ND deserves 3, but will get 4 because of pressure from big 10 and other conferences, as well as ding them for not playing a championship game. At least that's my prediction. Maybe I'm just saying that as a coping mechanism and setting myself up now for the outrage instead of waiting 8 more days.

In no universe does ND get left out. Very low probability of dropping from 3. As some pointed out already, even if georgia beats bama, if we drop to 4 that would create an immediate rematch which the committee likely wouldn't allow.

The whole point of the playoff system was to avoid a scenario where 3 or 4 teams had relatively equal claims to the title game with no unbiased method of differentiating between them. The most obvious version is 3 or more undefeated teams playing a P5 schedule with multiple wins over ranked opponents. Right now, 3 teams fall into that category - Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame. Every other team’s claim to compete is distinguishable on objective grounds - one or more losses or weak conference schedule.

One of them must get in to make the playoff mechanically possible, but there’s not a single team outside of the 3 undefeateds whose exclusion from the title game would have raised any objection under the old BCS system. Leaving ND out would be completely contrary to the core purpose of the playoff and could well plant the seed of another crisis of confidence in the current system. Can’t imagine that happens.

ND is untouchable.

Clemson getting the doors beat off them would keep them out. Alabama getting rolled bad would keep them out. There is literally one team that is 100% safe....that team resides in South Bend, Indiana. They aren't kicking out a 12-0 ND. Under any circumstances.

After what OSU did to Michigan yesterday, if they blow out Northwestern, I think you'll hear some Big Ten homers forget about Purdue and their generally crappy second half of the season and say OSU should be 3rd.

Even if that flawed argument somehow prevails though, we're 4th. Nobody outside of Oklahoma seems to respect that team and their dumpster fire of a defense. Their last win would be discounted as a rematch. And the Big 12 has a long, storied, history of being the odd man out in these situations. They'll whine but no one will care.

We'll travel just fine ourselves, I suspect. If anything the Dallas Tourism Board should be pulling for ND. They'll sell a lot more hotel rooms than they will to day-tripping (and local) OU fans.
