ND's offense hasn't seen a defense like UNC's yet this year.
Because of these two truths, I think this game is a legit toss up. The entire reason I leaned towards UNC rests solely on how inept and dysfunctional our offense has been this year. This could be a coming out party for the offense, but if they continue to sputter with bad QB play, dropped passes, penalties, etc....I don't think ND scores enough points to win. Even if the defense holds their own and keeps UNC in check, ND's offense still has to score. I guess we'll see if they're up to the task.
That’s what concerns me, too. Add in the addition of Downs & other skill players being available, it could be Drake Maye’s coming out party. But…like u said…he hasn’t see a D like the Irish. ND has to live up to that equation though. If they take this game off like they did vs Marshall, ND will get boatraced. If they allow UNC to get a ground game going like Marshall did, it will get ugly as Maye will have plenty of time to find a receiver w/ the run game established (they’ve struggled running the ball thus far vs inferior teams)
Chizik knows Rees will try to replicate the run game the way they did in the 2nd half vs Cal. It’s ND’s only chance to give Pyne a shot. He also knows Pyne is an undersized less-mobile QB who could be goaded into throwing it to the other team. Throwing a pick six to a floundering defense is all the momentum they need to gain confidence. Let’s hope Pyne got his nerves calmed last week and it maintains.
I’ll be interested to see if ND can contain Downs. He’s going to get his catches but where he hurts opponents is w/ YAC. I read where this offseason they had Downs learn every WR position so he can move around based on matchup. Hell w/o Downs, I’d take the UNC WR Corps over what ND has. Their other WR have excelled in Downs absence so Maye will have no shortage of capable hands to throw too. Finally, that Cal offense was atrocious but it was almost good enough to beat ND or at least force OT. Hope they have a better strategy for defending the QB on 3rd & longs.
I visited Keenan Stadium to watch ND face UNC back in 2008. ND was winning at halftime. I literally get back to my seat for the first drive of the 2nd half & Clausen throws a pick six. ND never recovered and lost a heartbreaker. For a basketball school, UNC fans probably hold that ND win at home as one of their fondest memories...which is said b/c that ND team was bad & UNC was still in the Butch Davis era where they were looking to be a real player in the ACC. Remember Marvin Austin?
