So they are 3 over the 85 limit. Hounshell is a goner. If no transfers or medicals, who are the last 2 to get axed? I'm going w Martin and Grace.

-QB Everett Golson
-LB Jarrett Grace
-LB Joe Schmidt
-OL Nick Martin
-CB Matthias Farley
-TE Chase Hounshell
-WR Amir Carlisle

There is no way in hell we are cutting a multi-year starter and team captain, especially on the OL.

Gonna suck for Grace, especially since he was heavily featured in the most recent "Onward."

There has to be a transfer/medical in there somewhere...

When do they have to be at the 85 number?

It sure looks like the staff is counting on six of those guys being part of this year's team. If there's no room for Farley after taking Sebastian on, I will be all kinds of salty.

Dude, you realize you are talking about the starting center right? Can you imagine wasting your entire spring starting a player at a position as vital as center? That would be epically stupid, and trust me, it won't happen.

No inside info, but I'd be absolutely stunned if Grace wasn't invited back. Kelly has been really pleased with him, and reporters say he's moving fantastically. Plus he's a real leader out there.

There are guys that aren't playing right now that I'm sure will want to go somewhere and play. With Hounshell, you just need to lose 2 players. Injuries, transfers, arrests...I'm not worried. This is Notre Dame, remember. Just wait for that show to drop...

Not to mention that showing some loyalty to your players can pay off down the road.

Grace was the guy most prominently featured in Onward Notre Dame as well. Sounds stupid, but I really don't think they'd do that if the coaching staff wasn't planning on him being back. I am very certain there is a fair amount of communication with the staff and the production people.

I thought Grace 100% would't be back a couple months ago, but it seems like he is pretty much back to full strength, and he was our leading tackler in 2013 until his injury....I thought Schmidt was a lock to return but I'm not positive now. Going to be interesting getting the roster down to 85.

Barring transfers, I'd guess it's Houshell, Farley, Schmidt who are all gone.

I am not sure who is gone. But I don't think there is any way Farley is gone. They would part with a linebacker or offensive player before him reading from what all the "insiders" watching practice have to say.

Even though it sounds like Baratti is back practicing he still hasn't taken contact so who knows how that goes. Also, from the sounds of it MH might be on the outs. He doesn't have a position right now and from what I read he hasn't been involved almost at all this spring. There's the 3 right there which I think is more likely than Farley or the others mentioned.

I don't think Farley and Schmidt are going anywhere, given the lack of quality depth at those 2 positions.
And I realize depth at LB is better than S, but all they've ever done is praise Joe Schmidt. Just can't see them giving him the boot.

There's zero chance that Kelly lets Farley or Schmidt walk. They were two of our most important defensive starters last year. Medicals for Heuerman and Baratti, or a transfer from someone buried on the depth chart are all far more likely.

Exactly. We scraped the bottom of the barrel at ILB last season, and it was Schmidt's injury that tanked our defense in 2014.

Is Schmidt fully recovered yet? I suppose it's possible that he doesn't recover completely and is given a hardship (though I'm not sure that applies for potential 5th years), but otherwise, he's back.

Who does MH stand for?

Yeah, I don't see Martin going anywhere. BK already said that he's starting. Plus, well... he's a Martin.

I think it will be very hard for Hounshell to keep a spot. I admire his love for the game and the school, evidenced by him playing it out and seeing what happens. You never know what kind of attrition could happen. Here are some possibilities.

- BK has knowledge of player(s) with desire to leave if they don't make the two deep.
- BK has knowledge of medical situation (Grace? Baratti?)
- Heuerman is done.
- BK is simply willing to make the hard call and not extend 5th year offers to three guys.

In my opinion, those guys would probably be Hounshell, Grace and Schmidt (the last one hurts) if it came down to simply the 5th year guys. I think most likely, probably Heuerman is done, Hounshell and Baratti. This is what working the 85 limit looks like, fellas. 5th year offers are not guaranteed to anyone. Those three are the only guys in the list of possible redshirts that could feasibly not be in the two deep at their position.

I said barring transfers those were the 3 guys I'd pick to cut. We're 3 over right now. I'm hoping MH and Baratti are gone as well and we can keep Farley/Schmidt. If we don't get any transfers or hardships....I really don't know what we're going to do. Those two seem like by far the most replaceable of the 5th years.

What about Deeb? He has to be a transfer possibility.

Yeah, I'm guessing Hounshell and Baratti are he best bets to not be back/medical RS. Toss up on the 3rd.

Ok, as I said, without knowledge of medicals or transfers, if this is the list you are working with you are you not accepting 5th year applications from? Baratti isn't on the list as. Huermann isn't on the list. Grace absolutely would be a candidate. I agree Martin has a lot of value but the choices here aren't good if this is the list they have to choose from.
