Honest question, would people rather have Schrauth or Craig? I know this isn't a either/or situation. But while I really like the guys ND has commits from, I could see how people might view OL similarly to the RB situation. All of them could develop into elite players, worthy of NFL draft picks. But when you compare versus the guys heavily recruited and missed out on, the players ND didn't get may have an ever better shot at becoming NFL draft picks. Personally, I think the class as it stands now is moving the program closer to where they want to be. But the pace of the movement could be accelerated with guys like Billy.

No contest, Schrauth. This is a pretty solid L for Quinn. Not being able to close on a prospect that gave every indication that he was coming for months. Who also happens to come from a very pro ND family.

I was previously commenting on the importance of this commitment. But, there is a place for this somewhere between “no big deal” and “this is a complete failure, we should fire Quinn”.

Ty Chan is a freak athlete for his size and no one seems to see that. He is better than Tanona IMO.

Him and Gobaira are the two most underrated players in the class, but Gobaira is starting to get noticed by some places. People who have seen Ty Chan in person think he's going to be an absolute star.

On Schrauth -- he and his dad were ND fans. I heard his mom and some other parties have been pushing Wisconsin. I'll let you all read between the lines, and there is some context/history that is probably easy enough to Google if you're so inclined. Sometimes things are bigger than football. Not saying anything else until he has actually signed somewhere.

Re: Quinn... he absolutely did get neg recruited here. But they did it smearing him to people who are too stupid to know better. It's truly some of the dumbest neg recruiting ever to have worked, and that's saying something. I guess when you're a third tier regional program you will do anything and everything to keep your home grown talent in state. Hope ND beats their ass by a million this fall.

I hate the idea of negative recruiting, but schools like Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota will do anything to keep their kids in-state.

Imagine how frustrating it is to see pics of a kid wearing Badger gear all his life, and then have him blush as soon as ND, OSU, etc. start giving him the eye.

Is it his mom or his step-mom?

"My dad is a big Notre Dame fan. Everyday he goes to work, he wears a Notre Dame cap,” said Schrauth. “It was his mom's dream for him to go to Notre Dame. It's kind of the same for him too. We're a big Catholic family. It means a lot, overall. We know how great of a place it is academically, spiritually and athletically. It's a special place."

“In April, Coach Quinn got me, my dad and my step-mom on the phone, and told us he liked the way I played and that I would be a good fit for the program,” he continued. “We were all just super excited.”

Adding this OL class to last years haul is definitely reaching the bar. I don't think it moves it forward but we got some big time OL prospects last class. 3 guaranteed 3 year starters and two others who offer serious upside.

Now add to that this three man haul with a potential Wagner addition and our OL has a ton of upside moving forward.

Driskell is adamant that he knows OL coaching better than Quinn. I disagree given their respective positions and the fact that Quinn was an injury or two away from winning the Joe Moore award last year with his 5 guys. Now, we're going to take a step back from last year but I'm hopeful Quinn can do it again. His recruiting nearly matches Hiestand perfectly and the more guys we put in the league, the more that will continue.

I love what we have, I think Quinn needs to add one more developmental prospect to this class or there'll be more pressure on getting some early contributors in '23

The rumor floating around the BGI board a while back came from someone at Billy's school. Is that Billy has always been very open about how he was going to Wisconsin. He was always telling everyone at school, that would ask, that he was going to Wisconsin. And, that he has a girl that is going to Wisconsin and that was playing a role in this.

However, we know from ND's beat writers, that in conversations with the staff, Billy and his father would talk so confidently about ND's status in his recruitment that they felt at different times he was going to commit or that he gave a silent commit and they were just waiting for him to go public.

so do you think it is bad intel, a McGregor situation, or a kid being legitimately pulled in two directions?

Could be pulled in two directions. Could mom want Wiscy out of spite to her ex? I have no clue what their relationship is, but we've seen enough to know that some ex's will carry a grudge to their grave.

An offensive line recruit that lives in Wisconsin is going to Wisconsin.

It's got a water is wet kind of vibe for me seeing as how that's usually how it goes, right? Please don't tell me he attends a Cahtolic school. This isn't the 1950s. Wisconsin OL that Wisconsin want typically sign with Wisconsin.

Go get the next guy.

Driskell is an asshole. There is a reason why he isn't coaching foootball right now and probably never will again. Blowhard douce canoe that would lambaste his own Twitter followers for asking him questions. Jerkweed of the utmost degree.

