Man, at least we'll have another year of Alohi, right? Good safety play is something we haven't seen in a long time

He has two more years. Played as freshman, sat as soph, play Junior, senior, 5th year.

Gilman graduated from high school in '15 and did a year at Naval Academy Prep before enrolling in the Naval Academy. Not sure if any of those classes at Naval Prep were able to transfer to Navy and/or ND. So this is his 4th year out of high school.

Due to any combination of graduating/age/ability, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he moved on after next year. We'll see though. Hope he sticks around.

Why would he move on?
I mean, unless he's a given for a 1-3 rounder, why leave a starting position on a good FB team? And bonus, more free education..

I'm not predicting he will but zelezo's post kind of sums it up. Lots of ballers behind him. At some point, those guys will deserve snaps.

Because of the reasons I just inferred in my post. Further, because he may be ready to move on with life after being out of high school for over 5 years, and not want to do a 6th year. Because he may have finished an undergraduate and graduate degree. Because he may play in the NFL. Because he may want to try his hand in the NFL anyway. Because maybe the team won't be that great in 3 years. Because he gets married. Because he may have a kid or two. Because guys leave all the time, for a myriad of reasons.

Or maybe he stays.

I wouldn't just go ahead and write him down as the S at ND in 2020.

Maybe.. I just don't see him losing his starting spot next year to HG, or exiting because of competition the year after. I could see some position swapping though. He's a bonafide leader out there and it's just hard for me to see those types leaving if it's not for the NFL. And I can see Allen moving to LB if he puts on weight.

I never right anyone in two years in advance. I just don't see a reason other than the NFL that's likely given his performance. The fact that he sat out a year to be here makes me think he's in no rush. But who knows. Anything can happen. I'll bet you a 100B Vbucks he's here though if not in the NFL or injured lol..

I don't think it's really as cut and dry as losing his starting job or not. And he's certainly coming back next season.

But right now he's playing, what, 90%+ of snaps? That number will more than likely only decrease over the these next 2 seasons. At that point, let's say he's got a 5th-6th round grade, would he rather take his degree and that draft result or play 50-60% of snaps for a 5th year. Because, at that point, you have to be actively grooming the next round of S's with the talent coming in. The only reason we don't see it happening now, is because there is stark drop off at most positions. The staff wants to rotate in players when the talent level between the two is close. ILB last season we had a 3 for 2. Right now, WDE is basically 50/50. Hinish has played 129 snaps to Bonner's 188.

I'd like to see him get to 65-70% of snaps, and hang around. I get what you are saying. What do you realistically think his draft ceiling might be?

Watching film on JD Bertrand. Seems like he is a similar player to Eichenberg, at least on film. Wonder why ND is going after him vs. Tommy?

It has been very obvious that the staff has put a major focus on recruiting the state of Georgia and they have already started reaping the benefits on the trail (Hamilton, Wallace, Allen, Tremble, Flemister). There are a lot of really good recruits in the ATL area and they go to schools that will help them succeed at a school like Notre Dame.

Also, Bertrand's offer list is more impressive than Lil Eichenberg's. That is usually what I go off of.

I was thinking the same thing in regards to GA. Definitely physical differences between JD and Tommy. Wonder if the staff thinks that translates differently to a better player? I think JD has a better chance to play all 3 LB positions where as Tommy is more a pure Mike.

Its not even a guarantee Notre Dame fully recruits Bertrand as they haven't offered him yet. Maybe they won't like what they see when he visits? But Notre Dame has seen Tommy Eich on person and they didn't offer; I really trust their evals on recruits, especially when this one probably came from Lea.

Yeah I hope they offer JD. His film was great. He looks like a bruiser with quickness. If Balis gets a hold of him look out.

Thought I’d drop this here. A list of a couple of recruits committed to schools who might fire their staffs or are having bad seasons or are vastly inferior programs which might prompt flipping possibilities.

.9641 4* DB Marquez Beason - Illinois
.9502 4* WR/QB Isaiah Williams - Illinois
.9634 4* DB Nick Cross - FSU
.9114 4* LB Kalen DeLoach - FSU
.9108 4* DL Curtis Fann - FSU
.9046 4* DL Derick Hunter - FSU
.9226 4* WR Trey Knox - Arkansas - Hogs over UF, GT, ND, Stanford, Vandy offers???
.9035 4* WR Jaden Payoute - VT
.9140 4* RB Jirehl Brock - IA ST - 4,000yds+ rushing (conference record all time), personal fave
.9213 4* WR Nolan Groulx - WF
.9134 4* WR Donovan Greene - WF
.9686 4* DL Jowon Briggs - Virginia
.9623 4* DL George Karlaftis - Purdue
.9065 4* DL Beau Robbins - Indiana
.8919 4* LB Tommy Eichenberg - BC

I think also USC, Auburn, and Michigan are all programs that could quickly turn sour with another loss or two to each of those schools. There would be ample talent to chase if firings were to happen.

Unfortunately of those three Auburn may be the most likely to have turnover (of coordinators at least, if they can't buy out Malzahn), and the least likely to have recruits we'd be likely to land.

Though I see Auburn currently has the commitment of Cam'Ron Kelly. Four-star CB with ND interest (even called it his "dream school!") who it looked like we passed on for never-fully-explained reasons.

I just saw Malzahn has a $31M buyout this season which means there’s no chance he gets fired. That’s stupid money. USC and Michigan are still competing for conference championships so they still have a shot at a great season, but those two coaches might wear thin with their fans if they continue to lose important games and come up small in big moments. It’s hard to say which big programs will move on from their coaches. I hope Harbaugh gets axed before he gets the Michigan train rolling for the next couple of years because he’s too good of a football coach to keep losing.

I remember us passing on Dieter and he lit up cfb at Bowling Green. I'd be all for offering just in case Foskey doesn't work out

Crus is looking for a new Drop?

Always looking.

I didn't post Roman Johnson's info to say ND should recruit him. I haven't looked at his film in depth or studied him basically at all (though 2 academy offers are a great opening data point). I posted it to remind everyone that though it's late in the game, there are guys out there who we've never heard of that are worthy of ND's consideration and that will become stars in college.

Here's a couple of kids I would recruit for sure.

Gabe Newburgh deserves better than Mitten U. Inside every Michigan commit from Ohio is a depressed young man crying out for an Irish offer.

Travon Thomas is a kid I found kicking around the local Chicago papers last year. He had a phenomenal year at Leyden Twp and then moved down to Miami. I think he's playing for Luke Skywalker. He went down there and tore up FSU's invite camp and then the offers started rolling in. The fact that he got 0 Midwest offers playing at Leyden (same 6A-7A conference as the Downers Grove North & South, Hinsdale South, Addison Trail, Willowbrook) is criminal. His tape shows an athlete that is just plain different. There's tape out there of him at DT, DE and MLB. If the right coach gets a hold of him, watch TFO.

Here's Thomas dragging down Chez Mellusi this year. (Mellusi actually went off... surprise) Thomas hasn't put together a mid-season highlight film for '18 yet.

The staff is actively looking for new prospects to add to the board, especially at DE. They’ve been linking up with prospects and gathering transcripts on a few guys. I would assume it’s a precursor to some new offers.

This is good.

I just assumed that Crus is all on board the Okwara as a 1st rounder leaving early train. I'm hoping he stays for one more year...
