Manning started, what, two or three games last year? Put up pretty good numbers (granted against G5s and Mississippi State). And then I suspect when coaches get pretty heavily invested in a player, they want to see that pay off, and believe they can be the guy to make it happen. It's human nature.
Besides it sort of feels like Ewers had run his course at Texas. The fact that he didn't transfer suggests he was probably ready to try his hand at the pros. Good luck to him.
As for Manning, I'd bet he turns into a fine college quarterback. But the #1 pick talk was always nonsense.

It’s too early to make a call on him just yet. He played against a really good defense last week, so not surprising he didn’t light it up. We should revisit this thread at the end of the season.

Sark inherited Jake Locker first and then developed a 3 year starter Price who only played in the CFL when he was at Washington. At USC he then again inherited Cody Kessler. At Alabama he then again inherited Tua Tagovailoa. Now at Texas he firsts inherits Casey Thompson and then the #1 overall recruit Quinn Ewers becomes a 7th RD pick

Before Ewers he had developed exactly one NFL prospect at QB since Mark Sanchez and that was Mac Jones for a COVID season.

He’s very good at play design but basically any QB he’s ever touched is very systematic in college before busting in the NFL.

There’s a decent chance Arch Manning has been stunted on his possible growth.

As someone who has had 6 shoulder surgeries and diagnosed with arthritis in both shoulders by the age of 30, I really hope he gets whatever is bothering him taken care of. It's easy to want to play thru pain when you're a competitor, but he has to learn to listen to his body and avoid any long term damage.

Side note: seeing some of these other guys week to week, I appreciate how Marcus Freeman handles the media compared to some of these other guys. Hopefully Marcus doesn't get too jaded over time. I know he's still young.

On one hand that's a dickhead response to a totally reasonable question that lots of people are wondering about. On the other he's probably under so much pressure around Arch Manning he just wishes the kid had gone elsewhere.

Yeah, I didn't get the analogy at all.

It could have been answered in a completely different manner and tone. Very simple. He doesn't have any shoulder issues. The end.

We have to assume it is pressure that he brought on himself unless higher powers than him forced Arch Manning's recruiting and signature onto him. Feels like Sark was in lock step with everyone getting Manning into his program every step of the way. He bought it, he owns it. Quite literally.

For sure, though that doesn't mean he can't regret it.

Though also, Texas is one of those programs that - at least under Mack Brown - was sort of notorious for big boosters trying to call shots. You could definitely see someone(s) deciding they were going to buy the best-pedigreed quarterback recruit ever and foisting him upon a coach who might have personally preferred someone with less baggage and scrutiny.

Sadly I think Riley was way worse and against lower level competition. He did play hurt most of the game though. Only 4 of these passes were good to very good. Most of his completions were easy AF. If Angeli is playing for Texas they run away with this game.

I would love to know the behind the scenes stuff that went into his recruitment. It would be very difficult for a coach to say "no i don't want a manning kid on my team"
