I would love for him to backup Hamilton and take over his role when he leaves for the draft. But if he stays at corner and contributes there that probably will help the team more immediately.

I don't know this but I have to think one of the big goals of Spring Camp (both are EE's) will be to see if either Riley, Barnes, or both can compete at Boundary CB.

With that said, and it's just my opinion, but I think in the end Barnes fits that Cover 1 S role extremely well and Riley has the physicality to compete at Boundary CB right away. That gives Barnes 3 full camps to learn that role behind either Hamilton or Brown, depending on who plays there, and be ready for 22'.

He EE’d in 2021 so that’s 6 full semesters plus summers, if I remember right ND has all football players on a 3 year graduation track so assuming he took care of what he needed to in the classroom he should be a grad transfer with 2 years eligibility.

Unfortunately, everyone can’t be star player. He has been good depth for the room if ever called upon. And was never a headache.

Good luck on the rest of your career young man!

Oddly enough, former ND CB Noah Boykin just exhausted his eligibility at UMASS. Boykin out, Barnes in. The ND pipeline to UMASS continues!

How did Boykin’s career turn out?

He had trouble staying healthy, only playing in 27 games in four seasons. He was a starter his first season eligible to play for UMASS, but looks like he lost his job after succumbing to an injury in 2020 after four games.

I say this as a proud resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: I don't really know what the point of UMass football is. No knock on the players. They're working hard. And I'm glad it has provided a landing spot for ND guys going back to Charley Molnar. But there's really no reason for it to exist as an FBS program.

Are they still football independent?

Yep. They mostly play a mishmash of MAC and Sun Belt and, like Army and UConn, with a couple of FCS teams from New England and some couple of paycheck games against big programs mixed in. Penn State beat them 63-0 this year.
At least they've stopped scheduling home games at Gillette. That was not just embarrassing but also a long road trip for their students.
