It might be me hearing things, but in yesterday's podcast, it sure seemed like Fortuna grew up a ND fan?

I'm glad you said this because that was definitely the indication and I felt like I was crazy. He said that his first memory of ND (and college football in general) was ND smoking Pitt in 2005 and that he was swept up in the Weis storyline immediately and started following college football much closer after that. My read on him was that he was just a journalist who got assigned ND at ESPN and has been making hay off that since then. I had no idea he was a fan and it was surprising to me since he always seemed like one of the more removed reporters who cover the team.

Sampson is a pompous ass too. I hate his smug attitude on his podcasts. Him growing up following MSU and Michigan explains it all.

Hard disagree on Sampson. I love his weird professionalism about ND where he clearly has some affection due to years of knowing people and proximity to it but is always clear that he's a reporter first and foremost. It's nice for me because when Sampson was saying things like "ND is playing with the big boys on recruiting" a couple of years ago I knew he wasn't blowing smoke like a lot of the more "I grew up a fan" reporters can be.

It doesn’t take a professional reporter to tell me that we are recruiting like the big boys. I have eyes and see the classes that they are bring in. Behind the scenes guys are good and John Brice is doing a great job there.

Only problem is JB got a real nice gig with USA Today and that's going spread him more thin with his ND time....but he'll still bring the smoke when he does show up

That's why I said "a couple of years ago." He was telling us about behind the scenes changes to the recruiting org before the machine got up to full speed.

I like Brice too. Those are probably the two best for me. Brice is interesting because of his ability to report how ND is being viewed by his SEC connections. Sampson for the fact that he clearly has really good connections within the admin but he's not just a mouthpiece for the university and he treats his readers like adults. I get that he comes across as an IPA sipping intellectual but it's surprisingly not a niche that exists elsewhere on the beat and I'm glad he's around to be that guy.

One gets the impression Fortuna googles “Notre dame football” 15 minutes before they start recording. It just feels low effort.

I love Sampson - grey hammer nailed the description. Healthy for ND football

That looks more like skilled knife work than a hammer.

some notable points, nothing most here don't know:

- mobility graded lower (for both) obviously
- Needs to show it in big games still/freshman dumb mistakes like rollout stuff
- Sayin better over the middle/more willing to
- Carr elite elite outside the hashes, layered throws
- Sayin possibly more tapped out though, Carr higher NFL traits
- Both different stratosphere than toolsy guys like Arch, Sellers with more tools after 12 starts
- debated if Sayin is too "check down charlie" or not.
- debated who is more hesitant at times/ overall better processor

- McShay has this so far on his rankings
1. Dante
2. Sellers
3. Carr
4. Arch
5. Sayin

I dont see it with Sellers at all. But current Dante above Carr is okay. Ask me after this season

CJ Carr is going to win the Heisman. ND has a soft schedule. They are going to hammer teams and his stats are going to be off the charts. The QB on the #1 team at the end of the season gets the Heisman.

Maybe. I'd just be content with him playing to his potential and go from there. A national championship would mean infinitely more to me than a Heisman.

EDIT:
If the schedule is as bad as it appears to be, the regular season will be a snooze. People will spend half the season mocking Notre Dame for playing Little Sisters of the Poor. Media and voters would (rightly or wrongly) be questioning whether Carr was worthy by loudly asking if he had a Heisman Moment or whatever. He's not Lamar Jackson or Jeremiyah Love either where he's going to do things that physically wow you. He's not that guy.

Between SMU and Miami we can have a transitive ACC championship. Smoking both of them in November has a good chance of delivering wins over #1 and #2 in the conference that produced last year's runner up. BYU will be a top three in their shitty conference.

Only non-P5 schools are Rice and Navy (WTF are we doing playing Navy a week before Miami btw). Anyone bitching about that is probably ignoring the two directional D4 scrimmages "their" team classifies as wins.

It's wild that the media has heavily criticized ND's schedule but said nothing about Miami's. Miami is likely only going to play 1 ranked team (ND) and their additional non-conference games include a directional Michigan school and something called FAMU. ND's schedule isn't great, but they'll likely play 3 ranked teams.

It's NEVER based in reality. It's always emotional. Someday ND is going to win the national championship, and it will literally ruin the lives of a lot of people. It's so bizarre that some people genuinely hate a college football team. And I mean HATE in it's truest form. It's so weird.

Our schedule has been traditionally fine and the criticism has been historically crap, but this past decade with the ACC has largely been weak and the past couple years in particular have been dogwater. Not really our fault that the ACC decided to move backwards in every way but I do not enjoy playing all the fun games in September (if that) and largely sleepwalking through November.

The bottom of the Big 10 and ACC are indistinguishable from the bottom ACC teams imo, and Miami just went to the national championship game. I think the weakness of this schedule is the disadvantage of needing to make scheduling arrangements so far in advance. If this was 2019 Wisconsin or 2021 MSU we wouldn’t be so concerned about our SOS.

Same. Can’t remember who the last player was that I was this excited to see play.
Before Carr? Probably Manti for me. I remember seeing a clip of him preseason his freshman year doing some drills and was amazed how quick and fluid he was.

Schedules never seem to end up being as hard or soft as people expect.
