I would consider it arrogant of me as a fan to think money would want to make him stay when I know full well from first hand experience that for the majority of the guys in this profession that's not what they're all about. As much as I'd love for him to stay at ND as long as he wanted and be successful long term, he's going to succeed and he's going to have opportunities find him. He won't have to seek them out. There could be one, college or NFL, that could prompt him to move. That's the nature of the beast.

Not one for my sports teams to throw money at problems, even if that problem is overcompensating an assistant coach so he doesn't leave.

All of that being said, think back to when he was first hired and how we all felt in that moment. I have to admit I wasn't over the moon about it, but that's because I do what I do 40 hours a week and it isn't this. Really ends up being a fantastic hire by the people who made it. For now I'm going to enjoy watching this defense play next week and not worry about the off the field business. Actual football is actually being played. Not like I'm sitting around waiting for games to end so I can focus on what doesn't really matter: recruiting and the coaching carousel.

The football is why we're here. Not losing sight of that. Al Golden can coach ball. We've got at least 11 more games to see it.

Marcus found a 'Golden' ticket when he hired Al so ND is playing with house money. No one can predict the future and I hope we can keep him for many years to come. Mickens is his understudy and I think that could pay longterm dividends should we have DC turnover in the next 1-3 years. That isn't a guarantee Mickens will be able to create the same magic but he sure as hell knows how to identify, develop and coach the backend.

I'd be fine with Goldon leaving after this season, provided he helps us win a championship. I'd be sad to see him go though.
Of course, that all is null and void if he takes a BVG trip and the defense suddenly starts sucking.

In the last press conference he got asked at least one question to which he gave an answer that had nothing to do with the question. It almost sounded like the press conference had been edited. Hahaha. It’s was kind of funny. He obviously doesn’t like doing press. Legend.

Of the 63 points Notre Dame has given up this season — which ranks No. 8 nationally — more than a third (20 points) have come after Irish turnovers. Of the six giveaways, four have turned into points. The two that didn’t — both against Miami (Ohio) — ended with the Irish making a pick at the goal line in the first quarter after Faison’s fumble and later forcing a three-and-out after Leonard’s 43-yard fumble in the third quarter.

This is an awesome quote with the exception that 20 is not more then a third of 63
I tried to play devil's advocate and make considerations like "Maybe they're not including ST points?" but no...they just screwed up here.

Maybe he looks at that Oklahoma HC disastrous move from defensive guru to HC and decides against a similar path.

Any chance we can convince Bob Hinton to give up the namesake, and rename it the Al Golden Defensive Coordinator moving forward, with the understanding it means Al Golden is signed to a lifetime deal?

It would need to be named the Al Goldon Defensive Coordinator for this to work...

If the defense continues this kind of consistent play, he's going to have options. I don't know what his intent is or if he's looking for something next, but he's going to have interest. There is absolutely zero doubt about it.

I could see him going back to the NFL as a DC. So many bad DCs that I'm almost positive he would be better than them at the next level.
If he did, it wouldn't be about money. Pretty sure he makes more at ND than the average NFL D coordinator makes.

Yep. All you can do is make sure he isn't leaving you because of money. He's arguably the best DC in the country right now. Make him as comfortable as possible and pray that he really likes being DC at ND.

IF he wants to coach again, and IF the rest of the season goes poorly for UVA, and IF Tony Elliott is fired...

...that's pretty much the perfect spot for Golden, short of Happy Valley (where he'd never get the top spot), if he wants to be a head coach again.

The only thing giving me hope is that he's been described as a filmroom/coaching junkie who hates dealing with media, doesn't like making public appearances, and doesn't like recruiting. If that's accurate, I'm not sure why he would desire a return to head coaching beyond raw ambition. DC in the NFL seems a more likely danger because he's spoken so glowingly of the complexity of the game at that level.

It's been rumored here that he likes his place at ND because he's able to coach the D and isn't asked to break his back recruiting. If that's true, I don't see him leaving to become a HC at another P4 program. I think the more realistic departure would be for the NFL.

Really hope we give him whatever he wants/needs to stick around but it might be hard to keep him if the NFL comes calling. If he wants another crack at a HC job, also hard to fault him there.

The NFL conundrum is that one bad year can get him fired. He has cache at ND and would need to build the same at the NFL as a DC in the league. If the pay is even remotely commiserate, which by all indications it is, it would be a bit of a risk to jump. Not saying he wouldn't do it, but at 55, he may view things differently.

To play devil's advocate here, even if he flamed out in the NFL ranks as a DC, there would be no shortage of P4 teams who would hire him as a DC the following season. I think he has a good enough track record in CFB to always land on his feet at this level.

Not doubting that those reports are out there, but the "doesn't like recruiting" stuff all stem from his time at Miami.

I don't think it's so much about an aversion to recruiting per se for Golden, it was recruiting in South Florida - an absolute requirement if you're going to be the HC for the Canes. It's a different beast down here.

I could easily see him being okay with recruiting at a place with UVA, where the pressure wouldn't be nearly as high and the media scrutiny would not be the same as it was in his former stops. Just my two cents, but if that job opens, I think he'd be interested.

Lifetime DC is not an unreal concept (note Bud Foster with Frank Beamer --- Beamer was wise enough to get Foster a big salary and then get out of his way to establish a defense Kingdom within THE Kingdom. Foster never wanted the "Big" job, and loved the limelight of the Defensive Guru ---he got huge national praise. Beamer was a defensive player and defense-minded coach, so he could recognize that Foster was essentially always right. So it was easy to stay out of his planning concepts. Hopefully Freeman can see this in Golden too. ) Let's pray that our great DC is like that. (Foster LOVED Blacksburg also. Let's hope that Golden loves Notre Dame's environment.)
