The days of a transfer QB should be gone for a few years.

Imo, it would take either a mass exodus at the QB room or 18 AND 8 completely falling on their faces if they were to get extended playing time.
I feel very confident with either of them starting next year and with 18 winning games if needed in 2024.

Positive write up by Driskell. Probably only slight negative is Cam Williams being behind in terms of route running but may still have a role as a deep threat type.

In the current transfer landscape I'm not sure the prospect of having a transfer QB will ever be gone. The future looks bright for us at the position, probably the brightest it's looked in some time, but even Alabama takes transfers despite the crazy classes they've landed each year. Sometimes the talent just doesn't live up to the hype. I hope that's not the case though, I really want one of our own guys to succeed again and succeed big.

This is why it’s important for one (or three) of our QBs behind Leonard to get meaningful playing time this year.

You want to know what you have under center, and there’s really only one way to find out.

Otherwise you’re always going to have an eye on the portal, which especially in our case, can trap you in an endless cycle of one-year rentals (who are themselves a roll of the dice).

Agreed. RL plays until the Irish pull away, then play the backups-all of them. Development for the next year has to be a key factor when the opportunities present themselves.

Q

Question is do we play much 3lbs this year, we hardly saw it last year
I think it all depends on who the third linebacker is. We weren't athletic enough to play 3 LB's last year, but we played it all the time when we had JOK I believe.

Ausberry & Sneed make me think you'll see more 3 LB.

Hope so. Those two have too much talent to squander.

Looks like ones at linebacker are
Drayk, Kiser and Sneed.
Safeties are Watts and Shuler.
If so that’s some athleticism.
Shuler has been receiving rave reviews. This could be a dynamite 1-2 punch with Watts. Driskell was effusive with praise for KVA also. Hard to see him not playing some this year. Truly think this '24 team, especially, on defense could play more of the younger guys which may not be a bad thing.

I’m not huge on Jaden Mickey returning punts as we don’t have a ton of depth at Corner at the moment. Credit to him for giving it a shot, but Mickens is ought to tell Biagi to give him back.
We need to get the ball in Micah Bell's hands, I miss how Holtz would always utilize his speedsters on returns!

totally agree with you on this, real surprised he hasn't gotten looks as a kick returner.

Speed is great, but not a necessity to be a great return man in college, imo. Give me someone who reliably catches the ball, with quickness and vision and the balls to hit it when the hole opens first.

With that said, Jaydan Harrison was an all American kick returner last year who is arguably the fastest player in the team. We'll see what he can do after a step up in comp.

The punt returner job isn't a real competition until fall when Faison is regularly practicing. Dude has elite quickness and the application of those lacrosse movements is fun as fuck to watch. Although reports/ videos of Greathouse this spring are promising.

I imagine that the coaching staff has already evaluated his skills as it relates to a returner, and if they were that good, he’d be on returns. If you’re fast, but have stone hands or make undisciplined decisions on the field, a coach isn’t going to risk putting him back there. He’s already a DB, which implies that he doesn’t have as good of hands as a typical WR or some RBs. I’m sure Holtz evaluated players similarly, but probably just happened to have a couple players who had the speed plus the other skills needed to be effective returners.

I thought the same. I can see him being a lot like Joey Getherall out there.

What about Love fielding punts and kick returns?

Too bad Leonard didn't use this before the 1st surgery.

JOK was 2 defensive coordinators ago…

Golden will continue with his nickel/dime look.

I don’t remember who was talking about him, but the comment was that he still needs to add some size. Hopefully he is patient enough to grow into his role

I heard the same on II podcast that Bell still needs to add a bit more mass.

Reliably catching the ball is important for ANY return, but it's more of a concern on PRs because it's much more difficult. Speed and vision are huge on KRs it was my favorite part of the game to be honest, teammates relying on you to come out and set the tone. PRs biggest priority is catching the ball, and making the first guy miss then big things can happen. I'd have Harrison and Bell back there on KRs and give Faison and JG first crack on PRs.

I was listening to the most recent II podcast today and they were answering a question about if they think Carr is ahead of Minchey (they did not, yet). Then they started talking about that either Minchey or Angeli will likely transfer before August and it got me thinking…if Minchey leaves because Carr has passed him up, does Angeli likely leave after the ‘24 season? Does that mean they go and get another transfer QB for depth in ‘25 and roll with Carr? Or do you look for a transfer to be the starter? If you get a transfer for ‘25, does Carr start looking to leave? When does this end? 😂
