Hearing the only teams that have an opportunity to move are those playing (and that'll be minimal). All others have no additional data point. A shit system that's rendering league championships useless.

Suppose I'll wait and see how it actually goes with this new system.

I'm with you to a point - as noted above, I would take bama from the 5 seed over a 7 seed against a shit team followed by SEC champ in Atlanta. That said, if they somehow pull a 5 seed with an easier path, even better.

ND had a shot at a weaker opponent a few years ago in the Fiesta against Okie State. I know it's not a playoff game but it's a major bowl against a team they should have beaten...and they shit their pants.
That ok state game is the closest they’ve come but even that was a close enough matchup,… we were only slight favorites going into that iirc

And we had to deal with the typical brigade team of bullshit about it:

I think it would be more valuable to have Notre Dame and Alabama *both* in the Quarterfinal than the single-game value of matching them up in the first round.
They have no reason to believe that Bama wins their first game

I’ll say it again,… can we PLEASE, for the love of all things good, PLEASE get one big post season game against a lesser opponent. Every other major program has gotten at least one in my adult life, most have had multiple. ND never gets that game and beyond fucking time.

They got Okie St and was up 21 in the first half in the Fiesta Bowl a couple years ago

Just barely being favored in a game isn’t really what I’m talking about,… but ok, I did say at the time it was the best matchup ND had had in forever but even that year we missed on a couple lighter matchups iirc.

If Penn State and Georgia both win, I think the committee keeps Notre Dame at 6 and drops Texas to 7 to set up a first-round Notre Dame vs. Alabama matchup. That’s the game they want, and it’s easy to justify placing a one-loss Notre Dame ahead of a two-loss Texas.

The only obstacle to this scenario is that a 7 seed Texas would likely play 2 seed Georgia in the second round. The committee might want to avoid a rematch from SECCG, especially if the alternative is texas v bam in the first round, which would be a huge draw as well. I really don't know how they can avoid it - would be a tough sell to bump Georgia over Penn State if they both win, and no chance they give SMU the 2 seed over Georgia. That's just too obvious.

If Texas and Oregon both win, the committee has a real chance to demonstrate its commitment to fairness for conferences outside the SEC and Big Ten. They will bump the Big 12 champion over a three-loss Alabama. Then, they'll trot out that Shrek-looking asshole from Michigan to deliver some nonsensical justification for their decision.

Most fans may disagree, but I’d take the 5 against Alabama over the 7 against Indiana. Sure, Alabama is the tougher opponent, but at some point, this team needs to drop their balls and beat 'em.

The 7 seed scenario - Indiana at home and then Georgia in Atlanta - would be awful IMO. Yes, Indiana is the weaker team and ND should coast, but it’s such a shit game compared to a game against bama. And after that, you’d have to face Georgia in what’s essentially a home game for them.

Alabama could absolutely come to South Bend, beat Notre Dame, and make a run of their own. But I’m willing to take that risk given the potential reward. If ND plays to their potential and bama struggles to stop the run and plays poorly on the road like they have several times this year, ND could put absoute ass beating on them. A win like that could spark a deep playoff run and may change the trajectory of the program. I’ll take that chance every time.
Agreed. It’s time. Beat Bama.

And props to you for not making the possibility of inclimate weather being a factor. It’s so overplayed & as much as I’m seeing ND fans trolling SEC fans on X, it looks like they’re just setting themselves up for Schadenfreude.

Can someone explain to me why the Mountain West conference is getting so much credit in these play off scenarios?

You can't convince me that if UNLV wins against Boise St that suddenly they're worthy of being a top 12 playoff team.
Plus, why do they get a home conference championship game when everyone else is playing on a neutral field?

Equals a first round bye. I see.

Every team in the dance is praying for this round 2 matchup

I don't really see what having a home field conference championship has to do with playoff seeding. Boise St. may not be favored in Vegas, but I'd still rather see them get into the playoffs than a boring SEC team that's lost 25% of its games.

I agree. Point is they’re getting a bye simply because they play shitty teams in a shitty conference that no neutral site will host.

Cross-post with the Week 14 watch thread. This is how I see the committee shaking things out depending on who wins each conference.

Interestingly, if our preference is to avoid Alabama, we do not have any rooting interest until *after* we know how the SECCG shakes out.

Everything seems extremely straight forward to me except for two things:

1. Would Penn State fall past us with a loss? Would they also fall past Ohio State, who beat them head-to-head?

2. Will SMU fall past Alabama with a loss?

What do I need to be looking for today from our resident smart folks? Are we locked in to playing Alabama no matter what or is there some way that we don’t have to start with them?

They just went over scenarios on game day. There's a million things that can happen today that'll send EVERYTHING into chaos. I'm really interested to see how far Texas would drop if Georgia beats them. Same with Penn St.

I could see us falling all the way to the 7 seed playing Penn St or Texas in the 2nd round.

There's a million variables still. Unreal

The simplest scenario would be for SMU to lose close but stay in the field and take Alabama out entirely. But assuming that a losing SMU would fall past Alabama...

If Texas and Oregon both lose, we play Indiana.

If Texas and Oregon both win, we play Clemson, Arizona State, or Iowa State.

If Texas and Oregon split, we almost certainly play Alabama.

I assume we end up playing either Clemson, Arizona State, Iowa State, or Bama in the first round assuming Penn State loses.
