Whether due to success or failure, if we lose Golden at the end of this season. I agree.

Let’s throw it back to a UC defense and see what Mickens and Freeman can do.

Though I’m sure there are a few names that’ll be available that would be quite attractive as well

I don't know what Mickens would bring as a DC, and maybe he would be amazing. If they do go this route, I think a Co-DC situation would be better.
Just out of curiosity, how many other CB coaches are DC's in major college football?

but....

If Golden leaves, my first choice w/o a doubt is Joe Rossi at the UofM (MN). W/O looking it up, I think he coaches LBs as well.

Mickens will be a DC somewhere within a year or two (assuming he wants to). All things equal I’d rather not lose him but keep Golden and Washington.

I started looking at names that might make sense and the first one I clicked on was Bryan Brown since he's now at Cincy and had a top 10 scoring defense at Louisville last year. Coincidently, a CB/DB coach. So not a realistic option as long as Mickens is here. But if Mickens were to leave for an opportunity elsewhere, he'd probably be up there with the first people I'd call. Louisville was putrid at defense when he took over and he improved it significantly every year.

I like Rossi but I really wonder how much of his success is due to playing Big 10 West offenses and have a ground and pound offense that chews up clock. I’d rather give a shot to a guy who has challenged high powered offenses, rather than one that consistently holds Northwestern and Wisconsin to low scores.

I’d also take a look at other position coaches along with Mickens. Tray Scott from UGA seems like a guy who will be getting DC calls at some point, heck of a recruiter and we’ve seen how dominant that position group has been for them. Also Bobby April from Stanford/Wisconsin and Lemanski Hall from Clemson would make sense as we try to emphasize DLine and edge rushers as a team strength (likely the most important outside of QB for ND’s chances at a NC)

On todays hit&hustle Jamie U broke it down best and called out some people blowing everything out of proportion.
Speaking of breastfeeding.

And if I have to read another "neutral" or Ohio State slanted article about how Chicago is in Notre Dame's "backyard" I'll probably need to be hospitalized for excessive vomiting.

Now the Ohio State POVs about how this burns Michigan? Glorious.

I will have to listen later. But lately I have been finding the level of his dismissiveness and indignation towards upset Irish fans to be gross and stupid. If not for pissed off over involved fans no one would pay for your website and you wouldn’t have a job.

Cool. I’ve been meaning to check out that podcast.

I said it before — it isn’t the end of the world. I remember losing my shit when Joe McKnight (RIP) — despite John Curtis notoriously known for sending kids elsewhere — picked USC over LSU. At the end of the day, he wasn’t the next Reggie Bush as most thought, and it really didn’t hurt us at all.

Scott maybe the same for ND. He may end up being a flake or not being worth a shit. However, you’re not going to be batting 1,000, but just like Mylan Graham (New Haven) and Ian Moore (New Palestine), you’d like to be locking in some of these guys in your backyard here and there.

Cam Williams is also from Chicago. Tae Johnson is from Fort Wayne. I'd suspect being close but not TOO close helped us with Carr. Last year we got Drayk Bowen out of The Region. Etc.

Now that the sting of loses Scott is gone, I agree ND should keep recruiting him. He could easy change his mind. I reckon OSU has mishandled their current DL’men.

I listened to the Irish Illustrated podcast yesterday and they said that ND will need to get a solid grad transfer at DT in both 2024 and 2025 to cover up for not bringing in Justin Scott or a player of the same caliber. My guess is they'll have to do the same thing at Safety to make up for O'Leary's recruiting.
It’s cool to have assistants who can’t recruit.

And this is why I don’t listen to the podcasts. If Justin Scott was a meaningful part of the two deep next year, we’re screwed and getting a grad transfer anyways.

I thought it was odd when they had that transfer conversation. All through this recruitment those three guys have consistently said that it was an important recruitment but that Scott was not going to be an instant impact player.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the question about '25? Which would make more sense. You don't expect a freshman to contribute, but a 5 star sophomore probably is expected to at least be in the rotation.

EDIT: I just listened to it again and O'Malley said "I think they turn to a grad transfer in 2024, that bridges a gap. You probably do it again in 2025."

I really get the impression none of these guys know what they're talking about but they get taken at their word and when things go in the opposite direction they said it would, the chaotic bed wetting and hand wringing begins on message boards.

The other day a poster bumped Loghan Thomas's "In the Film Room" thread to ask Prister how big he thought Thomas would get at ND.

Prister's response, leave ND 230-240.

Of course, that elicits a certain response from the board. Our Vypers can't be 235 lbs., lol. No, they are right. They can't be. In fact, none of them are or have been.

Julian Okwara left ND at 248 and Foskey 265. Both similar sizes to Thomas at the same stages. JR and Burnham, both former off ball LB's play the position over 245 and they are Sophomores.

Just total non-sense and drivel.

Foskey was kind of an outlier as a Vyper. In theory the player at that position is a Linebacker rather than a DE. Botelho, Burnham, Junior etc are the body types

Foskey was a prototype for the original Vyper position just like Okwara was before him.

I would agree that the Freeman and Golden have somewhat reimagined the position. Yet, every single one of those guys plays over 245. So, the point still stands. Prister just making shit up.
