want to look at yourself and figure that out. You aren’t going to hurt me – that’s already been done.
My dad once told me – after he had been fired and I was angry and wanting vengeance – “The best revenge is living a good life”. And that is what I intend to do.

However you slice it UM put a coach and friend ahead of the team (kept a shitty asst coach because he was a friends grandson). Hard to preach to players if you don’t walk the walk. That will come up on the recruiting trail. Will likely sow discord that bites you later. Winning a natty is really hard UM just made it harder for OSU

it's gonna have zero impact on recruiting.
