If Bama and Clemson go undefeated, ND loses a close game, I think the debate between ND, MI/OSU, Oklahoma, Wash ST would be crazy and super interesting

I agree. It would depend mostly on why & how ND lost. The committee has often and clearly stated that they take into account some extenuating circumstances such as an injury to key players. I'm pretty certain they also consider fluky stuff, bad calls, etc. If ND just laid an egg against Syracuse, for example, I think you'd be out. OTOH, if Book got knocked out in the 1st quarter, ND played well but some strange things happened in the game, the committee thought a bad call maybe determined the outcome, etc. I think they'd still believe you to be one of the best 4 teams and put you in.

Optimistic on winning out; pessimistic on getting in with one loss. I believe that almost the entire non-ND nation wants an excuse to leave us out. 11-1 gets us a very nice bowl. 12-0 gets us Clemson.

This is the only thing: Alabama is a fair weather fans dream and a media favorite now, so there are VERY few negative things tossed Bamas way media wise short of Saban having zero social skills (and character might I add SHOULD be the topic of discussion but isnt). There is NO way Bama is remotely in a strong SOS situation.

Come on man, not one tough team there. Not one.

Bama rolls all the points on teams that 1) have no right playing a team getting top 3 recruits for the past 10 years when they arent in the top 25 or even worse and 2) Bama rolling up stats on teams well into the 4th quarter playing starters.

Im not saying Bama is an excellent FOOTBALL program at this time, because they are. But there is not near enough pressure on them to play a tough schedule and they havent for years. The teams they have scheduled that have a pulse the conveniently place a barely D1 team to play the week before. That seems fair! But in their defense, the whole stinkin SEC does the same thing. Guess when you get to play the amount of weak teams that they play year in, year out, you have that option and no one bitches.

I think the when, how, where, by how much, and to whom are all looked at. When looking at when, losing earlier is better than late in the season. How, like you said above, grace might be given if your QB is knocked out in the 1Q. Where, was it on the road in a blizzard 1000 miles away? Did you get beat by 1, or by 15 and was it a fluke or were you trailing the entire game. Was the team a sub 500 chump, a scrappy team with a couple losses, big name brand, or an intrastate or long term rival?

If we are going to lose, I'd rather it be this weekend, on the road, with Book getting a non-serious injury that knocks him out early, in a blizzard, by one point on a crazy bad call that leads to a crazier fluke play where the NW RB is obviously down but somehow refs can't review and overturn....and then the NW coach and refs apologize for getting it wrong and taking what should have been a clear ND victory away.... NW goes on to win their Div... and then we have 3 weeks to move back up the rankings.

either way, i'm happy. the only way i'm not happy is if scUM gets in over an 11-1 ND... i won't be shocked, just disappointed.... and still happy to get a great bowl game.

I look at Sagarin for their SOS, but their ratings are a joke. Example I need to see to prove its a joke, Iowa, Utah, and a 3 loss Washington ranked ahead of Notre Dame. Absolute trash

The ratings don't have the advantage of understanding context. Notre Dame's early season performance includes close-ish wins over Ball Sate and Vanderbilt. If you look at the RECENT column Notre Dame is 3rd. In fact the RECENT category goes Alabama, Clemson, ND, LSU.

The RECENT, is score-based and weights RECENT play more heavily than earlier games. Its effect will become more pronounced the longer a season goes if a given team happens to have an upward or downward trend.

This is the link for the current season, but you can select past years' data from the menu at the top of the page.

That's disingenuous. We were talking about regular season schedules. That link includes CCGames and playoffs/bowls. It's not true that you've had a stronger regular season schedule than us 8/10 years.

The fact is Alabama plays a 9 game schedule with three scrimmages. I went to the Mercer game last year, it was pathetic and boring. The only out of conference game against a Power 5 team is played at a neutral site. Only 4 true away games every year, all of them in the South. Here is a list of Power 5, OOC road games Alabama has played under Saban:

2011 - Penn State

Here is a list of Power 5, OOC road games USC played under Pete Carroll:

2001 - Notre Dame
2002 - Colorado, Kansas St.
2003 - Notre Dame, Auburn
2005 - Notre Dame
2006 - Arkansas
2007 - Notre Dame, Nebraska
2008 - Virginia
2009 - Notre Dame, Ohio State

Keep in mind, USC played 9 conference games, leaving only 3 non-conference games to play. And Saban wonders why the crowds aren't that excited.

I want to know when people are going to start calling out the Alabamas of the world for playing The Citadel. There needs to be a penalty for playing D1AA teams. Frankly, you should have 12 Power5 games or sit down.

I use the RECENT (far right of Sagarin link) to figure out where teams really are. The Vandy and Ball State games had to demolish Notre Dame's Sagarin rating. The RECENT ranking has ND at #3. It weighs recent games more heavily.

The SEC is a LOT better than any other conference this year. This doesn’t mean LSU is good though or deserving of the #3 spot. Alabama is going to absolutely throttle them and their pathetic offense this weekend.

For posterity, Bama demolished LSU 29-0.

Is it possible that we get left put undefeated? What if georgia beats bama by fluke..by 1 in overtime or something dumb
Clemson
1 loss big 12
1 loss big 10
1 loss sec
1 loss bama
1 loss pac 12
12 and 0 irish

7 teams 4 spots....6 teams that all have 11 wins. Are 5hey gonna leave out a 1 loss bama? If they dont are they gonna shit on 4 conference champs.

I know it's very very unlikely...but would we make it?

You say that like conference championships mean anything whatsoever. They've repeatedly shown that being the tallest turd on the pile doesn't mean you or your conference are worth smelling.

but for the first time this year, Tua played in the 4th..

Tua took a hard shot to the cojones and was down and clearly in pain for a minute. The announcers avoided discussing his injury except for one of them finally saying, "OK, if you've ever played football, you know what happened." LOL

At that point...the discussion goes between Alabama and Michigan. They aren't leaving out a 12-0 Notre Dame team for a Georgia team with a loss to LSU, or a Bama team with a loss to Georgia.

If ND wins out, they are at least the 3rd seed.

And just to drive this point home a little further, LSU is the only team that did not manage to score at least a touchdown (ANY points at all in LSU's case) against Alabama this year. This includes POWERHOUSES Arkansas St. And LA-Lafayette.

But yeah, someone tell me how LSU deserved that #3 ranking again...

For posterity, Bama demolished LSU 29-0.
