Always looking.

I didn't post Roman Johnson's info to say ND should recruit him. I haven't looked at his film in depth or studied him basically at all (though 2 academy offers are a great opening data point). I posted it to remind everyone that though it's late in the game, there are guys out there who we've never heard of that are worthy of ND's consideration and that will become stars in college.

Here's a couple of kids I would recruit for sure.

Gabe Newburgh deserves better than Mitten U. Inside every Michigan commit from Ohio is a depressed young man crying out for an Irish offer.

Travon Thomas is a kid I found kicking around the local Chicago papers last year. He had a phenomenal year at Leyden Twp and then moved down to Miami. I think he's playing for Luke Skywalker. He went down there and tore up FSU's invite camp and then the offers started rolling in. The fact that he got 0 Midwest offers playing at Leyden (same 6A-7A conference as the Downers Grove North & South, Hinsdale South, Addison Trail, Willowbrook) is criminal. His tape shows an athlete that is just plain different. There's tape out there of him at DT, DE and MLB. If the right coach gets a hold of him, watch TFO.

Here's Thomas dragging down Chez Mellusi this year. (Mellusi actually went off... surprise) Thomas hasn't put together a mid-season highlight film for '18 yet.

I played against Edison High in basketball in high school. They are an awful academic school. Like terrible. I have no idea what the kid’s transcripts look like and by no means am I saying he’s a bad student, but from the schools in Georgia that you see ND pulling from Edison is not even in the same playing field academically so I don’t know if ND would venture down there unless the kid is a giant exception for that school.

I have no idea what his transcripts are either but if he took care of business in suburban Chicago, one year at a buster Miami public school wouldn't kill him. Leyden Twp is a factory for sports executives, really interesting so many prominent people went there.

Nah, he's staying for that degree. Big bro and Mama wouldn't let him go

How many players that leave early for the draft and then just come back to finish their degrees during the offseason is it gonna take for this line of thinking to finally go away? (No offense zv, lots of ppl bring up that point)

I just saw Malzahn has a $31M buyout this season which means there’s no chance he gets fired. That’s stupid money. USC and Michigan are still competing for conference championships so they still have a shot at a great season, but those two coaches might wear thin with their fans if they continue to lose important games and come up small in big moments. It’s hard to say which big programs will move on from their coaches. I hope Harbaugh gets axed before he gets the Michigan train rolling for the next couple of years because he’s too good of a football coach to keep losing.

I agree re: Helton and Harbaugh, but, like you said, both still have a legit shot at 10-win/conference championship type seasons. So, hard to see them getting fired this year unless things really go south. (Like, USC loses to UCLA and us to end the season kind of south)

As for if/when they ultimately pull the trigger, I kind of feel like both Michigan and USC are where a lot of ND fans have been with Kelly. Maybe not good enough for the Promised Land, but pretty good, and better than any clear alternative. It takes a lot of stones to toss a guy like that.

How many actually do that though? (Hint: Not many)

Oh I know. It's more along the lines of Nigerian family, plus him possibly being able to use another year to improve his stock. His production is high right now, but will that translate into a high 1st round projection? Or is it closer to 2nd? If it's 2nd in this loaded Edge class, I think he could come back, work on his craft/get built more by Balis, then unleash an unreal Senior campaign that sees him skyrocket into a top 15 pick like Leonard Floyd and Vic Beasley, both of whom were 4 years removed from high school before declaring.

I don't feel like researching every individual player, but I feel like I can remember hearing about Clausen and KVR coming back. Maybe Golden Tate too? Plus I'm pretty sure Kizer, ESB, and Josh Adams have stated their intentions to come back to ND. And if they have successful NFL careers, do they really even need the degree? Not that many players leave early, so there won't be a ton of examples either way. Just saying, if Okwara left and was a dud in the league, he could easily come back and finish that degree.

Great example in this case: Add Darius Walker to the list. Left early, didn't make it in the league, came back, graduated and now does color for one of the networks.

Lots of people say they will. Pretty much everyone who leaves ND early says they will come back and graduate.

But the list of early departures who have actually done so - Clausen, KVR, Golden Tate (I believe finished his at home in Tennessee) and Darius Walker are the ones I'm aware of - is a lot shorter than the list of people who have not. (A quick search suggests Rudolph, Niklas, Tuitt, Atkinson, Jaylon, Fuller among recent three-and-outs who didn't come back and graduate)

Hell, Jerome Bettis has been retired for like 15 years and he never has quite made it back to finish.

I get it. Life happens. Turns out the NFL doesn't leave you a lot of free time to study. Maybe you decide you don't need it after all. Whatever. But an NFL career lasts a few years, even if you do "make the league." If you have the chance to graduate from Notre Dame, you should, while you can.

He must have caught some grief from Pete K cuz he put UW Commit back into his Twitter bio.

A recruiting analyst told me not to read into any of this but I'm a big believer in smoke.

I'll get the full scoop in the near future. Just like I did with Trice.

OL .9565 4* Enokk Vimahi - HI - FAR - 9/1/18
DL .9254 4* Isaiah Foskey - CA - FAR - 7/28/18 & 9/29/18
WR .9080 4* Cornelius Johnson - CT - FAR - 3/3/18 & 9/1/18
LB .9025 4* Asa Turner - CA - FAR - 6/16/18
LB .8993 4* JD Bertrand - GA - FAR - 11/19/16 & 10/13/18 & 11/10/18

Anyone else left on the board that the staff is going hard after? I'm sure there are 50 guys or so they may have put calls out to just to get a pulse on their commitment to other schools, but wanted to know if they are legit going hard after some other names. I really like the list of guys above to go after because they are very talented and top of the board talents. I would want a DLineman and LBer the most out of the remaining position groups and I think Foskey and Turner would be a dynamite finish.

Crus, what was the full scoop with Trice.....Did Elston go a little tepid due to his lacklustre effort?

They may try for an SDE like flipping Nate Leskovec or going after TCU decommit Myron Warren. Probably contingent on what happens with Foskey.

OK bad wording on my part there. I don't have the full scoop = I don't know what happened yet after his ND visit. What I was referring to was I was told it was going to be UDub in early September and posted... Hate to do it but: CB for Washington... and I didn't change it when conventional rumor said he was a silent at some point. After I saw him, I didn't care if ND lost as long as Foskey was still in play. I'll eventually get the full skinny on Trice and Foskey.

Mentioned this kid before but was just offered by USC and is looking to OV to ND soon.

If they're really looking at him, there's going to be all kinds of roster movement this off season or something worse... which I can't even type... is a possibility to happen in the '19 class. Either way, don't want it to happen.

Is this for a PWO? Do they really need a third corner and if so can't they find somebody they have traction with already?

He's got SC, Oregon, Utah (& more) offers. He's no PWO candidate. He's also a LB who plays a lot of DE in HS.

Definitely not a corner. His 2019 film is basically him playing LB. So seems like a rover candidate or maybe safety. Needs to add some weight to play rover though IMO. Wonder how he slipped through the cracks?
