Based on his results last year and assuming our D is top 25 like most say, I think we'll see 2-3 INTs, and 3 or more sacks of SP. He had 2 or more INTs against any team with a decent D (Cal's D sucked and he threw 3 picks) except for Auburn, who gave them the underneath.

Athlon ranks us:
18th best DBs
21st best DL
8th best LB

Michigan is top 5 in all categories.

Here are 4 reasons their defense is in the top 5.... Irish's offensive is going to have to play very well IMO.

Agree. Not so concerned about their secondary. I think it comes down to 1) can BW pass consistently and keep them honest, and 2) can our D make Shea look like he did on the road in the SEC (and against Cal).

I'm pretty confident in 2.

In yesterday player interviews Daelin Hayes said that he's up to 31 reps on 225. Even if that is an exaggeration, for comparison, Bradley Chubb did 25 at the combine.

This DL makes me want to run through a wall.

To be fair, Georgia in Week Two did the exact same thing to our running game that Miami did in Week Ten, with similar results. I’m not sure it was “figuring us out” so much as having the athletes necessary to execute, and, then, Wimbush’s inability to adapt.

I have confidence in Wimbush. I don't understand the worry at all with him. So Brandon Wimbush had the 18th highest QBR (rushing metrics included) all of last year. It's well documented that he only completed 49% of his passes. I accredit a lot of the issue to be mental and a lack of confidence. If Wimbush doesn't get hurt I believe we will see him in the Top 10 in QBR. He accounted for 30 total TDs and only 6 picks and he's looked at as a liability. His completion percentage will rise drastically this year. I guarantee it.
People calling for Book on here makes me laugh at some people and the level of acceptance of mediocre records. If you want a 8-4 season, go ahead and clamor for Ian Book. If you want a chance at the playoffs. It's Wimbush... It's not even a question that should be in any Irish fans mind.

Don't know if it's been mentioned (or if this is even news at this point)...

Yesterday's "instant analysis" with Prister, he stated that Dex got very little work and appears obvious he's suspended.

I completely agree with you and am by no means “clamoring for Book.” A better Wimbush is how we make the playoffs.
Just pointing out that the defenses that shut down our running game didn’t so much “figure us out” as they out-athleted us up front, and our then-green QB couldn’t make them pay. Hopefully that changes this year.

Couple with that the fact the two freshman RB's were not practicing either, yeah he's not playing till Stanford. Pete did say in the article about Tony Jones that Dexter did have a play he took to the house for 60 yards though. So he's gettin a little bit of work.

BGI did a August 9th practice report podcast

Yoon looks great, ball explodes off his foot.
Ian Book is the starting holder.

Lawrence Keyes looks good, fastest WR off the ball and knows how to get open.

Dirksen looks physically ready and good in the run game as second team RT

Patterson good feet, undersized but competing as second team LT with Banks out.

WR's inconsistent, too many drops. Secondary is strong though.

Alize had the catch of the day.

C'bo and Jahmir Smith didnt practice. Dexter got more reps but Tony Jones is looking good.

He's always looked the part in practice. They were drooling over him last year and he was the least productive back of the big three. Kid is a player and he has a real shot the first four games to establish himself as 15-25 touch a game type of back. Hopefully he takes the opportunity and runs with it.

Yup. A couple tings left unsaid in the "regression" narrative:
1. Both Adams and Wimbush were hurt for the last third of the season where their production fell off a cliff.
2. Teams we faced stopped letting us spread them out sideline-to-sideline... they stopped respecting the WR screen, etc. because we weren't effective on it. We didn't adjust our offensive scheme to account for stacking of the box and attacking the slow developing running plays.

So it was a combo of our coaches not putting the offense in position to succeed and them not being 100%. He didn't magically just go from lighting up USC and Wake to god awful over night because of magic or some other sudden nonsense.

Really good point. Long is a young coach but he needs to develop and start adjusting as the game and season progresses.

