Marcus needs to understand that people need validation that Angeli is better than Pyne and they know more than the coaching staff.

I want to see him hand off in garbage time and throw a 4 yard out so I can talk about how wonderful his footwork is compared to Pyne.

If Pyne gets hurt, yes.
He only burns a year of eligibility if he plays in both USC and the bowl game. If Pyne gets hurt then I would (personally) prefer Angeli gets to actually run an offense for a couple of series in a blowout before taking the field against USC.

What seems kind of weird to me is that if Angeli isn't better than Pyne right now, odds are that he'll not emerge as the number 1 of next year's QB battle with Buchner, Minchey, and X transfer. He could redshirt next year. Pyne is tiny, it's a minor miracle he hasn't gotten hurt yet. It was pretty clear that they were trying to preserve the redshirt when he wasn't getting garbage time in the few opportunities we had to do so. So this has been their plan for some time. If Pyne goes down at this point, it'll either be against USC or in the bowl and that's just not the ideal time to have your very first drive.

Honestly, I just don’t think some garbage time snaps against navy or in a snowstorm would help the guy at all if he has to play in one of these last two games. He’s either going to be a deer in headlights or he isn’t. Those few snaps wouldn’t be changing that.

It could have been promised to him/his family by the staff.
That would make sense.
Angeli probably knows his odds of being Notre Dame's long-term QB1 are fairly low, so keep a year of eligibility in his back pocket for a potential future transfer. It's worth more to him than a few handoffs in a blowout.

Not sure I understand that. I don’t think the staff is in the business of doing things they don’t want to do.
Well, at first I thought their stated reason wasn't their real reason.

In order for sitting Angeli against BC to make any difference for ND all of the following conditions must be met:

Drew Pyne gets injured against USC requiring Angeli to play; AND
Drew Pyne is injured for the bowl game requiring Angeli to play; AND
Due to injuries or ineffectiveness of others, Angelis is needed for 5+ games in 2023; AND
Angeli plays in 5+ games in 2024; AND
Angeli plays in 5+ games in 2025; AND
ND would like Angeli to return for a 5th year; AND
Angeli is good enough to play that much each year but not good enough for the NFL

I think that's an incredibly narrow path.

Other reasons you might not want to play him against BC might be:

1) He only has a limited part of the playbook that's game ready and you don't want to put any of that on tape.
2) Throwing the football in bad weather conditions creates a risk that he does poorly which can lead to negative outcomes if he needs to take the field.

The reason to play him is to avoid a situation where his first college pass attempts are on the road against the #5 team in the country who is ND's arch rival. Letting him run a couple of full series against BC allows him to maybe get some of those jitters out.

But from the sound of it, ND decided on their redshirt plan without thinking too hard about their options.

Is usc really the #5 team though? We’ll find out next weekend. I personally don’t believe so.

Lost in all the talk about Buch and Pyne is Loy’s note in Angeli. Apparently the expectation is to get him some run in the bowl game. Showing big time arm potential.
Singer said he got all the first team reps at practice

Steve's handoffs would be too high for the RBs to adjust to midgame
He'll never make it at ND, he's too tall. Seriously, I don't know too much about SA, but he gets the same love that Buchner and nearly every new highly regarded and recruited QB gets at ND. The next guy in is always the hero, until he isn't.
