Hope the OL leaders take this opportunity to lead within their position groups and get back to "wrecking" status. Not sure I like that LBs and RBs are not part of the swat team leadership.

I wouldn't judge the position groups based on winter camp leaders...

Additionally, most of those players are young/possible 1st time starters. They really haven't "earned" recognition from on the field play. It's their turn to learn from some of the vets.

(side note: both of the postition groups are wildcards for sure, simply saying the "captaincy" thing doesn't make a difference, at all, imo).

IDK. Instead of having 2 OL and 2DL, I'd rather have one each, and have Jafar (JR) in the mix, and perhaps Bilal (5th) for the sake of representation. Hainsey is only a sophomore, which doesn't bother me in itself, but still in over 2 upper class starters.

Jafar hasn’t been on campus as long as Hainsey. Both are sophomores and Hainsey was an EE and pretty much a two year starter.

When I said Jafar was a JR, I was talking about for the 2019 season. But you're right on Hainsey. Rivals shows him as a year behind (true class) Jafar, which is wrong since they were both 17

So if the captains are coming out of that group and you have 3 who are they?
I say:
Gilman
Finke
E'berg

This has merit.
I always think they like to have OL players all up in the leadership group. But maybe it could just be Gilman and Book.

I'm fine with OL, but if your QB is upper class, and is NOT a quiet introvert, he needs a leadership position. The QB is the leader of the O 99% of the time, so he should be captain.

Whoever is the biggest performer/voice combo on D needs to be there too. I'm guessing though Gilman is that guy. I like both Okwara and Kareem from a demeanor perspective. Either one if fine, but I think Kareem gives off a tougher/meaner vibe. Okwara is awesome, but too polished/clean for me. I want mean/nasty from the D captains.

And I'd love to have a 4th, being the nastiest OL we have.

Overall, give me 2 from each side of the ball. One of each of the big or big skill players (OL and DL), and one each of the skill players (DBs, QBs, etc..

Per II Podcast,

“Asmar Bilal is definitely moving to Buck linebacker”

Ovie Oghuofo to Drop “That’s where he’s moving to”

Joe Wilkins to Corner “They need candidates at boundary corner and we expect him to move there as well”

“Darnell Ewell, we’re pretty sure he’s moving back to defensive tackle”

Those are the position changes I’ve heard in the podcast. Happy to see two more DLineman added to the room where depth is always needed and valued.

There can't be any real question about Book and Gilman being two of the captains can there? It would be a mini-apocalypse if those two weren't chosen.

It would be very interesting to know who does the hard-a$$ talking on the OLine (since we have no obvious AA quality proven guy to give captaincy to.) The other O captain might well be Chris Finke instead --- Kelly REALLY honors the vets.

If there's a second D player, who's the more mature "calm-killer" among Kareem, Okwara, or Elliot? That guy would get the coaching nod. ... and will Kelly let the Team pick the 4th like last year?

Foggy crystal: Kelly picks Book and Gilman and Finke, and lets the team pick a 4th.

Bilal? He's not going to be a star and I don't know much about his intangibles but he is an experienced senior and it's always good to have leadership at that position.

Book and Gilman would be my two no brainers as well.

Love Finke to death, but just not sure. Part of me says absolutely, part of me can see his reps declining. Regardless, I think he'd be a great leader, but I think I'd prefer an OL big screaming nasty stuff than have little Finke giving a polished pep talk (we already have Book with that kind of demeanor). BK is overly honoring of the vets so he probably will get the nod too.

Give me Book and Gilman, and then two psycho killer trash talking big uglies from the trenches (one O and one D).

Can't see it. I don't know much about his intangibles either, but his few appearances in interviews, didn't leave me thinking vocal leader. Hope he steps up balls this year with DT and Coney gone. I'd rather him focus on the position change to Buck and leading the young kids by example.

I don’t know who should be captains (tho agree Book and Gilman are kind of no-brainers) but we need strong player leadership next year. The kind we’ve had the last two years (and particularly ‘17).

I worry about a repeat of 2016 (not quite as catastrophic, but a down year) when we had lost so many quality, experienced leaders, and when things got tough, there was no one on the field able to turn it around.

I know we like to blame coaches but player leadership is really important too. Hopefully BK’s reboot is built to outlast the guys who lived through it as players. This coming season will test that.

If you're looking at defenders, it's gotta be Kareem or Elliott.

Kareem is the model of busting your ass to back up your accolades, and he's also gotta have major respect with teammates and coaches in the bank based on how he fought through nagging injuries to keep wrecking OL's.

Elliott, on the other hand, is kind of the perfect model of the way a player can develop at ND. He went through some early issues, struggled with his position and fundamentals, and looked like an athletic safety that just couldn't quite get there to make plays in coverage... but now, he's a model for being in the right place at the right time, and that's based on his development and improvement. He went from being a liability in coverage, to being a dude who is jumping the appropriate routes with confidence.

I don't think you can go wrong, but I'd put my money on Elliott based on where he appeared to be when pressed into service, versus where he is now.

Elliott is a great model for player development. Not clear what he's like as a off-field/locker room guy (no reason to think he's not fine). But I do suspect Gilman is as close to a lock for captain as one can be and I'm not sure you want/need two defensive captains who play the same position.

I'd lean toward Kareem, who chose to come back for his senior year, who seems a bit more like a face-of-the-program type guy (Harvard/Yale offers, son of a football coach), and who happens to be a very very good football player.

But like you said, probably can't go wrong either way.

This is how I envision it:

1A's
Finke
Eichenberg
Hainsey ----- I think he's more vocal than Eich
Book ----- Calm/steady QB
Khalid
Hinish ----- Outsider pick - nasty motor who never gives up
Gilman ----- After last season and seeing his vocals - got to.
Elliott

1B's
Pride
Kraemer
Okwara
Claypool

1C's
Jones Jr.
Hayes
Bilal

Mike Frank had some interesting thoughts today. I won't post all of them but a couple of note, because they differ from what II has been saying. KAR will start at WR, not RB. And they like Wilkins at WR.

Also, very high praise for Keys.

I think Keys and Austin will end up doing being a great duo. Just hope Lenzy makes it a trio.

So who is right bout Wilkins. 247 with CB or ISD at WR.....
And disagreement about KAR as well.
