Bill O'Brien and Kalen DeBoer both did what they did last week, and it was just sort of business as usual. I guess I have come to the conclusion that I personally don't give a shit that some wide receiver might play in three programs in five years. I'm also not really sure how that is going to cause the sport to implode or end up destroyed. It just feels like a bunch of people moving around and doing what they want. Now the college kids are doing it at similar rates that their coaches have been, but everyone takes issue with that. You have anywhere from 500-600 coaches change jobs in FBS every year. This past cycle 30 FBS teams hired new head coaches alone, and many of them are going to be the highest paid state employee where they landed.
Attending multiple schools isn't necessarily what I'd want for my kids, but ultimately everyone has the freedom to choose what they want to do and when they want to do it. This wasn't always the case. It so happens that THIS particular change is the one that has a lot of sports fans anywhere from uneasy to sad to angry. Offseasons can be long. Once autumn rolls around, the actual football actually being played will distract everyone from the off the field chaos that is supposed to be eroding the game.
Think spring.
I agree and would push back that not everyone takes issue w/ athletes program-hopping like the coaches. I have zero issue with it. You were probably generalizing for which I am guilty of doing at times as well so forgive me if that’s the case. My only hope is the kids hopping from program to program have some good resources (parent, mentor, family member, etc) to guide them as I wouldn’t want my kid navigating that track alone.
I appreciate the fact that most of the P4 athletes plan on making an NFL salary one day soon b/c that’s the mindset they need to make it to the next level. But even the most talented can experience a career-ending injury that takes them from a prospect to a suspect. What seems obvious is that there is zero Plan B b/c most sentient adults realize that most of those kids never cash a paycheck from the NFL & those that are fortunate enough to do so, don’t do it long enough to sustain their lifetime.
That’s where I think the portal favors ND. Some, not all; choose ND for both football & the education. Knowing the value of the ND degree, most kids wait until they’re grad-transfers to move on. It can cut both ways but I think it lends itself to stability in the program. Also, notice how many former NFL players’ sons are enrolled or committed to ND? IMO, they realize their sons may not be as fortunate as they were & want their kids to have a Plan B. That’s always been my retort, “Use the school for everything you can milk from them….Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, stipend, NIL, food/clothing, room/board, tutoring, etc”. Use everything at their disposal b/c those schools are damn sure using them. It’s a business.
