Tyler Buchner is in town for the second time as well and he already has an offer. I imagine they want to see how things are with him before they offer anyone else who might commit before Buchner is ready to decide. That said, I wouldn't be upset if McCarthy got an offer but Buchner seems like he's at the top of the '21 QB board.

This sounds like a recruiting disaster waiting to happen and something Notre Dame falls for almost every cycle.

"Hey, we should wait things out for a Cali kid thats in USC's backyard instead of pursuing a kid thats probably just as good and is in our own backyard". Notre Dame has fallen victim to this time and time again; lets not mess up something that is potentially great here.

I'm not saying this is going to happen with Buchner, but I wouldn't let this prevent us from getting a different potential 5 star QB.

Agreed. Identify a handful of guys you think could succeed in your program and recruit them equally. No need to go just all in on one (Buchner) when other talented guys are interested in you (JJ)

Something here to remember is Buchner grew up in Chicago and was committed to Michigan LAX so the thought of going to school in South Bend isn't the typical stretch as most Cali QB's might be.

That said, offer JJ now.

Was told he wouldn't be at ND today btw which would be troubling with Buchner and Rubley visiting. 247 is still showing he's visiting however.

ND isn’t offering, at least not until the new year. He’ll visit OSU next week. Hope ND doesn’t get too far behind in the meantime.

Is JJ going today? Conflicting reports out there

Any chance Michael Love ends up a PWO at ND for a year?

JJ is not at ND today.

Michael is super confused and he loves ND so there’s always a chance but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Some really disappointing power 5’s in terms of Michael’s recruitment, especially the local ones.

Just asked someone in recruiting and was told JJ is not here yet but is on the list of expected recruits. Whether he changed plans and it wasn’t updated I do not know and that may be leading to the confusion.

Played in IL 7A state championship Saturday. Looks good, live arm, would love to add him. My dad knows his dad, I guess he said if he gets a Stanford offer that might be it. Tifwiw

Seems like ND wants to play the long game here. They offered the early achievers in the class and then McCarthy hits his growth spurt and goes for over 3000+ yds and 36 tD's. He looks so poised too in his film and makes crazy throws for HS-er with just a flick of the wrist.

McCarthy's problem is Tyler Buchner hit puberty first.

And if ND & Stanford offered the same day, I'd like ND's chances until Naz2002 says otherwise.

JJ broke his thumb on his throwing hand Wednesday. He played in the state championship 3 days later. Today he had surgery with multiple pins put in. He was a warrior. He said he promised the Seniors a championship and he wasn’t going to miss it for anything.

Here’s the thing with JJ and his father. They are very grounded and smart people, they understand the game. He wishes ND had offered but they said they were going to reevaluate after the first of the year. JJ can accept that, he also understands that Stanford doesn’t offer much early. I think this probably shapes up to be a ND/Stanford battle, unless someone can truly sell the academic side of things to him and his family. If Stanford offers before ND that may be a big problem. JJ has had a much longer and better relationship with ND to this point. I think loyalty is a big factor, it may be hard to explain why Stanford would have offered first.

Here’s JJ’s season stats:
- IHSA 7A State Champion
- 13 Wins 1 Loss
- 37 TDS Passing, 2 TDS Rushing
- 3,448 Yards
- 182/240.. 76% Completion Percentage
- 4 Interceptions

And his highlight tape: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/9356262/5bcc996a57984f0e10ae9af6

Good news about Stanford is, they haven't offered anyone in '21 yet. They haven't offered a QB for '20 (Though Tanner McKee will return from his mission for the '20 season. They only offered 1 QB in '19, Tyler Hilinski who is still committed to South Carolina. They have a lot of catching up to do when they decide to get started.

