To a certain extent, yes. Bad luck is also in the picture:
Wimbush-High 4 star with offers from many major programs;
Jurkovec-High 4 star with offers from many major programs;
Buchner-Same as above
Bad luck? Nah that’s a consistent pattern. Gunner Kiel too. For 2 3/4’s of a year they trotted out Ian Book. That’s not good enough. An elite QB could have possibly won them a title, I feel like they would have had at least a playoff win. Even when BK hit on a guy(Kizer) he still turned the QB position a shit show.

Yikes! Buchner looks like he did in the Blue Gold game. He has been awful and Tommy is awful along with him. Bad decision for either one to leave. We aren’t missing nor do we need either one of them. We are actually better off without them. Don’t want Buchner as a backup.

If you are talking about the guy who changed his motion before coming to ND, I agree. If you are talking about Rees, I strongly disagree. Buchner was ruined, or either not very good, before he enrolled at ND. Same with Wimbush and Jurkovec.
Everyone gets enamored with the physical traits of quarterbacks when it's the mental side that determines their success. Buchner just doesn't have that part, neither did Wimbush or Jurk. The best guys mentally we had under Kelly (Rees and Book) were limited physically. Getting a guy with both the physical and mental side is very difficult.

I love watching Hartman because he's calm back there and can scan the field for his 2nd and 3rd options. Buchner is a spaz who takes off at the first sign of adversity. Good kid, mediocre QB.

Simpson can actually throw. I don’t see Buchner getting the job back ever again

Important to note that Simpson was the guy that Tommy offered and tried to get before he gave Angeli the greenlight to commit. Obviously, Ty didn’t give AF. As he committed to Bama shortly after.

You can add Crist to the list. I maintain that there is some element of bad luck. Check out the committable offers from Crist, Kiel, Wimbush, Jurkovec and Buchner. Every single one of them had a bunch of offers from powerhouse programs and were all highly rated. Book was not recruited to be the starter. Notre Dame has consistently recruited highly rated Qb's but they haven't panned out, for various reasons. Book was the starter after the previous QB's flopped. He was recruited as a backup. QB recruiting is the biggest crap shoot of all positions. The only big mistake was getting Angeli instead of Allar imo. The rest, as mentioned above, was unlucky in many respects and regardless of who the OC or QB coach was in place.

Pretty sure it's not luck when it's this consistently bad. This is what incompetence looks like

And should Bama be a Top 10 game after this shitshow victory??? I think ND beats them easily.

Simpson has not looked great either. I don't see Bama winning more then 9 games with these three QBs. Their OLine has also been horrible the last two games
It’s almost like the guy in charge of their offense may not be that great. May just be a talent problem though, haven’t really followed Bama’s recruiting. Is it any good?

Buchner was definitely given an opportunity at Bama. He didn't start the first couple games but he was given the start for the 1st half of this one. His performance was so bad he got replaced with Simpson in the 2nd quarter, and then they scored. Simpson played the rest of the game.

Buchner made a mistake coming to Alabama. Idk what Rees told him but this isnt Tommy's offense, it's Bama's. Buchner doesn't fit this type of offense at all.

I'm not sure what options he has. He only has 2 years of eligibility, including this year. I guess just ride the bench and get that Alabama degree...

No one could have overcame the combo of zero reps for nearly his entire high school career, an OC/QB coach incapable of developing him *and* the worst QB coach in history breaking his throwing motion before he even got to college.
So none of it is actually his fault he is bad at football. Got it

if the offense requires the quarterback to pass the ball then he won’t be successful.

I was just watching his HS highlights and his throwing motion was a little funky then too.

Correct. That’s the least of his issues. You’ll never actually know if he’s bad at football because - and I can’t stress this enough - no one could overcome as many things working against him as he has.

You’d be wondering why Trevor Lawrence never amounted to anything if he followed this exact path.
