Man, at least we'll have another year of Alohi, right? Good safety play is something we haven't seen in a long time
He has two more years. Played as freshman, sat as soph, play Junior, senior, 5th year.

We also have Derrick Allen who I believe is redshirting this year?
Gilman graduated from high school in '15 and did a year at Naval Academy Prep before enrolling in the Naval Academy. Not sure if any of those classes at Naval Prep were able to transfer to Navy and/or ND. So this is his 4th year out of high school.
Due to any combination of graduating/age/ability, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he moved on after next year. We'll see though. Hope he sticks around.
Why would he move on?
I mean, unless he's a given for a 1-3 rounder, why leave a starting position on a good FB team? And bonus, more free education..

I'm not predicting he will but zelezo's post kind of sums it up. Lots of ballers behind him. At some point, those guys will deserve snaps.
Because of the reasons I just inferred in my post. Further, because he may be ready to move on with life after being out of high school for over 5 years, and not want to do a 6th year. Because he may have finished an undergraduate and graduate degree. Because he may play in the NFL. Because he may want to try his hand in the NFL anyway. Because maybe the team won't be that great in 3 years. Because he gets married. Because he may have a kid or two. Because guys leave all the time, for a myriad of reasons.
Or maybe he stays.
I wouldn't just go ahead and write him down as the S at ND in 2020.
Maybe.. I just don't see him losing his starting spot next year to HG, or exiting because of competition the year after. I could see some position swapping though. He's a bonafide leader out there and it's just hard for me to see those types leaving if it's not for the NFL. And I can see Allen moving to LB if he puts on weight.
I don't think it's really as cut and dry as losing his starting job or not. And he's certainly coming back next season.
But right now he's playing, what, 90%+ of snaps? That number will more than likely only decrease over the these next 2 seasons. At that point, let's say he's got a 5th-6th round grade, would he rather take his degree and that draft result or play 50-60% of snaps for a 5th year. Because, at that point, you have to be actively grooming the next round of S's with the talent coming in. The only reason we don't see it happening now, is because there is stark drop off at most positions. The staff wants to rotate in players when the talent level between the two is close. ILB last season we had a 3 for 2. Right now, WDE is basically 50/50. Hinish has played 129 snaps to Bonner's 188.
JD Bertand decommited from UGA. Lots of interesting follow action going on.

Watching film on JD Bertrand. Seems like he is a similar player to Eichenberg, at least on film. Wonder why ND is going after him vs. Tommy?
It has been very obvious that the staff has put a major focus on recruiting the state of Georgia and they have already started reaping the benefits on the trail (Hamilton, Wallace, Allen, Tremble, Flemister). There are a lot of really good recruits in the ATL area and they go to schools that will help them succeed at a school like Notre Dame.
Also, Bertrand's offer list is more impressive than Lil Eichenberg's. That is usually what I go off of.
I was thinking the same thing in regards to GA. Definitely physical differences between JD and Tommy. Wonder if the staff thinks that translates differently to a better player? I think JD has a better chance to play all 3 LB positions where as Tommy is more a pure Mike.
Its not even a guarantee Notre Dame fully recruits Bertrand as they haven't offered him yet. Maybe they won't like what they see when he visits? But Notre Dame has seen Tommy Eich on person and they didn't offer; I really trust their evals on recruits, especially when this one probably came from Lea.
I think also USC, Auburn, and Michigan are all programs that could quickly turn sour with another loss or two to each of those schools. There would be ample talent to chase if firings were to happen.
Unfortunately of those three Auburn may be the most likely to have turnover (of coordinators at least, if they can't buy out Malzahn), and the least likely to have recruits we'd be likely to land.
Though I see Auburn currently has the commitment of Cam'Ron Kelly. Four-star CB with ND interest (even called it his "dream school!") who it looked like we passed on for never-fully-explained reasons.

Meet Roman Johnson.
Second in the nation to Mataio Soli in sacks with 18 but then add...
133 tkls and 30 TFL's... in just 7 games. Plays bigger school competition in the Guilford Co / Greensboro area.
Has 10+ offers - most FCS but has AF and West Point offers too.

Crus is looking for a new Drop?
Crus is looking for a new Drop?
The staff is actively looking for new prospects to add to the board, especially at DE. They’ve been linking up with prospects and gathering transcripts on a few guys. I would assume it’s a precursor to some new offers.