Before I go any further let me be clear, I love Tyler Buchner's film, end of story. But JJ McCarthy is the smart play here. JJ had an All American season for a Sr. let alone a Soph, while Buchner rehabbed. JJ's 90 minutes from campus at a school that produced your current All American, not on the other side of the continent. It's public that ND's his dream school. Why tempt fate and play the long game with other recruits that have a higher degree of difficulty? Someone in the econ department should walk over to BK's office and explain the basics of opportunity cost & downside risk.

Lets get him offered and committed so we can get to work on '22. Got some great intel on the top '22 IN QB today...

Would it be safe to say that JJ is to Phil as Buchner is to Trevor Lawrence?

This far in advance, I'll usually cut the staff a lot of slack on offers. With that said, watching his highlights, knowing the background, and the fact they've already offered a 21' QB...…….this is a no brainer.

It sure would be pretty nice to not have to recruit a 20' or 21' QB for the next 2 years.

The staff always drags their feet with some recruitments that are head scratchers. I know that they're in good shape with that QB from So Cal, but its probably just a matter of time before that bites them in the ass like it does every year.

And this is why I even questioned posting on this subject. What is biting them in the ass this year?

The early signing period for this kid is in 2 years. How many, like programs, have a 2021 QB commit?

We offered Pyne the summer leading up to his Junior Season and he was a substantially bigger "name" or more a national recruit.

And have both of them out recruiting for you. Pyne at every event he gets invited to and McCarthy as the BOOM! QB dominating the 7v7 circuit wherever they go.

Yep. I'm here with ya and love me some Cali QB's but JJ McCarthy's Soph film already looks like KJ Costello's Jr season at SMC. Yes, Tyler Buchner appears to be an athletic freak with serious ceiling, and maybe in this case serious interest in the Irish. He's also got seriously injured and who knows what he is when he comes back? Will he be a 70%/3500/37TD-4Int guy against a schedule that's better than anything San Diego can throw at him? I'm not sure he could've done that pre-injury. Film says the best option in the '21 class is just 2 hrs from the stadium including traffic.

Good news is Naz says ND has told him they will reevaluate at the start of the year. Hopefully and Offer/Commitment soon follows.

The offer will come. Just a matter of flipping a few pages on the pinup calendar.

How about this, I agree he should get an offer, but not sure this is at pitchfork status just yet.

Also, of the last 5 classes only one of our committed or signed QB's was offered earlier than today and that was PJ. Who was probably the most advance of the group

Phil was offered in November of his Sophomore year.

Drew was offered in June between his Freshman and Sophomore years.

Edit:

Now that I have reread your post, I'm assuming that the 2020 class was outside of the "last 5 classes". The whole "committed or signed" statement threw me.

The season McCarthy just turned in as a passer far exceeds Phil's soph year and basically mirrors Phil's Senior year passing #'s. Yeah, surprised me too.

.9980 5* Preston Stone - TX - FAR - Never Visited
.9807 4* Tyler Buchner - CA - FAR - 6/16/18, 9/29/18
.9675 4* Jake Rubley - CO - FAR - 6/23/18, 9/29/18 - NO OFFER
NR NR J.J. McCarthy - IL - 1h45m - 6/23/18 & 9/1/18 - NO OFFER

I think McCarthy will get an offer. I think ND is doing a great job of getting the top guys on campus early. In 2019, they got 8 4* guys on campus (Ryan Hilinski, Graham Mertz, Dylan Morris, Hank Bachmeier, Paul Tyson, Dwan Mathis, Cade McNamara, Max Duggan) and I hope they continue the trend of getting a lot of the top talent on campus early and often in order to evaluate them and get the right QB for ND!

Yea, when I posted that I was going 15'-19' classes and said committed because technically Clark hasn't signed yet. Should've been more specific. But that's a good point to bring up. So it's either 1 of the last 5 or 2 of the last 6 if you include Pyne. You could also include the offers to Cade McNamara and Blake Barnett that were both the first "commits" of their respective classes and when they were offered. It's still not like this is "late" in the process relative to the rest of the nation or ND's recent process.