And, in retrospect, I think this is where the shortcomings of this OL class are stemming from. We put 3 Wisconsin OL at the top of our board. With ND's past OL recruiting, it wouldn't be all that surprising if we had landed 1 or 2 but looking back it's not all that surprising that we didn't land any. So, I think as far as a plan goes, in hindsight we can find the faults but in the beginning it certainly didn't feel that way.

This is glorious.

For me, my bigger question is how does the last 1 or 2 spots on the OL get filled, if at all? Expand the board? Flip? Stay steady? Very curious since I have heard ND may take up to 5 OL this class.

I believe Rice and Wagner is all that's left currently. Rice is a long shot and Wagner is like 260 pounds and got next'd by Ohio State.

Jake Taylor was also at the top of the board but became a Sooner.

They might just try to get Wagner or try to find another Craig this fall.

Where do you put our chances on Rice and Wagner at this point? As a non-insider, I'm not super optimistic about either. I feel like we have more of a shot with Wagner between the two.

They could fill it a number of different ways or just sign three. Don't forget the transfer portal is also afforded to them. I'm sure there are some good OL who would come as grad students from Duke, Stanford, etc. Hell, they got a kid from Marshall.

I like the three kids they have verballed in this class. If you're going to pursue OL who are behind the Cheddar Curtain and Wisconsin wants them, you should expect that in all likelihood you're going to lose those battles. Their current roster has 13 OL on it from in state. 2 from Michigan and 1 each from Illinois, PA and Minnesota.

Wagner was not "next'd" by OSU. They pushed hard for a commitment during his visit to Columbus and have pushed since. His timeline simply hasn't fit with what they had hoped and they didn't want to get caught with their dick in their hand. Fortunately, when you recruit at their level, you don't have to do that. They took a commitment from George Fitzpatrick (who would've been Irish a year ago, had they pushed), and now they're big game hunting. Anyone here rather have Fitz than Wagner? Not me. Concerned that a HS junior is only 260 lbs? Refresh me on how big Joe Alt was at that time in his recruitment. There's zero concern with Wagner after seeing his frame in person.

I guess I don't really understand the sentiment about this OL class being a failure. People sleeping on Chan because he plays in MA? He's a top of the board talent with an elite ceiling. Sleeping on Tanona because he's a local boy? Dude was a take that early in the cycle for a reason. One of the best IOL prospects in this class.

Not sure if you followed this recruitment from the beginning but everyone on both sides thought this was one of those Eichenberg / Kraemer situations.

As much as I like the guy, it's like you said... go get the next guy.

I've been told by someone who I respect and hits the nail on the head a lot, that this isn't a case of a Wisconsin kid signing with Wisconsin because he's from Wisconsin.

It's not. It's also not a top of the line secret as to why he's not leaving the state. Brunner and Hintzman weren't leaving the state, but being from Wisconsin is not why Scrauth isn't leaving.

I don't think a 4th or 5th is needed but I would take a 4th guy if they can find one that's in the mold of Alt. A high upside guy that might need some time. Maybe similarly to Alt, he doesn't end up needed as much time as thought, lol. So, Wagner is the perfect guy. But, even if they miss there, I'd still keep an eye on Senior film.

With the staff feeling incredibly confident that they hit on 3 of the 5 from last cycle. Plus, Coogan/Johnson hardly look like leftovers. I don't think another large class in necessary but I'd still add one if he's out there.

With Carmody making a push here in Fall Camp, they gotta feel really good about the future of OT, right about now. I mean, Fisher, Carmody, Alt, and Baker seem like quite the four some for next year and beyond.

Jeff Quinn offered 22 prospects this cycle. Of those, 20 of them are 4-5* guys. Out of the top 50 OLinemen only a small handful might’ve had the grades and things ND was looking for and they didn’t offer (Addison Nichols and Fisher Anderson had Ivy offers). Outside of that, Quinn really turns over every stone on every cycle and goes after every dude he can. If he could he’d try and get 50 OV’s for his OLine room so he could get every top dude on campus and again for unofficials as well. Analysts rave about him being great about moving early on kids. Evidence also shows he won’t shy away from a fight (see Wisconsin kids) and try to pull off an upset. At the end of the day maybe there’s a few salesman out there that could close on an additional guy but dangit Quinn really makes me excited every cycle because he’s always chasing the very best and trying everything to stack his OLine room. I mentioned in a post a few weeks back that Quinn managed to get almost all of his top 2023 prospects on campus this summer when visits were allowed again. I know people will be frustrated losing out on Schrauth and some others but Quinn took his shots this cycle and could come away with Wagner, Tanona, Chan, and Craig which could end as a top 5 OLine class in the country. The last 3 cycles there aren’t many teams who have a better overall OLine recruiting class than ND over those 3 years!
