I fully expect a venue to collapse this time though
Or a riot
Or a dysentery outbreak
This may be the Olympics that literally anything we hear we'll just be like "No shit those morons picked Brazil"

Hell the way this is going I expect the 450,000 condoms to be tissue paper and we'll have 6,000 Olympic babies next year.

one of the world cup stadiums in 2014 had a collapse before the tournament and a bunch of workers were killed so that's already been done lol

dysentery outbreak? sure you could have that in any taco bell in america!

i don't think any Olympic games could have damaged a country more than the Athens Olympics in 2004, the cost of it totally broke the country and see them back decades ecomonically

Athens put on a hell of an Olympics though. Sucks it destroyed them so bad, but I'm gonna say none better in my 34 years. Maybe Lillehammer then Sydney and London.
I'd love to see what Tokyo, New York, LA, Boston, or Dallas could do.
Just on infrastructure and existing venues they'd probably be best suited for it.

Good thing only 350+ lb poors eat there...

If anything goes wrong here my best guess is it leads to the Olympics being held in one of three or four countries moving forward, ours clearly being one of them... The Games should not be this thing that consistently collapses economies, creates civil unrest and such for the host countries...

I can't believe they aren't just moving the water stuff, surfing, swimming, etc. that takes place in the in the ocean... the data on that water and the reactions that have been occurring to anyone swimming in that water is insane. Just move that portion to somewhere safe... screw the money (i know, i know)

It is just a shame for the athletes who work their ass off to compete for medal and represent their country. What the fudge is so hard about having the games in place without shit (literally) in all the water?

This isn't breaking news and not even news just this century. There's been a lot of shenanigans going on since at least the 70's, maybe earlier.

From Syria to the Olympics, refugee tells how she swam for her life (for refugee team)
One evening they boarded a dinghy on the Turkish coast along with 20 others - around three times as many people as it was designed to carry. "Before you go on the boat, people tell you that you are going to die," Sara told IOM in an interview published on Monday. "So the first thing you think about when you get on that boat is death. You don't think of anything else." Hundreds have died crossing the Mediterranean from Turkey as they tried to reach Europe after fleeing conflicts and political turmoil in the Middle East and elsewhere.Sara, also a swimmer, said she told her sister that if their boat capsized during the journey they should just try to save themselves as it would be impossible to help everyone else. But when the engine stopped and the boat started deflating she realized she could not let the others drown. "We needed to have less weight on the boat and nobody else besides us could swim ... When I first got into the water my whole body was shaking like it does just before competition," she said. "At that very moment I felt that life was bigger than me alone. All the people on that boat were part of me. "I thought it was my duty to jump in the water ... if I (had left) them I would feel bad with myself for the rest of my life." She described how her father's friend cut off her trouser legs in the sea to stop her clothing weighing her down. After two hours she was battling exhaustion and knew she risked falling asleep and drowning.

University of Chicago Swimmer Will Make History at Rio Olympics
(for Haiti)
But her main mission, she said, begins after she gets out of the pool in Rio de Janeiro.
"I want to help grow swimming in Haiti," she said. "I want to be that person to help the Haitian swimming federation. I know I'll be going back a lot."
Only 1 percent of the population of Haiti knows how to swim, she said. There are no public 50-meter pools in the country, except a decaying one that is 30 years old. Most private pools are part of resorts or private homes.
Grand'Pierre began swimming because her mother wanted her and her siblings to become capable swimmers. She had three relatives who died as children in drowning accidents. "Those tragedies made a big mark on me," Clio Grand'Pierre said. "I wanted my kids to swim so I would never receive news like that."

Philly rower puts off med school, is off to Olympics (for Nigeria)
Her motivation is multifaceted. She wants to achieve her personal athletic goal but also hopes to inspire young people in the U.S. and Nigeria. She wants to put African rowers in a positive light, while also finding a way to promote the sport and bring it and its benefits to a country still lacking opportunities for youth.
"If I show people that nothing is impossible, if I can spread that message, I've done my job," she said. "A lot of people say, 'How do you do all these things? How are you so determined?' I know being in the U.S. has given me amazing opportunities, and I have to take advantage of them, not only for me, but for other people."

Rio Olympics fencing preview: USA finds its star in Ibtihaj Muhammad
Muhammad will make history at the Rio Games by becoming the first American athlete to wear a hijab — a Muslim head scarf — while competing in the Olympics. Muhammad's Olympic goal — beyond winning a medal, of course — is to be a positive role model for the Muslim-American community. "I've been in this sport for a pretty long time — at this point I feel like I've kind of created a name for myself. If anything, I think the wonderful thing is that now these young kids, they see Muslim women involved in sports. So it's not an anomaly anymore," Muhammad said at the Team USA media summit Los Angeles in March.

Italian-born fencer joins Brazil to fulfill grandma's dream
Italian-born fencer Nathalie Moellhausen grew up hearing her Brazilian grandmother talk about Brazil. She rejoiced every time "Grandma Marcelita" picked up the guitar and played Brazilian songs around the house. It was because of her that Moellhausen learned to love Brazil. And now, to fulfill a dream of her 82-year-old grandmother, Marcela Farotti, Moellhausen will be competing for the hosts at the Rio de Janeiro Games. "Brazil means everything to her, and she wanted me to do this for the country," Moellhausen said. "She said it would be good to do something like this for a place that we love so much. So when the opportunity came, I decided to make the switch." Moellhausen, who has an Italian mother and a German father, has dual citizenship. She joins Brazil's Olympic delegation after representing Italy her entire career, including at the London Games in 2012.

Would like to see more full coverage of all track and field instead of just highlights. Kinda tired of gymnastics and swimming. Don't watch it like I used too. Like Costas and Patrick as studio guys-----golf will draw me in to see how they made and set up the course.

I only really care about:

-Pool events ( nothing else ever moves me much w the summer olympics)
-That no one dies or spreads mass disease from this shit
-Anyone other than Mexico actually cares enough to actually play soccer and beats them...

With the time zone, I expect full coverage of pretty much everything.

Explain, kind sir?

That was awful.

The ceremony? What? It's on delay here so it hasn't even started...

It starts in 40, I assume it's two hours of indigenous dance/theater, two hours of walking into the stadium and a torch lighting... Anything else worth actually watching?

The show part is a bunch of preachy environmentalism bullshit.

EDIT: So is the parade of nations. There are seeds and plants and trees and all sorts of Wall-E shit.

This looks like a creepy dystopian 1970s commune run from a post-nuclear junkyard. https://t.co/AWP5fJEmfN