A mild one. His completion percentage will rise without a doubt. I'm all aboard the Wimbush Hype train. 2nd year starting. Another year of rapport with developing receivers. A completion % that has no wear to go but up. I know this is cliche but if he can keep his confidence and poise and stay healthy I think we are going to see a breakout year for him where 35-40 total TD's is plausible and likely.

Georgia has one of the best defensive minds in the country at head coach and had the athletes needed to go toe-to-toe. We couldn't push them around up front, Wimbush couldn't beat them with his arm, and the 19 points we scored wasn't enough to win it. It happens sometimes, especially against the one of the top 3 teams in the country.

I'd be happy with 55% this year as long as he beats scUM and every home opponent, is decent enough to win over subpar teams, and doesn't look like a deer in the headlights.

Basically, I'm good with 10-2 with losses to VT and USC.

My biggest fear is that he shits the bed out of the gate vs scUM, is pulled, and then we have a year of back and forth.

What would you rather have happen? Consider the long haul of the season...

Scenario 1
: We lose to Michigan 27-24. But the defense and BW look awesome. We fumble once on kick return and once from a young RB, but overall we should have won the game. BW goes 19/27, with 278 yards, 2 TDs, 0 picks, and 50 yards rushing.

Scenario 2: We win on a couple bone head plays by Michigan 24-17. It feels like they should have won, but we get the W. BW plays awful. 12/29, 165 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs.

I'll always take an ugly win over a bad loss.
Unless.... If 1 means that BW plays awesome the rest of the year, and goes undefeated... A one loss team, who lost to a good opponent in the first game is likely in the playoffs most years.

Scenario 2. Everyone can take the W and realize there is room for growth. Wimbush can brush it off as first game against a marquee opponent. We go on to win the next 13 and hoist the trophy.

Did Koon just ask if we rather win or lose?

Ok, we've reach peak Koon.

I'd take scenario 2, but seeing BW kill it against the best defense we'll see would have me feeling REALLY confident the rest of the year, especially if we should have won. If it weren't Michigan, I'd choose scenario 1. But I just couldn't handle losing against Michigan.

In 5 years you've never evolved as a poster. You are a one-sentence, first layer rip and that's it.

You have the depth of a teaspoon.

The question was asked on one of the podcasts, can't remember which now, and I found myself thinking that is pretty silly. I'd always, without a shadow of a doubt, take the W, unless you are somehow guaranteeing the future outcomes, which you can't. Because neither scenario is guaranteeing more W's or L's, in future games, it is very silly to take the L. Makes zero sense.

Sure, technically nothing is guaranteed during the future. But if BW lights it up, the defense plays great, and we lose because of a few bad penalties and bone head fumbles... I'd feel really good about playing VT, Stanford, FSU, NW, and USC down the road.

BW will have already played the best defense, and dominated, not to mention in the first game. While I can't prove that 0-1 ND team is going to win 11 more games, I'd feel really good about them in every single game.

Or Michigan gets screwed, they have a couple unforced turnovers, and we sneak out a win we know we were out played in, and BW is really bad, borderline pulled, and we have another QB debate...

I feel strongly that 1-0 team is getting exposed at least twice against the likes of FSU, VT, Stanford, etc.

I understand the bizarre logic in play, I just think it's bizarre.

Or, we take the ugly W, Wimbush isn't very good but like against LSU, Book comes in week 2, as an above average game manager. We find out our defense is truly elite as we have multiple future NFL players on it. Circa 2012, we ride a quality game manager QB and an elite defense to a 12-0 record, all because we won that ugly game against UM week 1.

See.....you can always create scenarios that sound good. Plus, there is so much change during the season that whether we feel comfortable or not, is irrelevant. Teams improve or regress dramatically throughout seasons.

Always take the W, never know what is going to happen.

So will the ND Student Section wave their keys this season calling for a key play or celebrating a KEYS PLAY?
