Brice Marich, UM 247 Insider, put in a CB for ND.

It did seem like things were trending quickly for ND here and the top 15 was a curveball so this is a good sign. A UM Insider/holdout conceding that he continues to hear ND. Hopefully we can get him soon.

Sounds like Joseph, as much or more than Mickens, made this happen.

Loy - Irish Illustrated told Fighting Irish fans cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens was a good hire for both on-field work as well as recruiting, and it looks like that continues to prove true. With that said, Notre Dame has landed a commitment from Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard three-star cornerback Ryan Barnes, one of the most coveted defensive backs in the entire country and class of 2021.

The 6-2, 180-pounder held over 30 scholarship offers from the likes of Michigan, Clemson, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, USC and many others before eventually committing to the Fighting Irish. Mickens is credited as the lead recruiter here, as he targeted Barnes very quickly upon his arrival in South Bend as the new cornerbacks coach. Safeties coach Terry Joseph is listed as the secondary recruiter, as both him and Barnes developed a strong connection that started before the rising senior even landed an offer from Notre Dame.

"I received a message from coach Joseph. He asked me to call him. I called him and he let me know that I had a scholarship offer from Notre Dame,” said Barnes in a previous story with Irish Illustrated, as he thought back to the moment he was offered by the Fighting Irish. “My family and I were ecstatic about that. I grew up watching Notre Dame on TV and I have been to campus a lot, especially visiting my grandparents who live about 40 minutes from the school. Just growing up and being a fan, it was definitely something we were all excited about. It was an amazing conversation in that moment. We were all very excited to have the opportunity to go there if that's where I choose to go."

This duo played a big role in eventually landed Barnes’ commitment. The staff worked extremely hard to make sure the priority target landed in South Bend. There was a relentless pursuit and it eventually paid off.

"He's a great guy," said Barnes of Joseph. "I always enjoy getting on the phone with him. He's very transparent and direct, which me and my family love in this recruitment process. There's no sugarcoating. He's always straightforward. We all really appreciate that. We love him. He's a great guy. Getting on the phone with him, it's always fun.

"I've talked to him a few times," added Barnes of Mickens. "Like Joseph, the transparency aspect of him and how he recruits me and my family, he's trying to get us all on board. He's done a great job with me and my family. He's someone that we could see me playing for.”

Barnes is listed as a cornerback. However, his combination of length, speed and explosiveness will allow for him to play all over the secondary. For Notre Dame, that is how the staff is recruiting him.

"Coach Joseph said he is recruiting me as a defensive back. He said they would figure out position stuff when I get there,” said Barnes. “As of now, they look at me as a defensive back right now.”

Per 247Sports, Barnes is a high three-star prospect with an 88 rating. He’s listed as the No. 34 cornerback nationally and No. 16 prospect in Maryland from the 2021 class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings list him as the No. 43 talent at his position and No. 19 recruit in his home state this cycle.

Barnes is actually the second cornerback Mickens has landed this cycle since his arrival at Notre Dame. Valrico (Fla.) Bloomingdale four-star cornerback Philip Riley committed to Notre Dame back on May 5. This is tremendous duo headed to South Bend.

Engles - Notre Dame’s recent recruiting classes have included defensive backs who are projectable at multiple secondary spots.

The Fighting Irish’s staff likes to find players who have the skills to stick at the Power Five level and determine their exact position later.

Their 2021 class now has the latest example in Ryan Barnes, a three-star recruit who became their 11th commitment Saturday morning. Ranked as a cornerback – his primary position at Gaithersberg (Md.) Quince Orchard – he’s easy to envision sticking there at Notre Dame or moving to safety.

For Barnes, that was part of Notre Dame’s appeal.

“It’s not being confined to one position,” Barnes said. “They’re looking at me as a DB … I can find out what’s going to help me be the best I can and help the team, either at safety or corner.”

Barnes is the third defensive back in the class, joining four-star cornerback Philip Riley and three-star safety Justin Walters. The former is a natural cover corner who projects to stay there. Walters is a pure safety. Barnes, then, will fill in whatever spot is needed, and an opportunity to play early on could follow.

The perceived snug fit combined with the appeal of the university itself launched Notre Dame atop Barnes’ list not long after he earned the offer in March.

“They offer everything I’m looking for in a school with the athletics and academics,” Barnes said. “They have a great network with the alumni base. Just everything me and my family have discussed and have thought about what I wanted a school to have, they check all the boxes.

“I’m going to be developed as a player as a person in my entire time there.”

Barnes developed that comfort despite not visiting Notre Dame as a recruit. He has extended family near South Bend, which has taken him through the area and allowed him to see campus in person before. Unofficial class recruiter Blake Fisher and other commits, though, were also constant presence in his recruitment who he got to know well.

“They really do have interest in me and want me at their school,” Barnes said. “Just that feeling of being wanted and the connection I’ve built with them, that played a big role.”

Barnes is Rivals’ No. 55 cornerback in the 2021 class. He’s the third player to commit without taking a visit as a recruit, joining Riley and Warwick (R.I) Bishop Hendricken defensive end Jason Onye.

Do we know how aggressively the other schools were pushing for him? Not to be a Debbie downer but while Hamilton is one possibility on why a low ranked kid has great offers, Parker Boudreaux is the other end of the spectrum.

Not sure what this means. Boudreaux has had a pretty good run at UCF up to this point.

My understanding was that Boudreaux was considered a bit of an offer chaser, so his list might have overplayed schools' actual interest in him. I have no idea if that applies to Barnes or not of course, just throwing it out there that the offer list isn't the end all be all.

I'm assuming with his measurables, we're looking at yet another boundary CB (if not safety) here? Do we plan to recruit field CBs again, orrrrr....nah?

Yea, Boundary CB or FS here. Riley is a field CB but could play both. And of guys currently on the roster, Bracy has another year after this. With Rutherford behind him and probably Lewis as well. Though, we don’t know for certain who from last class will play the field role. Undoubtedly somebody will.

I see it as:

Field:
Crawford (or nickel or safety)
Bracy
Wallace (or nickel)
Lewis

Boundary:
McCloud
Hart (or safety)
Henderson (or safety)
Offord
Barnes (or safety)

Either:
Rutherford
Riley

So I think there is a lot of flexibility there.

Welcome to Notre Dame Ryan!

Huge get! This kid could be like a Kyle Hamilton. Began a 3 star, when in reality he is a near 5 star. If there were camps this spring Ryan would be a 4 star top 250 kid by now.

I think he already received a bump from somewhere following his commitment, he was but is no longer our lowest ranked commit in the composite so he moved up about 50 spots. Still just #511.

The only thing holding him back from being a high 4* imo is his top end speed. I see him being a top 200 player when it's all said and done. Huge pickup nonetheless. Stay after Wright and Tucker and we could be looking at a hell of a haul.

I love this get. I am thinking he ends up as a Safety, taking over for Hamilton in 2022.

And now that he's Irish, he'll go down in the rankings.
